Southern Italy region

Calabria is located in the south west of Italy (the toe of the Italian boot) It deserves, with its unbelievably rich history and culture, to be more known than it is today. The nature, people, history and the traditions are what make Calabria what it is.

Holidays in the region of Calabria offer a variety of different landscapes, from the stunning coastal areas, with craggy cliffs set against the brilliant blue seas, to the rugged mountainous inland, dotted with traditional villages, and even a small ski area.

Climate

Pizzo has a classic southern Mediterranean climate, enjoying warm weather from April to October. The summers are hot and dry with clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine. Temperatures in July and August are +30°C with 12 hours of sun a day. Spring and autumn are both good times to visit. The days are warm and sunny, the beaches are deserted and temperatures average 20-25°C.

Pizzo

The old, picturesque village of Pizzo is a short 15 minute drive away with a variety of shops, restaurants and bars as well as some breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding countryside. Tropea is only a 30 minute drive away. The property is located a short 5 minute walk from a large sandy beach. The short walk is via a pathway through beautiful pine and eucalyptus trees.

Pizzo has two main tourist attractions: the Chiesetta di Piedigrotta, a bizarre cave-chapel on the shore, and the renowned tartufo di Pizzo, a chocolate truffle ice cream. It also has a historic castle and a pleasant town centre where there is a tourist information office in Piazza della Repubblica, the main square.

The Chiesetta di Piedigrotta is just outside Pizzo; a fifteen-minute walk along the road leading out of town along the coast to the north-east. The church is down a flight of steps; tickets are for sale at a bar over the road. The church dates back to the seventeenth century and is a cave dug out of a soft rock in a bank facing right out to sea, and was originally created in gratitude by shipwrecked sailors who'd been saved from a storm. The interior is ornamented with statues carved enthusiastically from the rock by a local family in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is hard to decide whether the chapel is a devoutly kitsch curiosity or a tourist trap. Still, it is definitely worth seeing if you are in Pizzo. According to local tourist publicity, it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Calabria, rivalling the Riace Bronzes in Reggio di Calabria's archaeological museum.

The tartufo di Pizzo is a chocolate and hazelnut ice cream (gelato) shaped as a rough sphere, containing chocolate fudge sauce and coated in cocoa powder and sugar. Its popularity - or marketing power - spreads beyond Pizzo and you'll find it on the dessert menu in other parts of southern Italy. Word has it, locally, that a big ice cream multinational is seeking to popularise the product even further. The cafes around the main square in Pizzo all serve this speciality, and variations on it, with waiters producing a non-stop procession of ice creams.

The centre of Pizzo is a picturesque network of narrow lanes, historic but bustling with everyday Calabrian life. We visited during a strawberry festival and found the town lively with stalls, food tasting, live music and a jolly atmosphere. The heart of town is Piazza della Repubblica, where travellers can relax at an outdoor table and enjoy a gelato. Close to the square is Pizzo's castle, known as the Castello Murat. It was built in the fifteenth century but is most celebrated for being the place where Napoleon's brother-in-law, Joachim Murat, was executed. The castle is open to the public, and also hosts special events.

Downhill in the shadow of the castle is Pizzo's small harbour, with a pleasant seaside promenade. The railway station is along the coast in this direction. There is a stretch of beach here, and more beaches on the other side of town, a short drive away.

In the summer tourist season a little tourist 'train' called the Pizzo Express takes visitors on a tour of Pizzo and to the Chiesa di Piedigrotta.

Around Pizzo

Pizzo is conveniently placed on the coastal road and railway for visiting Tropea and the rest of the Costa degli Dei. If you have hired a car, you can tour the whole Tropea promontory visiting little coastal resorts and villages such as Briatico, Parghelia, Tropea, Capo Vaticano and Nicotera. The provincial capital, Vibo Valentia, is a short distance inland from Pizzo and is worth a visit for its mighty castle which has superb views. There are a number of interesting inland destinations for travellers with their own transport, such as Filadelfia. Further north up the Calabrian coast is the historic town of Amantea. Scilla, a very attractive fishing village and beach resort is around two hours away by train, and Reggio di Calabria is half an hour further - a long journey but worth it if you are interested in seeing the famous Greek statues, the Riace Bronzes, in the museum.

From this stretch of coast there are summer boat trips to the Aeolian Islands, with departures from Pizzo as well as nearby Vibo Marina. These day trips are a good way to visit several of the beautiful islands including Stromboli, which is an active volcano.

