Pietrasanta owes its name to its founder, Guiscardo Pietrasanta, who built it by orders of the republic of Lucca towards the middle of the XIII century. Lucca was challenged by Pisa and Pietrasanta fell under the power of the latter in 1312. Successively, it was subjected to Castruccio Castracani degli Antelminelli (1316-1328), Lord of Lucca, until his death. It passed in 1341 to Firenze who kept it until the exile of the Duke d’Atene. In the end, Pietrasanta was consigned to the unruly soldiers of the Bishop of Luni, Antonio del Fiesco, to make the offensive of Luchino Visconti - Lord of Milan - easier, at war against Pisa, who possessed the Fort of Motrone. In 1344 following the victory of Milan, Pietrasanta returned under the dominion of Lucca, then was again subjected to Pisa in 1355. When Lucca regained its autonomy, in 1369, Pietrasanta returned to the regime of the Anziani, and remaining there until 1430. Pledged then to Genova, the town again experienced the government of Firenze in 1484, it was subjugated to Carlo VIII ten years later and again to Lucca in 1496. In 1513 by a ruling of Pope Leone X it went definitively to Firenze. Cosimo I accentuated its military centre aspect inserting it in a system of fortifications (Barga, Fivizzano etc,) destined to control northern Toscana and the Valichi Appenninici. From the XVII century Pietrasanta became progressively decadent, mainly because of the malaria, from which it could free itself only at the beginning of the 1800s, through the completed regulation of the water. In 1841 Leopoldo II di Lorena bestowed the title of Noble City to Pietrasanta “for the rank assumed, its antiquity, the Lordly buildings, the institutional importance, as well as the residences of many noble and wealthy families”. Among its illustrious sons are recorded the sculptures Lorenzo (ca. 1455-1506) and Stagio Stagi (ca.1496-1563), the physicist Eugenio Barsanti (1821-1864) and the poet Giosuè Carducci (1835-1907). Pietrasanta areaHistoric and artistic capital of Versilia, Pietrasanta remains faithful to its tradition, showing examples of religious, military and civilian architecture. Without any doubt Piazza Duomo is the undiscussed value of the town. Dominated by the "Rocca di Sala" (XIV century, which rises from the homonymous hill with its bastion and embattled walls in a thick olive-grove). Hearth of the historic centre, the square is encircled by the San Martino's Cathedral (XIV century) with its red brick belltower, the Sant'Agostino's church (XIV century), the "Torre delle Ore" (Tower of the Hours, XVI), and sober buildings among which the Palazzo Pretorio (XIV century), Palazzo Panichi (or Carli) and the Rocchetta Arrighina (XIV century) and the Palazzo Moroni (XVI century). The square is moreover embellished by the Fonte del Marzocco (XVI century), the Colonna della Liberta (XVI century) and the monument to Leopoldo II (XIX century). Other important buildings of the historic centre are: the Sant'Antonio's church (XIV century) that houses two large frescoes by Fernando Botero, San Francesco's church (XVI century) and the Palazzo della Posta Vecchia (XVI century). The monumental church building of Sant'Agostino's church, with the ancient former monastery of Augustinian friars, is not only the centre of important exhibitions, but also an intense activity congress in its Cultural Centre "Luigi Russo" that houses the local Library G. Carducci, the Centre for Studies of Historic and Contemporary Gardens and the "Museo dei Bozzetti". This very unusual museum means that Pietrasanta has become popular as an international reference point for people interested in sculpturing. The museum, born in 1984, gathers sketches, models and drawings of sculptures carried out by over 250 Italian and foreign artists who did or are still doing their work in one of the many artistic studios in Versilia. Some of the famous artists that we can find in this museum are: Adam, Bloc, Botero, Cascella, Cesar, Consagra, Finotti, Fonseca, Gilardi, Gilioli, Guadagnucci, Ipousteguy, Mitoraj, Murabito, Nivola, Noguci, Penalba, G. Pomodoro, Signori e L. Tommasi. How to get therePisa airport at 30 km (20 minutes by train)
