The Tuscany / Pisa Province region

In the heart of central Italy lies Tuscany, one of the worlds favourite holiday destinations. Visually stunning with verdant, undulating hills, sprinkled with farmhouses and Cyprus trees this region, famous for its art and gastronomic delights is the most thermal in all of Italy. The beauty of Florence on its own would give you good enough reason to visit Tuscany were it not also for Pisa, with her Leaning Tower, Chianti with its famous vineyards and perfectly preserved Siena with the famous Palio horse races held twice a year. Tuscany has over 300km of coastline with miles of golden sandy beaches fringed with fragrant Pinewood forest. Just off the coast lays the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, a collection of islands which present a popular holiday spot.
A breathtakingly beautiful landscape of mountains, hills and coast and blessed with an almost perfect Mediterranean climate. Cool and sunny in the winter, the right amount of rain in the spring and autumn and hot summers give this region a rich and varied agricultural output. This leads to a fabulous cuisine and of course a wonderful restaurant culture. Good food and wine are central to Tuscan identity and almost all towns and villages have an annual festival celebrating their local specialities.
La Lucertola is perfectly located for making the most of the glories of Tuscany.
Pisa – with her world famous Leaning Tower is 20 minutes away and can be clearly seen from the farmhouses.
Lucca – with her immaculate medieval centre and exquisite boutiques is a 15 minute drive away.
Florence – with its wealth of art treasures is about 50 miles away.
Activities
The house is supplied with a map to help you find the numerous walking trails in the vicinity. Other activities include:

Canoeing & Rafting:

Beaches
The relatively wild beach of Marina di Vecchiano is only 8 miles away. The more rocky beaches, ideal for snorkelling are just south of Livorno less than an hour away.
Horse Riding
The wooded maritime nature reserve of San Rossore is just 20 minutes away
Cycling
Bikes can be easily hired at reasonable rates from Lucca.
Bird Watching
From the farmhouses one can see: buzzards, hawks, doves, swallows, wood pigeons, montague's harrier, kestrel, tawny owl, chiffchaff, stonechat, goldfinch, greenfinch, serin, redwing, hoopoe, warbler, blackcap, golden oriole and firecrests.
Torre del Lago – ideal for bird watching and also home of the summer Puccini Music Festival is about 5 miles away.
The Pisa / San Giuliano Terme area
Pisa is world famous for its iconic Leaning Tower dating back to the 12th century and the simply stunning Piazza Dei Miracoli.
Pisa has it's annual festival in June with the famous Luminara night on the third Friday. On this night the town gives itself over to candlelight, fireworks, fun and all night party
San Giuliano Terme is famous for being the home of Percy and Mary Shelley between 1819 and 1821. It is also rightly famous for it's wonderful thermal spa baths - go on treat yourselves!
San Giuliano Terme has its annual cultural festival in September.
Nearby here is a castle above the village of Ripafratta - famous as used as a set in the film An English Patient.
Other nearby gems include:
Vinci ( as in Leonardo Da Vinci) with it's excellent castle museum
Montecarlo Di Lucca - famous for it's fine wines and olive oil - great place for decent lunch!
Viareggio - Famous and fabulous nearby beach resort

La Lucertola was an idyllic spot for some rest and relaxation mixed with sightseeing, trips to the beach and taking in the delights of Tuscany. Well located halfway between Pisa and Lucca, on the side of a hill with fantastic views across to Pisa, away from it all, but within easy distance of all amenities we are pleased to say that we found a gem. The owners live on site and are great hosts - providing helpful hints and tips about places to visit and also to eat! We had a great time and would love to go back again!! |

