The Surat Thani Province region
When you travel around the island you will find a wealth of natural beauty and cosmopolitan luxury.
Koh Samui is small enough to drive a car around in about two hours and big enough to discover new things and beautiful places even if you stay for several weeks. While the most visited areas have roads lined with shops and businesses, much of the island remains covered with coconut groves, rice paddies and tropical forest. A sense of adventure and a bit of effort will be amply rewarded with everything from sophisticated shops and restaurants to serene hikes, jungle drives and spectacular views.
Sights and Scenes
In such an idyllic setting, the temptation is simply to laze peacefully on your lounger and soak up the tropical sun, but if you are more adventurous you will not have far to look. Water sports such as water skiing, deep sea fishing, diving and snorkelling the coastal waters exploring the coral reefs and their marine life.
Other attractions include Samui's natural sights, such as the picturesque waterfalls of Na Muang and Hin Lat, both make for an interesting excursion in to the islands interior.
Koh Samui has an abundance of restaurants and many within a few minutes drive of the villa and at least two within walking distance.
Most beach resorts have their own restaurants and there is a vast and varied choice of places to eat. Local beach restaurants serving fresh fish and green curry dishes in a relaxed atmosphere to internationally acclaimed chefs serving mouth watering Mediterranean cuisine in luxurious surroundings.
Many kinds of retail goods from all over Thailand are available. Thai silks and handicrafts are just two examples. Visit Chaweng, Nathon and Lamai for the best retail therapy.
Samui's nightlife is centred on Chaweng Beach Road. Here you will find many nightclubs, bars and restaurants.
The Santiburi Samui Country Club 18 hole Championship Golf Course located in the hillside on Samui's northern coast. It commands magnificent views of Maenam Beach and the island of Koh Phangan beyond.
Spas and Retreats
Koh Samui boasts of world class spas and retreats, offering luxurious and rejuvenating body and facial treatments, aromatic steam baths, spa treatments and so much more.
The beach in front of the villa is a peaceful 'non tourist' beach with a fishing boat marina and a beachside boutique hotel (Deva Beach Resort) at the southern end. The water here is shallow and not suitable for swimming. The nearest swimming beach is at Choeng Mon, a 5 minute drive with beachside bars, restaurants and watersports.
There are at least four bars/restaurants within walking distance of the villa, the nearest being a 2 minute walk. There are many more within a 10 minute drive, some of which are exceptional and most are excellent value
The nearest convenience store is a 10 minute walk where you can buy basic foodstuff and toiletries. The local market is a 15 minute walk, here you can buy fresh seafood, fruit and vegetables at local prices. The islands main shopping mall with a large Tesco Lotus Supermarket together with numerous shops and fast food outlets is a 15 minute drive.
Plai Laem has the largest Buddhist temple on the island and the famous 12m high Big Buddha statue is a 15 minute walk, close to the local market.
Chaweng, is the main tourist resort on the island, it has the largest and most popular beach running parallel to the main street which is crammed with shops, bars and restaurants. This is the main centre for evening entertainment.
Bophut 'Fishermans Village' is a 10 minute drive, and altogether different and more sophisticated than Chaweng, it has the islands only walking street with some nice bars, restaurants and shops lining the waters edge.
We always recommend car hire to our guests for convenience but for this villa it's optional owing to the proximity of the local services and taxis if required are readily available
Plai Laem is located on the northeast of Koh Samui, nestled between Big Buddha Beach and Cheong Mon. Palm fringed beaches and stunning sunsets are in abundance with limited tourist or even local activity along its coastline, providing a taste of quite island life.
The solitude is evident when strolling along the beach and Plai Laem is the closest you will get to having your own private beach. The area usually attracts the more discerning traveller, offering luxury beach front villas located in a peaceful setting yet close enough to the buzzing tourist spots of Koh Samui.
Located at the southern end of the beach is a small marina where local fishermen moor their boats, and a couple of tour companies have their deep sea fishing and pleasure crafts. The sea at Plai laem is shallow and not suitable for swimming and water sports opportunities are limited but it is only a short drive to Choeng Mon, one of the best swimming beaches on Koh Samui.
Plai Laem is famous for its temple, adorned with amazing Buddhist idols; the most visited being the 18-armed Buddha statue. Surrounded by a lake teeming with large fish, the temple is the epitome of the serenity and solitude associated with Buddhism and offers an interesting alternative to Koh Samui's usual beach activity. The small island of Koh Som is located just off the coast and with no major commercial development, you can enjoy a quiet picnic on its shore, overlooking the pristine waters separating the two islands.
Plai Laem maybe quieter spot, but it is not isolated from the rest of Koh Samui, with Big Buddha beach and the golden Big Buddha statue within walking distance and the busy Chaweng just a short taxi ride away. It is also ideal as a honeymoon destination, with all the privacy and solitude you would expect with a few restaurants, spas and hotels to keep you occupied during your stay.
