The Limassol District

With the magnificent Mount Olympus at the summit of the Troodos Mountains to the north, and edged to the south by some 160km (100 miles) of mediterranean coastline and beaches (including the UK Sovereign military peninsula of Episkopi and Akrotiri), the Limassol District is one of the most beautiful areas of Cyprus.

Blessed by blue skies, sunshine and low humidity for best part of the year, and winters which are mild, Cyprus is very much an all-year round destination. Rainfall in winter is just enough to keep the countryside green, whilst the Troodos mountains are high enough to attract a decent snow-fall. It is true that, in winter, one can ski on Mount Olympus in the morning and swim in the mediteranean in the afternoon!

An island renowned as the mythical birth-place of Aphrodite (the Greek goddess of love and beauty), Cyprus has a colourful history dating back to at least 10,000 BC. In more recent times, it has been under the control of the Knights Hospitallers of the Order of St John in the 13th century (whose castle still stands at Kolossi, just west of Limassol) and was a British colony from 1925 until 1960. The splendid archaelogical site of the 7th century city of Kourion (Curium), with its reconstructed amphitheatre, is one of the district's gems.

The Troodos mountains boast several monasteries and churches that are counted among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, the richest and most famous of which is the Kykkos monastery.

Pissouri / Pissouri Village area

Residents of Pissouri rightly describe the village and bay as '...a place set by nature on the edge of heaven' (www.about-pissouri.com).

The traditional Cypriot village has a wonderful selection of tavernas and bars, banks, shops (including a book shop), an internet cafe and a post office, as well as a taxi-office and surgeries for a local doctor and a dentist.
During the summer season, the village hosts a popular 'Cyprus Night' of music, dancing and feasting on every Wednesday evening in the village square.

If that is not enough, Pissouri also has its own amphitheatre, which regularly hosts concerts, military bands and traditional Cypriot displays.

Pissouri Bay is ideal for watersports and safe swimming, and is famous for its nesting turtles. The Bay also hosts a 4-star hotel - with high quality restaurants, ideal for that special occasion.

The nearby resort of Paphos provides the additional attractions of a wide-range of quality shops, sea-fishing, horse-riding and a water park. Whilst scattered around the whole area are many charming villages and wineries, each with something different to offer the visitor.
