The Tuscany region

The medieval Grosseto is one of the major tourist attractions in Tuscany. The city lies on the Tuscan coast of the area known as the Maremma, a large and diverse area covering parts of southwestern Tuscany and some of northern Latium.

The whole historical centre is fenced with pentagonal Medicean walls still in great conditions. Walking along the walls' perimeter you can see two cardinal gates: Porta Nuova going northwards and the so-called Porta Vecchia, facing south.

In the heart of Grosseto, the Dome of St Lorenzo (Duomo di San Lorenzo) is a grand piece of art, built in honour of the local patron saint. The Duomo was founded over the ruins of the Church of St Maria, in 1138 under authorization from the bishop Rolando. It was conceived by the architect Sozzo di Rustichino and renovated several times throughout the ages.

The façade shows bi-coloured stripes, while the right side portal has lovely decorative motives. Outside stands the terracotta bell-tower, erected in 1402. It is a Latin cross church, with a central nave and two side aisles divided by pillars. The christening font was realized in the XV century by Antonio Ghini, who also made the altar of Madonna delle Grazie placed into the left transept. The central nave preserves a beautiful stoup (1506) made by a Senese sculptor. Two marvellous stained glass windows portraying a number of saints will catch you eye to the right aisle. A chapel inside the dome keeps a ligneous crucifix dating back to the XV-XVI century.

Apart from being a great artistic attraction, Grosseto is also a good bathing resort. Clean sea, sandy beaches and good waves make Marina di Grosseto a funny stopping point in summer. Here you will find large verdant pine-woods, brooms and a heady smell of rosemary all around.

Located in the heart of Italy, Tuscany is surely one of the most famous Italian landscapes. The essence of this beautiful region are its natural, artistic, and cultural heritage.

Bounded by the Ligurian and the Tyrrhenian Sea (two arms of Mediterranean), this region is divided into ten provinces, whose capitals are Arezzo, Florence, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena. Florence is the capital city of the region itself.

The region was populated first by the Etruscans on the 7th century BC, and about 500 years later by the Romans.

The words Humanism and Renaissance evoke Tuscany, as immediately as Pope evokes Rome: just think that between the fourteenth and the sixteenth century, both these ages were born here. The entire region attained a very important artistic role.

If you are keen on art and nature… well you’re definitely in the right place! ;-)

Indeed the fathers of Italian painting, architecture and sculpture lived in this beautiful towns: such as Cimabue, Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo. This is the reason why the entire region is rich in museums where thousands of amazing works are kept. You’ll be impressed by the majesty of the many ancient palaces (for examples “Palazzo Vecchio”, “Palazzo Pitti”, “Palazzo Medici”), monasteries and villas that are springing up all over the Tuscany.

Spring and fall are the best times to visit Tuscany, because the climate is mild. Bus-lines and trains connect the larger towns, but having a car would be a great advantage, and you would be easily able to enjoy the small towns and vineyards, which represent some of Tuscany’s strong points.

The “Chiantigiana road” is a must to see: it produces some of Italy’s finest wines. This is the colourful and legendary road of the “Chianti" region. The grape cultivation dates back to the Etruscan times. One of the biggest pleasures will be sipping different wines, at the wineries or at the wine bars scattered in the towns.

What about a drop in on “Mugello”? It is a countryside surrounded by oaks, chestnut trees and by the Apennines, This land of artists and painters have been source of inspiration in its farmhouses and colours. with kind people, authentic cooking, good wine, plus a great tradition in handicrafts.

The Apuan Alps are a monumental work of the nature. They consist in some of the highest peaks in the region: This regional park sets up the chance for those who want to practice trekking, cycling, horse riding or simply walking to enjoy this beautiful landscape.

Versilia is an area of 20 km sandy beaches located in the north of the region. The seaside with the colourful bathing areas is rich in bars and meeting places. Camaiore, Forte dei Marmi, Massarosa, Pietrasanta, Seravezza, Stazzema and Viareggio are the towns of this beautiful coast.

Another great attraction of this region is the archipelago. The largest island is Elba: more than one hundred kilometers of coast.

Curiously enough, since the Etruscans introduced the use of fresh herbs, the Tuscan cooking is still based on vegetable dishes, bread-based soups, meats perfumed with sage, rosemary, and thyme. Moreover the secret of its success is the good care and the devotion to guarantee the quality of the products of the land... crostini of chicken liver, soups, tortelli with Bolognese sauce, “pappardelle” with hare sauce or with boar sauce, boar hunter style, fillet of beef, salted cod with tomato sauce, ricciarelli, cantucci, Tuscan salt-less bread… We’re sure your mouth is already watering!

A holiday in Tuscany is an experience that will bring you back happy memories for the rest of your life.

Pitigliano

Pitigliano is a truly characteristic village lying to the south of Florence and north of Rome, in a zone known as land of "Bianco di Pitigliano": a great Italian wine. Pitigliano is located at the extreme south of Tuscany, in the province of Grosseto.

The village is also called "the small Jerusalem": appellation due to both the medieval landscape – recalling the ancient Jerusalem – and the large group of Jewish that inhabited Pitigliano in ancient times and founded the Jewish University of Pitigliano.

This fascinating town rises, fortified, on top of a cliff and heightens all its romantic and discrete charm in the chiaroscuro of the narrow, almost secret, alleys and the dark cellars. Exploring the subsoil you will discover an authentic second city, crossed by intercommunicating tunnels, wells positioned on different levels, ancient graves and colombarium.

Every house is provided with a cellar, which goes down and down until the room of wooden barrels, where the wine is preserved at a constantly cool temperature. Then the tunnels continue going down to a second and a third ravine, to the bowels of the cliff.

A few steps away from the built-up area are the numerous "cave": streets excavated deep into the tuff in very ancient times, made in order to link the old villages with each other.

A bit of history...

Pitigliano can boast ancient origins, witnessed by the numerous Etruscan tombs found in town throughout the ages.

Since the VIII century BC, Pitigliano's political life has been closely connected to the nearby village of Sovana, governed by the Aldobrandeschi family. Pitigliano gradually increased its military importance thanks to both the strategic position and the wedding between Anastasia, the last Aldobrandeschi's descendant in Maremma, and Romano Orsini, relative of Giovanni Gaetano Orsini: Pope Niccolò III.

Pitigliano was reconfirmed as chief town of the county and the Orsini's made it their main residence. In 1547, Niccolò IV (thanks to the support of Cosimo de' Medici) was proclaimed Lord of the town, even though, after a while he was imprisoned from the Pontifical Inquisition. The locals, after the fall of Siena (1562), favoured the Florentine liberal laws by throwing out the count Orsini and hailing the Medicean as Lords.

Unfortunately, the Medicean domination did not worked out as hoped, on the contrary, the county became every day poorer, until the coming of Lorena's at the helm of the Grand Ducky of Tuscany that, thanks to a wise economic politic, brought wellness and stability.

With the plebiscite of 1860, Pitigliano became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

Pitigliano now...

It gives a spectacular, unforgettable impression! You will breathe the history of different civilizations and cultures followed one another into the unpredictable stream of times: prehistoric, Etruscan, Roman, the medieval Aldobrandeschi's history; the Renaissance greatness of the Roman Orsini's family; the Medici and Lorena... The must see certainly is the palace-fortress of Orsini.
