The Poitou-Charentes region
The region has a micro - climate and the second highest temperatures and most hours of sunshine according to the weather centre in Cognac. It enjoys almost as much sunshine as the south of France.
With easy access from the southern channel ports, or use of local airports, it is a popular destination for British holidaymakers seeking a sun / relaxing holiday.
However there is much more to this area than sunshine including fortified cities and vineyards. Angouleme, the capital is only 42 km to the north and is worth a visit for its Romanesque architecture, excellent restaurants and a good shopping centre. Each September Les Circuits des Ramparts, one of only 3 classic car races in the world, takes place through the streets of Angouleme.
Chalais which is approx 15 kms away holds its market day every Monday & also boasts an excellent restaurant in its old chateau.
Riberac approx 18km away in the Dordogne, has its market on Fridays, a good place to select your picnic items and head to Lake Jemaye. Here you will find large nature trails, water sports, horse riding and a sandy beach with shops and restaurants for a great day out.
Brantome approx 46 km away is very picturesque and well worth a visit.
There are also highly rated theme parks such as Puy du Fou and Futuroscope.
Pillac is ideal for bike rides and walks or just to relax. It is surrounded by acres of sunflowers in the summer. Aubeterre is approx. 9 kms. from "Les Cotes" and is rated as one of the most beautiful towns in the region. It has a market which is held on Sunday mornings and features local arts, crafts and produce.
There is also puppet show for children and adults alike, but booking is essential. Much of the town is pre-Roman, in particular the Eglise Monolithe, an ancient place of worship in a gigantic cave. There are many restaurants and cafes, many of which are in a beautiful shady square - just the place to while away the afternoon with a coffee or aperitif! The town is situated on the river Dronne, which has an excellent safe river beach and is excellent for young children. Canoeing and tennis are also available.
As mentioned previously Lake Jemaye, a half hour's drive away has a lovely swimming and bathing lake which has recently been extensively developed with restaurants, children's play areas and a nature trail. This is an extremely good place to spend the day.
The nearest supermarket (Spar) is just 5 minutes drive away in the nearby town of St. Severin which has a bank, butcher, baker, newsagent and post office. You will also find "La Petite Etoile"a coffee shop with WIFI. Larger supermarkets are in Montmoreau saint Cybard (10 mins), Chalais (20 mins) and Riberac (20mins)
There are many pleasant walks in the surrounding area which are a haven to many varieties of birds and animals, including deer and wild boar.

"Wish we were back there!!!"
This is one of the easiest reviews I have had the pleasure to write! As a family (4 adults, 2 kids) we have stayed in many gites/barns/houses throughout southern and western France, and les cotes was far and away the best located for peace and quiet (which we go for) and facilities. The rooms were clean, tidy and a good size. The kitchen was so well stocked we didn't need anything. The games room was a nice touch, although the weather was so good we didn't use it at all. And as for the pool area it was perfect!! Enough seating, a bit of shade for everyone and a clean, refreshing pool. A trip in to aubeterre is a must, the market on Sundays is great. Some great bars and reataurants with live music most summer nights. As for les cotes, yes we were lucky with the weather, but even we couldn't have expected such peace, tranquility and a restful time. Len was the perfect host, replying quickly and answered all questions. We will definitely be back here!!
Thank you for your kind comments and review of property. Look forward to you staying again.

"Idyllic, peaceful, relaxing, spacious, beautiful"
I think the title says it all. The property is on a quiet lane which is hardly used and there is only one other property within a half mile radius. In the evenings the location is dead quiet (apart from the odd cricket) with no light pollution so the stars are incredible. We made full use of the swimming pool and BBQ. There are several shops (small independent shops and large supermarkets) ten to twenty minutes drive away so you're not too isolated. The house is on two floors: the first floor has the living quarters (kitchen, living room, bedrooms, bathroom and toilet). The ground floor has a playroom, laundry room and another toilet. The photos don't do justice to the house.
Thank you for your comments and taking the time to carry out the review. we look forward to you staying at Les Cotes again in the future.

"Fantastic peaceful vacation with a super swimming pool"
Enjoyed a great stay at Les Cotes. Very comfortable property that contained all we needed for our family vacation. Swimming pool was a very welcome addition given the hot weather and on most evenings we enjoyed the heat of the sun until 7.30PM. Closest village for morning croissants was a few miles drive away and drive a little further to see the very pretty town of Aubeterre. My only comment on this area of France is we tended to have to drive quite a distance to find other attractions. Visited Cognac and Remy Martin which was great and canoeing in Aubeterre is well worth doing.
Thank you for your kind comments and look forward to seeing you at Les Cotes again

"Absolutley lovely peaceful retreat"
There were 5 in our group including my 2 children aged 6 and 9. The children made use of the spacious pool almost daily. On the days the weather was not so hot there was plenty to keep the children entertained inside. We had a few BBQs in the evenings which were lovely sat in the sunshine in the peace and quiet. You really can't believe how quiet it is in this pretty village. We travelled into Aubetterre in the evenings and founds a couple of lovely restaurants where the staff were very friendly and spoke English. The house was equipped with everything you would ever need and more. Very modern and clean property.
Hi Mrs Keel, I am glad you and your family had a satisfactory and relaxing stay at Les Cotes. Thank you for your feed back, and kook forward to you staying again Regards Len

"My Late weekend break"
This was my first visit to the Pilac area of France and would honestly say this is a beautiful part of the country. The accomodation I stayed in with friends for a long weekend was a comfortable one and a half hours drive from Bordeaux Airport through some stunning countryside. On our arrival we were suprised on the size of the acommodation which would comfortably home Eight people with plenty of room. With stunning views of the french countryside from every window . The acomodation comes complete with all the creature comforts you get when you are at home plus the added bonus of a private swimming pool. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay so much that we are returning in 2012 in Mayl for a long weekend and again in the summer for a two week stay.
Hi I am glad you enjoyed your short break so much that you booked a further two breaks with us. I look forward to seeing you again soon.

"Idyllic isolated location yet within 10 minutes of pretty Aubterre sur Dronne"
Les Cotes stands alone and is surrounded by walnut tree orchards and sweetcorn fields which gives the location a feeling of quintessentially rural French life. It will suit you if, like us, you prefer to see as few people as possible on holiday. The house is spacious and very well equipped. It has a fabulous swimming pool within a fenced enclosure, although parents should be aware that there is no survellience of the pool from the house itself. The house is only a 10 minutes drive from Aubterre-sur-Dronne a lovely village, voted prettiest in France on a number of occasions. This has a central square where there is a market and numerous good places to eat, although there did seem to be a lot of English people owning local businesses. The local river offers great (easy) canoeing and a man-made beach. The underground Church is definately worth a visit. We had a lovely relaxing holiday with children aged 11, 8 and 6 and would thoroughly recommend Les Cotes which offers good value for money.
Hi, I would like to thank you for your feedback and we are glad that you enjoyed your time at Les Cotes. We look forward to you staying again
