THINGS TO DO OUTSIDE OF PISSOURI
WEST OF PISSOURI Petra Tou Romiou A short drive will take you to one of the most photographed scenes in Cyprus, Petra Tou Romiou more commonly known as Aphrodite’s Birth Place. The dramatic rocks look like monumental tear drops in the ocean and are backdrop to the mythological setting where Aphrodite emerged from the waves! You may prefer just to take in the view or if you feel a little more adventurous perhaps climb the largest of the tear drop rocks or swim around it 3 times to be blessed with Aphrodite’s famed eternal beauty! (Legend may claim this to be true but I think it was her last laugh!!)
Aphrodite Hills and Secret Valley Close to Petra Tou Romiou you will find a choice of 2 leisure resorts; Aphrodite Hills and Secret Valley. Combined these resorts offer superb play on 2 x 18 hole golf courses, driving ranges and a 3 hole pitch and put course. If Golf is not your idea of fun you can relax in the spa, polish your tennis skills with professional lessons and play in the regular tennis social classes or simply unwind and enjoy a leisurely lunch in one of the elegant restaurants set against luscious green surroundings!
Paphos Paphos is situated approximately 30km from Pissouri. Kato Paphos and the main tourist area is land marked by the pretty harbour and dramatic Fort perched on the waters edge. The promenade is the perfect place for a stroll in the warm sunshine and you will find many taverns offering fresh fish and local cuisine to while away an afternoon whilst watching the little fishing boats bob up and down in the water.
Paphos is rich in ancient sites, including the House of Dionysos and the Villa of Theseus, with beautiful mosaic floors, and the Tombs of the Kings. There is a wide variety of activities and facilities to suit all ages whether you are holidaying or living here permanently.
Enjoy an active life in the sun on a choice of beaches where you can try all water sports in the warm Mediterranean Sea from diving to the flying fish!
Latchi Fans of fresh seafood should make for the picturesque fishing village of Latchi, which has some of the best fish restaurants situated along the pretty harbour.
Latchi has plenty to appeal to the tourist. Water sports such as parasailing are available here. Boats can be hired from Latchi harbour from where you can take your boat to the Blue Lagoon and swim in the emerald green sea.
Aphrodite's Bath is close by; the picturesque rock pool and waterfall where the goddess is believed to have bathed, oozes with magic and mystery. Legend has it that the water from the baths is rejuvenating and will bless you with eternal youth! We will let you be the judge! The nearby Akamas Peninsular is an untouched wilderness laced with hiking trails and secluded coves bitten from the pink rock. Offshore, the waters are a glassy mosaic of greens and blues that promise some of the best snorkeling and diving on the island.
NORTH OF PISSOURI Troodos and Mountain Villages Cyprus is one of the few places where you are able to walk on sun-kissed beaches in the morning and ski on snow-capped mountains in the afternoon. In the summer months, Troodos is a cool, welcomed retreat from the coastal heat and there are many activities to pursue from woodland pony rides to cycling and walks on dappled pathways leading to hidden waterfalls.
Winter time offers a magical wonderland where you can sip delicious hot chocolate made on location in Platres, have skiing or snowboarding lessons, hire sledges for some real family fun or simply build a snowmen! Wintertime in Troodos is a main attraction for tourists and locals alike and the village square is bustling with people purchasing hot honey nuts and sampling Commandaria wine.
What is there in this life to stop you following the locals to their winter and summer playground and losing yourself in this ageless, rugged landscape?
EAST OF PISSOURI Kourion Amphitheatre The ancient Hellenistic Kourion Theatre which sits on the top of a hill overlooks the glistening Mediterranean Sea, was constructed probably around the late 2nd century A.D. The magnificent presence of this ancient relic resonates of times gone by and over the years it’s stage featured raging gladiators as well as plays and operas.
The view from Kourion Ampitheatre is nothing short of spectacular and at its feet you will find the ever popular Kourion Beach. (sometimes spelled Curium). Kourion is a sandy blue flag beach with a gentle shoreline. It can however be a little windier here and as there are no wave breaks it is a great place for wind surfing, kite boarding and even hand gliding.
There are 3 restaurants on the beach and I have to be extremely bias on this occasion and show my loyalty to Chris’s Blue Bar and Restaurant, which is the middle one. This Beach restaurant has recently been refurbished and offers sun loungers, fantastic shower and changing facilities. The restaurant has a varied menu but genuinely it would be a shame to miss the delicious fresh fish on offer. Choose your own fish from the chilled displays or order a great bottle of wine and let wave upon wave of Fish Meze come to you. Believe me when I say that you will not need to eat again that day!
Kourion is a great day out and you will find more locals than tourists on the beach. As Kourion is close to Fasouri Water Park, it can also be a civilised way to end a day of water mayhem!
Pissouri / Pissouri Village area
THINGS TO DO IN PISSOURI Perched on the hillside, the views from Pissouri village and its surroundings are spectacular. To the East it is possible to see across the countryside to the shoreline stretching all the way to Limassol and even beyond. The north of Pissouri is witness to the Troodos mountain range, including the snow-capped peaks of Mount Olympus which at more than 6000 ft is the highest mountain on the island!