"First Class Apartment and Holiday Complex"

I stayed at Villa Italia with my husband and our children aged 20 and 22 - this was probably the last holiday that our children would be joining us on and I wanted it to be special. I am pleased to say that it was BRILLIANT, the apartment was immaculate, comfortable and had all the essentials needed for our holiday. We especially liked the balcony and roof terrace, great for a relaxing breakfast and glass of wine in the evening. The Pizzo Beach Complex is beautiful, the grounds are landscaped with lots of greenery and flowers and it is very safe with a card pass provided for access into the complex. There are two lovely pools, which even in August were never crowded with sunbeds always available and the added convenience of toilets and showers in these areas. We ate at the restaurant on site on two occasions and picked up a couple of essentials from the small shop which was handy. We enjoyed the woodland walk to the beach and found this to be a beautiful area, crystal clear water and sunbeds with umbrellas provided. Clare (the apartment owner) provided us with all the necessary information needed before our stay and was very friendly to deal with. We also found Paul and Lorraine the agents for the accommodation very helpful with a comprehensive 'meet and greet' service and the security of a contact card for their services if needed during our stay. Pizzo town is very rustic and we feel that we have had a taste of the 'real Italy'. Would definately recommend this apartment, an excellent holiday enjoyed by us all.

"We love Pizzo"

Just wanted to give all some info on our first time holiday to Italy in June that will hopefully help others with theirs

We found this lovely appt in Pizzo on Holiday lettings.co.uk.
The nearest airport is Lamezia . This required a 2 flight hop from us in Ireland

We eventually found Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Catania (Sicily) great price although we had booked 6 months in advance.
We decided to go this way so that we only had one flight but also wanted to see some of Italian countryside.

Hired a car for the 2 of us for €130 for 7 days - via Ulste Bank travel dept –picked up at airport....excess/CDW insurance bought through company in Ireland( €30 for week)..do not buy from car hire company – very expensive (over €110 for the week)

The only drawback with this route was cost of ferry from Sicily to mainland - €63 return for car and 2 passengers – Still the ferry crossing and drive up to Pizzo , around 220km ,was lovely

The appt was in Pizzo beach Club –approx 10 mins o/s Pizzo village/town . First impression were, very secure, lovely gardens and quiet.

The apartment itself was first class, situated in a lovely location with no other apartments in front and a view of one of the swimming pools from the roof terrace. We soaked up the sun most days on sun loungers on the terrace and retired to the balcony below for a drink in the evening. Although we didn't use it too often SKY TV with movies in English was a nice addition. The apartment is tastefully furnished and would comfortably sleep five. There is all mod cons required, including a washing machine, and the air conditioning was a must during the glorious weather we had.

The resort has 2 pools which are really delightful and lifeguard on duty all the time.
Beach is a nice leisurely walk through the forest...although we are more of beside the pool type

Resort has small shop for essentials and a club house which is lovely..quite when we were there but again offers good food .

Unless you plan to stay in resort all the time you will need a car...nearest supermarket is 10 mins away in Callipo (follow signs for Acconia) – friendly staff

We ventured out to Vibo Marina (past Pizzo) a couple of times –found lovely pizzeria down by port –very cheap – food and beer – cant remember name but its on Via Michele Bianci (found street on google earth)

We also went to market in Vibo Valentia- lovely place..great atmosphere..

We went to Tropea twice- fabulous typical Italian town...great buzz..watch out where you park and drive..suggest you park up as soon as you can and walk...I think we paid €3 for a couple of hours.
Because of the amount of tourists the prices seems a bit more for food and drink than other places

Anyway overall...we had a fantastic holiday in Pizzo beach Club and the surrounding area in this part of Italy. I would have no hesitation in recommending Pizzo Beach Club and the apartment we stayed in, Villa Italia. The owners made the booking process very straightforward and kept in touch during the booking and indeed when we returned to check everything went well. They are ably assisted by their apartment managers in Pizzo who are there to welcome you and provide assistance with local information etc.

The weather was fantastic. The people were very friendly

We will definitely go back

Thanks

"Perfect for recharging batteries"

With one baby and a four year old this holiday was as relaxing as it could possbly be. The apartment is really nice and modern. The roof top solarium is a lovely place both to start and end the day. At the resort, this apartment is one of the apartments with the best view.

Our oldest son throughly enjoyed bothg the playground and the one swimming pool which was open during our stay. The fitness areas (gym, tennis court, fotball pitch) were nice places to spend some time when you are tired of the sun. There is also a small track parallell to the beach which is great for running.

Pizzo and the nearby surroundings really gives you a genuine Italian feeling. Pizzo is a charming little town well known for its icecreams. Because of Italian siestas, finding places to eat which fits the rythm of small babies might be difficult, but a great nearby restaurant called Neocastrum is open from 9-18.

The owners have been really helpful and service minded both before and during our stay. Likewise when it comes to their local representatives.

We highly recommend this wonderful place!
