The Slovenian Istria region
The city embraced by the walls and by the wideness of the sea...
Piran lives in lovely little streets and squares which draw your attention. There are numerous hidden galleries, antique-shops, art workshops, taverns and laid-back restaurants which offer great sea dishes and attract you with exquisite home-made wine.
Piran is a place where every visitor can enjoy the beautiful surroundings with the taste of sea and can give in to a peaceful rhythm and satisfy his or her own expectations of relaxing holidays.
Piran is full of city palaces, small churches and monuments that are preserving the touch of the Mediterranean.
This medieval city with paved streets still has a genuine feel as it remained unchanged.
MUSIC and ART
The centre of Piran is the Tartini Square, once a harbor (sea gulf) for merchant ships, fishing boats and old sailing-boats. By filling in the harbor they gave the Square a new look, covering it in white marble. Round the Square they built all the important institutions (Town Hall and Court House) and civil buildings among which the so called Venetian House is the best preserved one.
The Square was dedicated to the Italian violinist and composer, Giuseppe Tartini, who owned a music school in Piran which pupils from all across Europe attended. Today here are organized Piran Musical Evenings, the Primorska Summer Festival, the International Painting Manifestation Ex-Tempore and several art exhibitions, fairs and shows that are part of the city life, identity and cultural pride.
You can make your summer evenings more enjoyable by going to a good concert in the freshness of the Closters of the Minorite Convent. You can also attend other cultural events in a pleasant atmosphere of the concert scenes of Piran or visit the vivid pubs of that host talented musicians.
IMPORTANT SIGHTS OF PIRAN
From every part of Piran you can go up to the St. George Cathedral that extends over the city and to the city walls. Here you can enjoy the beautiful view over Piran, the Slovenian coast and magical sunrise or sunset.
When the sky is clear the view extends all the way to Venice which you can reach by going on a cruise with Prince of Venice or choosing any other ship from the Piran Marine 2-3 times a week in the main season.
Colorful slopes that give color to a day.
Beyond Piran fruit and olive plantations are extending and are perfect for a morning walk or for romantic evenings. The easiest way to reach them is by following the marked Olive path (Olj?na pot).
The roots of the olive trees of Piran are well implanted in the lives of inhabitants.
Fans of water sports can enjoy in the depths of the sea with experienced divers of Piran. You can also join the sailing course in a city with a long sailing tradition. Maybe you can play a relaxing tennis game in the shade of cypresses or go on a long trip by bike.
Piran is also a great starting point when going on a trip with a special boat called Solinarka that travels coastwise and takes you to the Se?ovlje salt pans where former owners were from Piran.
This exceptionally beautiful salt pan land is a promised land for everyone who wants to experience the nature in all its glory. A watchful eye can capture a moment when human work and natural diversity intertwine in an extremely interesting way.
Submediterranean climate, high percentage of salt in the water in shallow polls and the traditional salt producing create special ecological conditions that support the diversity of species and their living space.
Beside the extremely diverse animal world with special attention to the fauna of birds with over 270 bird sorts and different types of salt pans like the brine shrimp (Artemia salina) and a fish calles tooth carp (Cyprinodon fasciatus). It is also possible to visit the Salt works museum in a renovated salt pans house where workers once lived.
Salt pans are still open and are still producing the Piran salt.

"Adorable House in adorable little City"
We had a wonderful week in the lovely city of Piran. Grega is a perfect host. He picked us up at the city entrance, had already bought some fruit and vegetables on the local market for us and gave us valuable tips for our vacation. He even bought us some more fruit after a few days. There are bikes for free use, only to share with the guests of Zappa's House. The House No. 1 itself is simply adorable. The different rooms are all styled with a great sense for little details and are connected by the tall staircase. On top of it all there is the wonderful roof-terrace, that invites to spend the mild evenings in the deck-chairs. Just be prepared for a decent share of stairclimbing!