Pissouri has a quaint, unique character bestowed by winding cobbled streets lined with charming rustic houses. The Cypriot character has certainly been retained and is what attracts so many visitors.
There is an exceptional choice of restaurants and taverns offering a wide range of cuisine; Pissouri really does have it all; from ice creams palours to exquisite fine dining there are restaurants for all occasions! Pissouri is FULL of life and you are absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out! Try one of Pissouri’s famous courtyard restaurants where your setting is in an intimate private garden or dance the night away in own of the towns animated pubs. There is definitely something for everyone in this lively little town!!
During the summer there is a traditional 'Cyprus night' in the lovely pedestrianised village square, with dancing and music. It is hosted by the 3 restaurants and their collaboration creates an incredible party atmosphere that is so infectious you can’t help but be drawn into the merriment! There is much Greek Dancing and entertaining whilst you dine underneath the stars and later a DJ with a live band take the evening into the early hours! Although the idea is perhaps to provide entertainment for Pissouri’s visitors, it is also true that a significant number of those present every week are the villagers themselves! Here you can truly enjoy an authentic Cyprus evening but as you can imagine the evenings are so popular that early booking is essential!!
The Amphitheatre is a recent addition to the village and it is fair to say that this magnificent structure is well worth a visit at anytime. The amphitheatre stands in a dominant, choice position, in walking distance of the village square.
Take your camera! The views across the valley towards Pissouri Bay and Akrotiri Peninsula are spectacular! During the warmer part of the year there will be a programme of events in the theatre including; Operas, Music & Dance Festivals, Plays and Exhibitions (remember to take a cushion!). This magical open air theatre takes us back thousands of years and shows us how performances were viewed - it can’t fail to impresses any culture loving person! The acoustics within the theatre are remarkable and it is definitely an experience to be part of the audience at this extraordinary venue!
The most popular way to spend an holiday is on the BEACH. The blue flag beach of Pissouri is a short drive away and you will find Jet skis, wind-surfing, paragliding, skiing and snorkelling are just the tip of the iceberg of facilities available. The beach is lined with beach front restaurants and taverns. Whether you want to indulge yourself with a frozen yoghurt or ice-cream, a quick bite, delicious salads or some of the best seafood restaurants in Cyprus - you will find it all here!
OUR TOP 10 THINGS TO DO WHILST STAYING AT PINE VIEW VILLA 1. Book a table in the village square and experience Pissouri’s legendary “Cyprus Evenings” 2. Visit Fasouri Water Park. This explosion of aqua madness is only a 25 minute drive from Pine view and in our opinion is THE best on the island!! 3. Head to Kourion Beach and visit the ancient amphitheatre. We highly recommend sharing a Fish Meze or Fish Platter at Chris’s Blue Beach Bar! 4. Visit Adonis Falls just off the main road between Paphos and Coral Bay. Sink into the ice cold water and feel the heat of the day wash away! 5. Book an evening at Pissouri’s landmark amphitheatre. 6. Take the coastal road from Pissouri to Paphos and stop off at ‘Petra Tou Romiou’ aka Aphrodite’s Rock - the most photographed point on the island! 7. For a little shopping therapy, head to Tiffany’s Shopping Mall in Limassol 8. Spend the day at Latchi on the Akamas Peninsula. Here you can visit Aphrodite’s Baths and perhaps hire a boat from the water sport centre and sail to the famous Blue Lagoon! 9. No matter what time of year you visit Cyprus, head into the Troodos mountains! 10. Or why not spend the day lazing round the pool! Lose yourself in a good book and perhaps light the barbie just as the sun begins to set!
Cycling There are many bike trails that can be enjoyed in Cyprus. Why not rent a bicycle during your stay in Pissouri? There are lots of cycle trails and unlimited quiet country roads and villages for you to explore! Pineview offers a mountain biker’s paradise right on its doorstep!
Watersports The Columbia Water Sports Centre at Pissouri Bay is the top centre in Cyprus for renting boards and sails. The Centre offers wakeboarding, kitesurfing, water skiing, Hobie Cats and all other water sports. Columbia Watersports is based at the Columbia Resort and Beach Hotel in a sheltered bay with cross on-shore winds. The water offers an ideal playground for beginners and experts! It is also possible to sail with turtles! There are rare Green turtles nesting nearby in the summer and you frequently see them in the bay. Scuba Diving You cannot escape the fact that Cyprus is surrounded by the clear, calm beautiful, Mediterranean Sea. This makes the island perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling. The Paphos coast boasts dozens of great diving and snorkelling sites and just a short drive towards Larnaca is the world, top ten dive site, the Zenobia wreck. So whether you are a beginner or you have been a successful diver for years – diving in Cyprus is an exciting and unforgettable time!
