The Limassol region

The Limassol region

Cyprus has fantastic weather all year round and with its beautiful beaches, traditional Tavernas and array of cafes and bars appeals to a wide range of tourists, from those interested in sun and sand holidays to those who prefer to soak up the island's culture.

The island's second largest city, Lemesos (Limassol) is the capital of Limassol District and has the largest coastal resort on the island located on Akrotiri Bay, on the southern coast. It is significantly famous for its sites of historical and archaeological importance with its historical center located around its medieval castle and the Old Port and spreads along the Mediterranean coast between two ancient city-kingdoms, Amathous to the east and Kourion to the west, two of the most spectacular archaeological sites in Cyprus. To the west of the city is Pissouri midway between Limassol and Paphos.

Limassol district offers a wide range of activities and caters for many interests in order to provide the perfect location for a holiday throughout the year. Along the coast you can explore The medieval castle site of the royal wedding in the Middle ages between Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre, Visit the Crusader castle at Kolossi, take a trip to the ancient city of Curium (Kourion) with its impressive Greco-Roman cliff-top theatre where you may enjoy a summer play or concert under the stars, take in the spectacular sunsets at the Petra tou Romiou, the legendary birthplace of the Greek Goddess of Love Aphrodite, visit the Tomb of the Kings, or explore the many lavishly frescoed Byzantine churches.

Further afield north-west you will find the Akamas peninsula a National Park where green and loggerhead turtles are protected as they lay their eggs on the beach and the newly hatched baby turtles make a dash back into the sea to avoid their many predators.

Top places to play golf, enjoy numerous water activities such as scuba diving, jet skiing para-gliding etc. or go hiking or biking if you feel energetic. There are also water parks, go-karting tracks and horseback riding for you to enjoy. Enjoy the lively atmosphere of nearby Paphos and Limassol and the bustling harbor and seafront or relax and enjoy a meze in one of the many interesting Tavernas in the gorgeous mountain scenery of the Troodos with its cooler air.

Or why not simply come and discover the areas beautiful beaches which are diverse in style, something for everyone. Cyprus has an excellent climate with the sea retaining its warmth well into December.

Ladies' Mile This is a superb beach with grainy white sand and shallow clear water. Governor's Beach has a sandy coastline and shallow clear water with a rocky area beneath the shore ideal for snorkeling and fishing. Kourion Beach is a large beach and is one of the most spectacular beaches in Limassol. The ruins of the Ancient Roman Kourion Amphitheatre are just next to the beach on a high mountain, which is also a popular spot for hand-gliders to emerge from. Sailing and wind-surfing opportunities are assured here. Pissouri Beach a blue flag beach is clean with warm water and it is one of the safest for swimming, offering water sports activities during the summer months. It is a quiet and un-spoilt area as Pissouri is a small village which does not get overcrowded with many tourists. Furthermore, there are many restaurants along the beach offering the delicious traditional cuisines of Cyprus.

Pissouri

The Pissouri / Pissouri Village area

This resort is situated midway between Paphos and Limassol just off the main Paphos to Limassol road making it the ideal location perfect for couples and families wishing to escape the crowds but have the choice of relaxation or lively activities. The easy access to the motorways, the unique location and the spectacular views make it a wonderful choice.

At one time Pissouri village, perched on the hillside overlooking the sea, had a fishing jetty a few kilometres away down the hill, known as Pissouri jetty. Now they are two distinct communities, Pissouri village and Pissouri Beach. Whilst Pissouri village offers visitors the opportunity to experience traditional Cypriot life and ambience, Pissouri Bay, which is a short 5 minute drive from the Villa, offers a range of activities based around the beach. Villa Gaia-Mai is ideally located to enable visitors to enjoy both experiences. The south-facing village, set high up on the hillside about 1,000 feet above the sea, commands the most magnificent view of some 20 miles of Mediterranean coastline. Surrounded by vineyards and beautiful scenery perfect for the enthusiastic walker the resort has a unique character and attractiveness to the visitor and holiday maker.