La Lucertola is in a glorious hills side position above the hamlet of Pugnano with views to Pisa and its leaning tower about 8-10 miles in the distance. The property is immaculately clean and provides for all of your holiday needs. Set in a hillside with olive and orange trees there is amble room for the younger and more energetic ones to explore. The excitement of finding and chasing lizards seems to have no end for the kids. If you're not the most confident of drivers then La Lucertola may not be for you since the drive up and down the hillside can be a bit of a challenge, but you do get used to it. Equally if you dont have full mobility it could be quite hard getting around the land that the property is set in. Pugnano is a hamlet and for provisions the villages of Ripifrata and Molina can be accessed by car in only a handful of minutes. Alternatively, walking there in the morning to get fresh bread kick starts your day and allows you to savour all the bird song and noises of this lovely area of Tuscany. We found La Lucertola to be an ideal base for all the places we wanted to visit. Pisa and Lucca are 15-20 minutes away and a great day can be had around visiting the tower or walking/cycling around the ramparts in the cities respectively. A little further afield the amazing city of Florence and contrasting hills side village of San Gimignano can be accessed in a little over an hour. To the north you can easily get into the lower reaches of the mountains in 45-60 minutes and we enjoyed the town of Barga. In all a great property with fantatic views and very well position to explore coast, village, town and city. |

The initial journey up to the property was more bumpy than anticipated but once we arrived and saw the views and the property it was all worthwhile. Really nice size house and very well equipped. Had a fabulous stay at La Lucertola, the location was great, Luisa, Colin and Max were very welcoming and helpful. We did plenty of sightseeeing and also lots of relaxing by the pool. Pisa by night was great but book beforehand if you want to go up the tower, easy to drive to from the property and easy to park. Lucca was nice, you can hire bikes and cycle around the walls of Lucca. Enjoyed a rafting trip which was wonderful, location was beautiful and we all had a fabulous time. Thank you for a wonderful holiday. |
Guestbook for La Lucertola
Great stay for all the family
We went to La Lucertola to celebrate my Mother's 60th birthday. We were 4 adults and two boys (5 and 18mth). We all had an amazing time. The location is great (right between Pisa and Lucca) and the farmhouse is nestled into the top of a Tuscan hill. The view that greets you in the morning is soul-nourishing, at night you have the thousands of fireflies for company that makes you feel like you're in the middle of a Disney movie! Luisa and her family have struck a great balance between providing you with what you need (and thoughtful extras) and backing off to let you enjoy the farmhouse as if it's your own. I can heartily recommend a visit, we can't wait to go back. Don't miss out on using the pizza oven for the most gorgeous pizzas ever (if I do say so myself).

Perfect Tuscan holiday hideaway
Comments -
This is an amazing hideaway retreat and such a treasure to find. We loved it from the moment we climbed the fab rustic italian road up to the house...laughing all the way up! The farmhouse is perfect and we spent most evenings perched on the balcony watching the fireflies twinkling in the olive groves and listening to the owls and the occasional wild boar and her piglets! amazing! You cant help but just stare out to the endless views and forget about work and home life back in the UK. Brilliant! This was a much needed holiday where both of us truely relaxed.
Places to Visit -
We visited the obvious Pisa and were really surprised. It was so much better than either of us had anticipated. We went on a sunday and there was a lovely bric a brac/antique fair going on through the back streets of pisa that was great. Plus parking is free on a sunday!
Florence - a beautiful city. Had an amazing lunch and spent all afternoon walking round.
Siena - The absolute highlight of our holiday. If there is one place you must visit this is it. It is beautiful! It is a medieval city on the top of 3 hills and the buildings are amazing. It has a real tuscan feel to it, tradional italy at its best.
We got the train to florence and siena and this was definaltely the best option. You can park for free at san guiliano terme and get the 10 minute train to pisa central then on from there. The trains in italy are so cheap and were on time and quick. This was so much easier than driving and having to worry about parking etc. Definately recommend
Suggestions -
We will most definaltely be back in the future. We have fallen in love with it.

We had fantastic weather, the house was immaculate and very well appointed. The views from the terrace and balconies are stunning, you can see the leaning tower!
Lovely grounds with orange and olive trees, kids loved the freedom. Very easy trip to Pisa or Lucca, our favourite.

What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Waking up in the morning, and stepping onto the balcony; from where the views were stunning. I've seldom experienced a place where the tranquillity is almost tangible. Our two daughters couldn't wait to go outside and play and explore all day with Max, our hosts' son, and a fantastic playmate. Leaving us to just relax. Blissful!
