In Short: Located adjacent to the Santa Maria district, this area was previously known as Foriporta as it was located outside the old city walls. In 1860 it assumed its current name of San Francesco, inspired by the church of the same name that was erected between the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century.
Highlights: The area features numerous works of architecture and places of cultural interest. Apart from the San Francesco Church which gives the area its name, one of the main places of interest is the San Matteo Church and the square of the same name, home to the National Museum since 1949. Another sight worth a mention is the Santa Marta Church (built in 1342) and the old San Pietro in Vinculis Church, also known as San Pierino, famous for its unique frescos and mosaics. The area is also home to the Teatro Verdi and the Bagni di Nerone, Roman baths built in the first century A.D.
Getting around: Like Santa Maria, San Francesco can be easily explored on foot and is also well-connected with the urban bus network (lines 2 and 5) and the LAM high-speed bus network (green line).
Why stay: Its proximity to Santa Maria makes it a comfortable district where you can have all the city's places of interest close at hand. In Santa Maria and San Francesco you will find the majority of Pisa's nightlife, including bars and pubs with live music.
