The Andalucia region

Things to do:

Aqua Sherry (Water Theme Park):

Puerto de Santa Maria (Cadíz). Seventeen fun-filled rides, plus a picnic area, at this relatively new aquapark located in between Cadiz and Puerto de Santa María. Adults 13 euro. Children 9 euro. Tel: 956 870 511

Day trips to Morocco:

Crossing with High speed Catamaran to Tanger. Upon arrival full sightseeing of the town - Kasbah, Zocco, modern town... - with English speaking guide. Moroccan Lunch and transfer to the pier for embarkation Tarifa or Algeciras. (

Whale Watching:

Not far from Cadiz (about 100 km), in Tarifa, you can go on a boat for whale watching, to see (well, to try at least) whales, dolphins, sperm whales... They offer daily excursions on the strait of Gibraltar, from where you can see the African coast too. (

The province of Cádiz is famous for sherry, a classification which ranges from the dry, white manzanilla from Sanlúcar de Barrameda to the syrupy Cream sherry traditionally popular in England.

The officially designated sherry-producing region forms a triangle between Jeréz, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. 10,000 hectares of chalky albariza soil between the Guadalquivir River in the West and the from which sherry is produced.

La Ruta Del Vino - The Sherry Circuit. This route takes in the sherry-producing towns of the region. You can start in El Puerto de Santa María, the home of fino, and drive along the coast through Rota and Chipiona to Sanlúcar de Barrameda to sample the local manzanilla. From here the route passes through gently rolling chalky hills planted with vines. You will go through the little town of Trebujena, located in the heart of the vineyards as you make your way towards Jeréz, the sherry capital. The tour can be extended south of El Puerto to Chiclana, which still has a few small bodegas. There are also many bodegas that are open to the public and for a small admission fee (about 5-10 euros) offer a guided tour around - and usually a sample at the end

There are many excellent restaurants within a 30 minute drive from the villa, but because individual tastes vary it is difficult to compile a recommended list - in over 5 years of dining in the area we can honestly say we have found very few (if any) bad restaurants. In our opinion, the restaurants of Nova Sancti Petri & Bahia Sur aim mostly at the (Spanish) tourist market and although some are excellent restaurants can be slightly overpriced. The real gems can be found in the small backstreets of Cadiz and the other older towns where thge restaurants cater for the locals. There are many excellent restaurants too in Puerto Santa Maria where the atmosphere in the evening is lively.

Do remember though, that the Spanish are very late eaters and most restaurants dont even open until 9pm - and once seated don't expect to be served straight away by a speedy waiter/waitress. The Spanish take their time over their meals and for them to prolong their stay in the restaurant for 2-3 hours is quite normal.

Why not try horse riding at the many riding stables nearby.

Sailing, wind surfing and even kite surfing are available at many of the beaches.

Dolphin watching (from nearby Cadiz)

Go Kart racing at Conil

Have a flutter at the casino just outside Puerto Santa Maria

Relax at a nearby Spa

Situated just off the white sands of the Atlantic and the unspoilt beach at La Barrossa. A magnificent setting 24km from Cadiz and 40km from Jerez.

The original Novo Sancti Petri course was the first course in Spain designed by Seve Ballesteros and inaugurated in 1990. The course now offers 36 holes which are divided into two rounds of 18 holes (Mar-Pinos and Centro).

On arrival you will find a magnificent clubhouse with large rooms, bar facilities, terraced areas and an a la carte restaurant. The changing facilities are first class with well-equipped shower facilities and a sauna to relax in. There is a well-stocked pro shop and the club has 10 PGA qualified golf professionals running a very successful golf academy. You can enjoy group tuition or a one to one basis. There is a large practice area with space for 70 people as well as putting and pitching greens.

As for the course itself it is an extremely pleasant and easy walk but buggies can be hired if required. Only soft spikes can be worn. The course offers beautiful combinations of holes for players of all levels. Any 18 hole combination has a par of 72 and a Standard Scratch Score of 74 for blue and white tees and one of 72 for red and yellow tees. The 6th hole is the most spectacular with the undulating green reaching out to the sandy beach. There are holes where you can open your shoulders and test your woods but others where you have to be wary of the water hazards, abundant vegetation and bunkers. There are marker posts to the green for 150m (red markers) and 100m(yellow markers) In one round the fairways are bordered by pine tress but in the other you are looking at magnificent views of the Atlantic. Hit the ball straight and enjoy yourself but beware the "ocean breeze" that can make such a difference!

Golf El Puerto and Club de Golf Vista Hermosa:

Apart from the historical and cultural aspects of the city, it features Golf El Puerto and Club de Golf Vista Hermosa both challenged with rather tricky water hazards typical of the area. Sited north of Cadiz in the bay nearby Cadiz, Vista Hermosa is a 9-hole course opened in 1975. It is a typical members club in the heart of the upper class Vista Hermosa development. Visitors are welcome!

The course is beautiful and can best be described as a park land-style course. It is tricky to play with its narrow fairways, plenty of trees, American style water hazards and the frequent Levante wind. The holes at Vista Hermosa provide a serious challenge for any golfer. Variety is one of the main features of this course, and you will need to be really accurate on some of the holes due to the strategically placed water hazards. Vista Hermosa offers visitors several other facilities. Another 9 holes are planned.

Valderrama is a 6356 metres par 71 with no hole of less than championship quality but it can be fully enjoyed by players of all handicaps, thanks to the genius of Robert Trent Jones, Senior, whom many consider the leading golf architect of his day

Each hole has a Professional tee (6356 metres), a Club Championship tee (5994), an Executive tee (5498) and a Seniors' tee (5053), as well as a ladies Professional tee (5294) and a ladies Club tee (4873). The tees are differentiated not just by distance but by careful siting.

The 8th is a short par 4 and after a well placed tee shot requires no more than a pitch to the green, but the distance must be judged precisely to carry the large bunker partly surrounding the green.Valderrama has two prevailing winds: the poniente from the land, which in summer can be very hot, and the levante from the Mediterranean, which brings a cooler sea breeze. The changed conditions, depending on which one is blowing, add variety to a golf course that is already rich in shot values.

The Practice Ground is near the Clubhouse and has been described by Nick Faldo as the best in Europe. Since that comment was made the facilities have been much improved. Valderrama has superb drainage. Once, during the week of the Volvo Masters, it suffered 7 ½" of rain, yet the tournament was still completed on time.

"A spacious villa which was very clean, comfortable and well equipped"

Once inside the entrance to the villa I was amazed at the space around the lovely pool and the villa. There is plenty of space for outdoor living and lots of seating areas in the shade when you need shade from the sun. There are two luxury bathrooms and four good size bedrooms with great storage. The villa is well cared for and very clean, a home from home. I have stayed here before with both family groups and friends groups and if you are looking for a rural Spanish location with all your home comforts then this is an ideal villa. There is a large supermarket 5 minutes drive away which is ideal and the villa is in easy reach of the sea and for exploring this lovely part of Spain. I will certainly be back in the future and would highly recommend this villa.
