The Tuscany region
Tuscany is one of Italy's best-loved regions. A beautiful and diverse landscape, the region of Tuscany nestles between the blue green Apennines and the Turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea. It is one of the most visited parts of Italy as visitors flock to see the famous art cities, Pisa, Lucca, Siena and Florence, Its breathtaking scenery of rolling hills and cypresses and last but not least to sample its excellent food and wine.
The apartment is situated within the Province of Pisa. For those who enjoy sightseeing and shopping, the city with its famous Leaning Tower and quaint cobbled shopping zone is only 25 to 30 minutes away, although there is much more to see in Pisa than the Leaning Tower. Take a map and a guide book and discover the small lanes and market squares with hidden shops, restaurants and cafés Or head for the River Arno which runs through the city centre. Here you can take a city boat tour or just relax at one of the cafés. It is also possible to hire bikes & rickshaws to explore or take one of the official walking tours.
THE PISAN COAST
In Ancient times Pisa was an important port. Today the port has gone but you can still enjoy a day or two at the coast. Marina di Pisa and the Tyrrhenian coast is just a 30 minute drive away from Vicopisano. Here you will find mostly sandy beaches, lounge bars on the sand, seafood restaurants and wonderful sunsets.
The beautiful medieval walled city of Lucca can be reached in just over half an hour and is well worth a visit, especially in the summer months when its streets are filled with the sound of Puccini. The city is mainly a car fee zone and most citizens get around by bicycles. To feel like a local and explore the city hire a bike at one of the main gates - it's a great way to see the city. A short distance away is Torre del Lago, a small town where you can visit not only Puccini's home but also attend the Puccini opera festival which generally runs throughout the summer months.
Florence needs no introduction with its world famous galleries and monuments, also famous for its shopping and stylish boutiques. It's an easy 45 minute drive away or better still take the train from one of the nearby railway stations.
VOLTERRA & VINCI
Both delightful places to visit and worth a daytrip. Vinci is the birthplace of the famous Leonardo da Vinci, where you can visit a museum dedicated to the Renaissance master and the stone house where he was born .
Volterra is an atmospheric hill town famous for alabaster, (and now the famous Twilight saga) and Etruscan, Roman and Medieval sites are scattered throughout the town. Both Vinci and Volterra are easily reached from Vicopisano and take just under an hour.
The Chianti region with its characteristic towns & villages, such a San Gimignano can be reached within an hour and a half with Siena being just under 2 hours away.
Nestled on the lower slopes of the Monte Pisano is the sleepy Medieval village of Vicopisano which has been described as one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany.
To visit the historic centre of Vicopisano is like stepping back in time with its Medieval towers, cobbled pathways and hidden lanes. Away from the more beaten tracks of Tuscany but close enough to visit its famous sites, Vicopisano is a place where you will witness a more authentic Tuscany where you will see villagers enjoying their morning cappuccino at the local bar, school children queuing for ice cream at the local gelateria, a three wheeler Api (small agricultural vehicle) piled high with local produce and the summer long festivals themed around good food, dining alfresco and dancing under the stars.
The Medieval village of Vicopisano once had more than a hundred towers dotting it's skyline and was famous for its tower houses which were built by noble merchants. These noble merchants flocked to the village in Medieval times due to the village's strategic position. Today these Medieval town houses can still be seen but alas most of the towers have been cut down in size. Despite this there are still many visible towers within in the village.
The village is dominated by the Medieval watch tower and fortress of the Renaissance master Fillipo Brunelleschi. The fortress is now open to the public at the weekends, and the small entrance fee includes a guided tour starting from the dungeons right up to the top of the domineering watch tower. From the top of the tower there is a fabulous photo opportunity to snap or video the spectacular surrounding countryside. The tours are usually lead by Professor Giovanni Fascetti and his team who will not only guide you though this Medieval masterpiece but also give you some insight into the village's history and curiosities.
Well worth a visit is the local parish church PIEVE DI SANTA MARIA. The Church was first mentioned in 934 AD, but documents infer that it already existed some time before. The present construction dates back to the 12th Century and is a well-preserved example of a Pisan-Romanesque church. Positioned in the apse is a magnificent wooden sculpture of the Descent of Christ from the Cross, it dates back to the very early part of the 13th Century. On the massive interior stone walls traces of some 13th Century frescos can be seen of which some have been recently restored.
Nearby public pool 3 miles / 5km / 5 mins drive . Nearest Beach 19 miles / 30km / 30 mins drive. PISA 14 miles / 22km / 20 mins drive / local bus from village. LUCCA: 33 miles / 53km / 45 mins drive / public transport option. FLORENCE 43 miles / 69km / 1 hour drive / train 45 mins. Train station 5 miles / 7.5km / 10 mins drive or bus from village. Siena 82 miles / 132km / 1 hr 40 mins drive or bus from Pisa airport.

It really pleases us to hear that our guests have manged to slow down, relax and enjoy the beauty of the location and hospitality of a small Tuscan town.