The Cypriot character has been retained, it is still very much a working village.

The quiet and private location of the villa on the edge of the village makes it an ideal position from which to stroll to the village square which you will fall in love with. There you will find a whole range of bars, tavernas and many excellent restaurants as well as a beautiful Greek Orthodox Church, a good bakery and butchers, supermarkets, postal agency, banks, internet cafe, etc. The traditional cobbled square is the center of Pissouri life an idyllic setting in which to enjoy local dishes and refreshing beer and wines, relaxing at a table, watching the world go by.

The village is lively in the summer evenings and has managed to maintain its essentially Cypriot character with locals and visitors coming together to revel in the music and dancing of 'Cyprus Night' on Wednesday evenings or the wine festivals which are not to be missed in the summer. Cypriots do not need an excuse to celebrate! There are also music and dancing events during the summer at the open-air amphitheatre seating 800, spectacularly set high up on the edge with panoramic views towards to the bay acting as a stunning backdrop.

Pissouri Bay:

To the foot of the hill, a five minute drive from the villa lies Pissouri Bay, a beautiful Blue Flag beach of sand and shingle has a gradual slope, making it ideal for children and from which a range of water sports are available, including Scuba Diving, snorkelling, waterskiing, body boarding, wind and kite surfing (lessons available), sailing, jet skiing and some paragliding for those a bit more daring. Here hotels, bars and restaurants contribute to a lively and friendly tourist location. Pissouri beach extends from Cape Aspro in the west and ends in the area named "Mavrorotsos" at the eastern end of the beach. Protected by Cape Aspro, with its high vertical cliffs, it creates an admirable combination of mountain and sea that make it unique. The coast stretches west along dramatic cliffs to Aphrodite's Rock. In addition to Pissouri Bay there is a wonderful almost deserted beach in the next bay Avdimou.

The holiday villa is ideally situated for the golf enthusiast with 2 excellent courses the Secret Valley and world renowned five star Aphrodite Hills Championship Golf Clubs an easy 15 minute drive along a beautiful scenic route with spectacular sea views. Pissouri is only 25 km away from the new Limassol Marina. Walking in the pine forests surrounding Pissouri Village is a very relaxing way to spend some time

Skiing is available in the Troodos Mountains during the Winter months depending on weather conditions.

"Fabulous Villa"

We cannot recommend the villa highly enough. It was spotlessly clean, modern and very spacious. The villa is situated about ten minutes walk to Pissouri village with some lovely restaurants and bars and a short drive to Pissouri bay. Apart from the steps at the front entrance, the villa is on one level and has a huge kitchen which is very well equipped and has everything you need.the spacious pool and garden area are lovely and can be lit up at night which is really nice for sitting out. there are six sunbeds plus three different tables and chairs in different positions around the garden. There is a big barbecue which we didnt make use of as we were trying the local eateries. The pool is cleaned every few days and the garden well maintained. Pissouri is a very quiet resort not like Paphos and still has all its charm as is not overdeveloped like some of the main resorts. You do need a car to make the most of your stay and to get about but it is an excellent base being an equal distance between Paphos and Limassol. The area is pretty quiet and although a road runs past the villa it is not too noisy and with the garden being elevated the pool area is very private. The communications with Jan the owner were excellent and there is also someone to hand close by should the need arise. The welcome pack was a lovely touch. There is a big supermarket at the bottom of the hill just facing the petrol station before you take the turning to the village and it sells everything at good prices. The pictures do not do the villa any justice as it is really beautiful. We would not hesitate to come back here when we are next visiting Cyprus.

Many thanks for your positive comments and glad you enjoyed your stay. The water, as is usual in Cyprus, is solar heated and backed up with an electric immersion heater. Hot water is abundant and the information I send out now includes this clarification, so thanks for pointing it out.