RESTAURANTS IN PISSOURI Moonlight Tavern As its name implies, it has an excellent view of the rising moon at the right time of the month. The Moonlight Tavern is run by Marios and his wife Antonious and together they offer a traditional taverna menu, good food and good service - their huge pork chops are excellent and possibly the best in Pissouri! In the winter eat inside, in the summer outside under the moon and the stars. To find it, walk out of the village square, past the ‘Hideaway’, carry straight on, onto the road, turn right, and it is on your right.
The Two Friends The Two Friends is an excellent restaurant on the edge of the village with a good menu and an extensive range of wines. Stelios and his wife do the cooking and are assisted by Fitos, a local organic grape farmer. Marvellous views across the countryside towards the east and in the evening for the few days after a full moon, watch the moon rise as you eat. You will find The Two Friends on the main road to the beach just as it leaves the village.
Bunch of Grapes Now owned and run by Stavros & his wife, the Bunch of Grapes was what made Pissouri “courtyard restaurants” famous. It has now achieved its ambition and is better than ever! It is probably one of the very best patio/courtyard restaurants in Cyprus. Its food has always been heavenly perfection, exactly what it is imagined with Cyprus cuisine. The food and service are second to none. A visit to the Bunch of Grapes has become a must for all visitors to Pissouri. Please note that booking is necessary for Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes.
Pissouri Tavern This tavern is located in the village square and is very Cypriot in character. In the summer eat out in the square. It is very popular and also participates when there is a Cyprus night in the square.
Vraka Tavern The second taverna in the village square, run by the family who run the nearby Hideaway Restaurant. The evening menu has been expanded to include Greek dishes and a range of simple grills.
Andreas’s Creperie Found in the village square, Andreas Creperie is open all day and until very late, offering a huge variety of pancakes and crepes, cooked while you wait. Buy one and take it to one of the bars to eat it with a drink. Now run by Andreas’s son as Andreas has opened the Flamingo!
The Hide Away As its name implies, it is hidden away just off the village square. This is another of Pissouri’s famous “courtyard restaurants”. Good service and good food. Excellent for grilled meat and very popular with the residents and visitors alike. It also boasts an excellent dessert menu for those with a sweet tooth.
Evros Kebab House In the village centre serving traditional grilled meats, kebabs, pork & lamb chops. Excellent food, very low prices. It is perfect for a quick bite or for an informal dinner.
Hilltop View Restaurant Hill Top Restaurant is the place to go for a relaxed evening when time is not important and is one of the best restaurants to enjoy spectacular views. Extensive restaurant menu. Excellent steaks. Booking advised - closed on Mondays.
Olympus Palace A relatively new restaurant, ideal for that special night out. Pleasant decor, varied and imaginative menu, prices a little higher than the average elsewhere.
Pissouriana Pissouriana is a Pool Bar with the most magnificent views. It is frequented by many English families for the use of the pool. Good food and English, rather than a Cypriot atmosphere.
Flamingo Cafe Bar In 2008 Andreas opened the Flamingo Bar at the lower end of the Village Square. Enjoy a drink after your meal with a view of the whole square: seats will be at a premium on Wednesday when you will have a view of the Cyprus night.
Sparti Pub Sparti is a traditional pub. Go out of the square past the Vraka. In the summer the street outside is full of tables. Sparti has an excellent friendly service. Buy a pizza or crepe from the takeaway further along the street, or a kebab from the square, and eat it with your drink. No one minds if you buy food elsewhere and eat it with your food. That is Cyprus, Pissouri in particular! The Sparti Pub, closes when all the customers go home, however late!
The Panda Chinese Take-away This is a very good Chinese take-away. Order your dinner by phone and simply pick it up on the way home. Great food at reasonable prices.
The Vine Leaf A traditional Cypriot restaurant operated and managed by its owner, Athos. You will always enjoy the food and the informality. In the summer eat under the vines, and in the winter in front of a log fire. Cypriots regard his Meze as one of the best. He is proud of his fish, and his lamb really is, as Athos says himself “the best in the area”. As they say about Cyprus itself, go there once and you will always return. Excellent live entertainment between May and October.
The Yialos Tavern Yialos was built to provide its customers with delightful views over the bay. The Yialos Tavern offers a quality menu, with excellent service. It is particularly good for fish dishes in which it specialises.
Liminaki Restaurant Right on the beach front, the original beach taverna, offers drinks, snacks and meals throughout the year. It is the perfect place for a relaxing lunch with a sea view.
Artemis Situated in an impressive new building just across the road from Pepis. Can be seen as either a restaurant or a taverna, and for that reason often appeals to those seeking more sophisticated dining.
Captains Bay Restaurant Has the prime position on the sea front, and like the other beach tavernas offers meals, snacks and drinks of all kinds.
Agamemnon Along the beach towards the east, almost in front of Yialios, you will find Agamemnon almost on the beach. You cannot miss its yellow tables and chairs! Open in the summer for meals and snacks of all kinds. Well worth a visit.
Kastros A new but traditional taverna, offering a wide choice of meals for all tastes with an excellent view during daylight hours.