Thank you so much for your kind words about the apartment, it is wonderful to know that our guests have had a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
We are pleased that you were able to relax at the beach, not many associate a trip to Tuscany with the beach but when it's very hot it can be a wonderful escape and it's not too far away as you discovered.
You said in your review that you would certainly return and we really hope that you do so that we can welcome you back to our farm and Vicopisano.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences, hints and tips for future guests staying at Appartamento Limone.
It's good to hear that you managed to visit so many places during your stay and that you also went back a second time to visit some of the towns.
It's such a shame you didn't get to do the olive experience which includes a visit to the olive groves, vineyard and olive press. The highlight for most visitors is the tasting of the wonderful oils and wine but then you were lucky enough to try these first hand as all of our guests are treated to a goody bag on arrival!
We are hoping you come back to visit us again because there are still a lot of places you can visit in the vicinity and of course you really should see the olive press in action.
Thank you again for choosing Appartamento Limone

"Nice apartment, beautiful setting, centrally located, wireless poor"
The apartment is on an Olive Farm and is also the olive oil mill for the region. We were there at the start of olive oil milling season so we got to see the olive oil extraction process. That was very interesting. The view from the apartment is beautiful rolling hills and the little nearby town of Vicopisano has just about everything you need. The little fantasy markey in town was a great place to pick up picnic supplies. Not that impressed with restaurants but they were acceptable.
The apartment itself is very modern and looked like it was fairly new. Comfortable and clean. The advertisement said the kitchen was fully equipped but the pots and pans were not of good quality.
The only thing that was a negative is the wireless service. The signal is so poor in the room that you cannot maintain a reliable wireless connection. I had to go outside and down the steps to a little table next to the office to get reliable service. I had chosen the place for the wireless service because I had to keep up on some work while on vacation. I would suggest not advertising the wireless unless it's fixed to provide reliable wireless service in the apartment. I thought this was little false advertising.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review for Appartamento Limone. It was lovely to hear that you enjoyed the beautiful views from the apartment and that you managed to witness the olive harvest and the olive press in action.
It is with regret that you found the WiFi to be poor however we have taken steps to rectify the situation. You will notice that our most recent reviews regarding the Wifi confirm this.
it's great to know that you found every thing you needed in Vicopisano and that our little Fantasy market managed to provide all the necessary staples.
We'd like to thank you again for your support in choosing Appartamento Limone for your holiday and we hope to welcome you back to the farm again one day in the future.

"A triumph of marketing over substance"
Appartamento Limone was very much a last minute choice because our accommodation in nearby Montecatini had become unavailable. The photos on the Holiday Lettings website together with the very professionally presented 27 page pre welcome pack and the high price for a one bedroom apartment on a farm led us to expect something quite special.
The reality was somewhat different.
Judging by the fluorescent light and multiple telephone jacks in the bedroom the property had previously been used as an office and had been subjected to a rather ill thought out conversion into a holiday apartment. While the kitchen area and equipment was certainly adequate for a single bedroom apartment and there was dining table and chairs for six, there were only two easy chairs pushed back against the walls and the only lighting was the ugly globe on the bottom of the ceiling fan. What with no TV or DVD player the prospect of a rainy evening doesn't bear thinking about.
The wet room style shower was a death-trap because wall tiles had been used on the floor. These were so slippery it was impossible to stand safely and we had to use a bathmat on the shower floor so we didn't fall over. During our four-day stay we were unable to eliminate an unsavoury smell, despite running the ventilation fan and ensuring all the drain traps were full
Some of the information on the Holiday Lettings website takes poetic licence to the extreme. There are 20 steps to the apartment rather than 15, plus some rough ground to cross, and the private terrace at the entrance of the property is just part of the plain concrete pathway. The outdoor furniture was shabby and uncomfortable (no seat cushions) and the sunshade was so old it was impossible to put up. And while the large BBQ may well be suitable for cooking up a feast it was totally impracticable for the odd steak for a couple on holiday. The WiFi connection was very unreliable (a very low signal in the lounge area) and not much better even outside.
There was no smoke alarm, fire blanket or first aid kit, nor was there the official form indicating the number of bedrooms as registered with the local authorities. (We do not know if these are a legal requirement throughout Italy but we have found them everywhere else).
The final straw was when people moved into the apartment next door. There is only a standard thin door separating the two apartments and it sounded as if they were in the room with us. Presumably they could hear us equally well.
We note that there is already a review of this apartment on the Holiday Lettings website. We had thought from the new and unused state of most of the appliances and the fact that there was building dust on the window sills and bits of electrical wire on the floor that we had been the first tenants.
On the plus side the apartment is well situated for visiting the sights of Lucca and Pisa, there is a good restaurant within walking distance and all the local shopkeepers are extremely friendly and helpful.
We can't tell which rental market the owners are aiming at, but from our experience there needs to be a bit more care and investment to bring it up to the standards expected by British holidaymakers.
Dear dog lover
Thank you for taking the time to submit your comments. We have taken your feedback very seriously and we very sorry that Appartamento Limone did not live up to your expectations. Our main aim has always been to offer our guests clean comfortable accommodation on our olive farm with the opportunity for guests to immerse themselves into a typical Tuscan environment on a family run farm.
