The Southern Italy / Calabria region
Pizzo and its aea is famous for its scenic rugged coast, long sandy beaches, pleasant climate and the best ice-cream in the world. The region is steeped in history, with its roots dating back to 7th century BC when it originally became inhabited as the Greek colony of Hipponion. The climate is typically Mediterranean, meaning bright, sunny days in the Summer and mild Winters.
Pizzo is rich in cultural tradition, and is one of the most characteristic places along the Tyrrhenian Calabrian coast, in the centre of the Golfo di Santa Eufemia. It is a town of about 9,000 inhabitants. The alleys of the historical centre interlace around the houses, which are built upon a rough cliff, clinging to the jutting. From the squares of the town there are and amazing views, while from its streets blue sea leading the eye towards the imposing site of the Stromboli volcano.
Pizzo area
Pizzo is one of the most renowned towns in the Vibo Valentia province on the western coast of Calabria. The town is a well-known and popular seaside resort as well as a thriving fishing centre. Pizzo , situated on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea and within a short 15 minute drive of Lamezia International airport offering direct and inexpensive flights to the UK.
'Pizzo' in local dialect means 'cliff' and the resort itself sits high over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Our holidays in Pizzo will leave you with a similar high. In fact with all that sun and the relaxed pace of life you'll never want to leave.
The beach here is overlooked by a 1940's castle and is the perfect place to top up your tan. While inland the main piazza is the place to be for shopping and delicious food. Corso Garibaldi is the main shopping street, where you'll find gorgeous boutiques selling quality shoes and clothes. And when you do stop for lunch, be sure to sample Pizzo's speciality dessert Tartufo gelato. You won't be disappointed.
For a rather more humbling experience visit the Church of Piedigrotta, burrowed into a natural cave. It's the work of sailors who wanted to thank the Madonna for sparing their lives in a shipwreck. The unusual monuments chipped into the stone are truly inspiring when you consider the basic tools the men used.
How to get there
Fly from the UK with Ryanair, KLM, AirFrance or Alitalia to Lamezia Terme International Airport.
Rent a Car from the airport and drive to Pizzo (15km) along the maid highway A3 Salerno - Reggio Calabria, Pizzo is the first exit after Lamezia.