We are sorry that you found the apartment highly priced but after much research into the market we do believe the rate of €70 / £56 /$89 per night to be a fair rate for a one bedroom apartment in this location.
We do advertise the apartment as being simply decorated with modern comforts such as a fully fitted kitchen, air conditioning and free WiFi connection. The farm building did have another use before we converted it into Appartamento Limone and complete care was taken during the renovation. Apart from some of the antique furniture the modern furniture and accessories are new, we are so sorry they are not to your taste but the ceiling fan with the globe light is often used in Tuscan properties. We have never been aware of an unpleasant smell in the apartment and it has never been brought to our attention by other guests.
We were very concerned about your comments regarding the bathroom especially from a safety point of view, to date no other guests have brought this to our attention, however due to your comments we will do our own investigation into this and correct any problems if they are found. The photo of the bathroom in our advert is a perfect representation of what guests will see on arrival, and this room has never been a conversion of a staff toilet.
Our advert does not state that we have a TV or DVD player but we do advertise and provide an MP3 docking station as we are aware many guests now have MP3 players, iPods, iPhones and smart phones.
You mentioned that the patio furniture was very old and shabby which we must disagree with as the wooden patio furniture is brand new. We have looked at the parasol and agree that it does need to be replaced which we will do immediately. You also mentioned your disappointment with the patio itself however we do feel that the photo of the patio area in our advert perfectly represents what guests will see in real life.
The huge BBQ has proved to be an asset to many of our guests and it may be used for just 2 steaks. A member of our family was always close by to assist if assistance had been required.
The steps entering the apartment are not really proper steps they are approximately an inch deep and they were intended to aid people walking up the slight slope. We had counted 15 main gradients in a row then there are occasional random steps also 1 inch deep closer to the entrance. Obviously we will amend this information in our advert.
Our previous guest comment is completely genuine and you may contact the previous guest personally for their feedback through this website. Appartmento Limone has only recently opened its doors and we are sorry we left the new appliances in their boxes, this is an oversight on our part, and we did not think this would offend anybody but would on the contrary reassure guests that everything was brand new.
In compliance with Italian law we register all guests' personal details with the Carabinieri. It is not required that we have information on the back of the door.
It is with sadness that we have not been able to offer you the type of holiday you were seeking. It is such a shame that you did not speak to us during your stay, as you saw our family on many occasions at the farm each day and we welcomed you both along with your lovely dog. If you had expressed such disappointment with our apartment at the time we would have happily refunded your money and we would have helped you find different accommodation in the vicinity which would have been possible as this is a very small community.

"Fantastic stay on a beautiful olive farm in Tuscany"
We recently stayed at this charming apartment for 11 days and it was amazing. The farm where the apartment is situated is beautiful, and the family who own the farm were so kind and friendly. They couldn't do enough for us. Nothing was too much trouble. We really felt at home and we certainly felt like we were in the heart of Tuscany. The apartment was well equipped with everything that we needed, which was really important to us as we have an eight month old baby. The apartment was really big and airy and traditional Italian. We loved it. Although we visited lots of places in Tuscany, it was also just lovely to walk around the farm looking at the beautiful fruit trees and grape vines. The family helped us with directions to places, and lots of information was also provided in the apartment on arrival. We used the welcome pack provided to try out recommended beaches and restaurants. It was such a great help. We were also given the most gorgeous fruit freshly picked off the pretty trees. It was delicious. The apartment is ideally located for visiting many other places in Tuscany. We went to Pisa, Florence, Buti and a couple of beaches, but there is so much more to do and see. There is a small supermarket in the village a few minutes away, but if you want a larger supermarket, there are a couple about 10 minutes and 15 minutes away which we visited a few times. Our plane was delayed by a few hours on the way out to Pisa, and I got a text and a phone call from Marie saying that she was aware that our plane was delayed and that she could order us a taxi when we arrived in Pisa, as our car hire office would be closed - wow, what a service. We were so grateful. When we got there our taxi was waiting. I don't know what we would have done if Marie hadn't have arranged this for us as we arrived after midnight. We have never been given this kind of great service. The next morning rather than having to get a taxi back to the airport Francesco drove us there, waited for us to collect our car and let us follow him back to the farm so we didn't get lost. We got an amazing service from day one and this continued all the way through our holiday. We had a lovely patio outside the apartment where we spent most evenings eating lovely Italian food and drinking a glass of wine. We had a lovely view of the farm, and during the day we also had a gorgeous view of the castle in the village. We are already looking at flights to go back soon. It was fantastic and can't wait to return.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write your wonderful review for Appartamento Limone .
We are so happy that you felt really at home during your stay here and we are delighted you enjoyed discovering the farm's orchards, olive groves and vines.
It was great to hear you managed to explore some of the nearby sites such as Pisa and Florence and you even managed a couple of days on the beach.
We really hope you do get to return again in October, you were great guests and we are looking forward to sharing another glass of prosecco with you soon!
Kind regards and best wishes from the Bovoli family, Marie & lorenzo
