The South Island region
The Marlborough Sounds encompasses twenty percent of New Zealand's coastline and consists of three sounds - the Queen Charlotte Sound, the Keneperu Sound and the Perlorus Sound. The beautiful waters of Queen Charlotte Sound offer all kinds of water sports and activities. Explore the private bays and coves or spend time experiencing the natural shoreline. Launches, yachts, powerboats and sea kayaks can be chartered or hired and fishing, diving and scenic trips are available.
Blenheim, the closest city, is 20km from Picton and situated on the Wairau Plains. Blenheim is New Zealand’s largest planted area of grapes and definitely worth a trip to many of its wineries to sample award winning wines.
Travel down the east coast to Kaikoura. Whale watching tours dominate the local industry and in addition to whales you will see dolphins, albatross and seals. Kaikoura is also famous for its crayfish and sampling the fresh seafood is a must for any visitor.
Picton area
Tigers Den is located in Waikawa Bay just 2km from picturesque Picton situated at the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound. Picton is a popular tourism destination and is the gateway to the Marlborough Sounds. Nestled on an attractive foreshore, Picton offers enjoyable activities ranging from fishing, dolphin and seal watching to award winning Eco tours, mountain biking, kayaking and guided and freedom walks. Picton township offers a good selection of arts, crafts and souvenirs, waterfront cafes and superb restaurants.

Guestbook for Tigers Den
"Fantastic house - fantastic views, couldn't have been better. We were looking for a really special place to take my family who were on a holiday from the States & Tigers Den was absolutely perfect. Keith was really friendly, made the process of hiring the house smooth & easy, and he followed up with us after we arrived to make sure everything was ok, as well as straight after our stay. He said we would love the place & we did! Couldn't have asked for better service. The house is gorgeous -it's beautifully decorated, really comfortable & luxurious, heaps of room for all of us & the kids. It is one of those houses you walk into and it exceeds your expectations. Keith & Vanessa have thought of everything - bathrobes, all the cooking things you'd need, BBQ, spa pool, kayaks, even magazines to read. The views from house are absolutely stunning. We saw dolphins & seals in the bay from the balcony, which delighted the kids. Lots of walks & drives to go on in the area. We were hoping to find somewhere which would really showcase NZ for our family & Tigers Den was such a great place to have found. I would absolutely recommend it & I and look forward to returning!" Christina Hazard from Wellington, August 2009
"Absolutely stunning. This would have to be the best Holiday Home to rent in the region. From the minute you walk in you can tell this is a home of luxury, quality and class but at the same time very welcoming and comfortable. This home has everything in it you could possibly imagine to make your stay relaxing, enjoyable and one to remember. Sensational views overlooking the Marina and Marlborough Sounds just top it off. Whatever kept us occupied during the day whether it was Jet Skiing,Boating or a trip to one of the many vineyards, we couldn't wait to get back to enjoy the entertainment the home has to offer. My favourite being the spa with a good wine, awsome music playing, views to take your breath away and fantastic company. Would highly recommend you to enjoy and experience this first-class holiday home." Jill Ware from Christchurch, January 2009
"Simply the Best. Pam and I stayed at Tigers Den and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Setting and scenery world class. Why do we travel overseas when we have Tigers Den on our back Doorstep?" Topnotch from Pukekohe North Island, April 2008
"A luxurious house with great views from the hot-tub! We decided to treat ourselves to a stay here whilst on holiday in NZ after 5 weeks in a camper van and chose this luxury modern house in Picton overlooking the marina. No regrets at all. All mod cons provided in a large single storey property with a lovely long balcony in the shade along the length of one side and a hut-tub positioned on decking on the other. Plenty of room for a large family with at least 4 bedrooms. Master bedroom has spectacular views. Large well-stocked kitchen with choice of dining areas. Modern sound system and TV. Plenty of room for cars. Free use of broadband internet was also very welcome. Owner made us feel very welcome whilst respecting our privacy. Recommended good restaurant. Picton itself great for trips on the Sounds. Highly recommended if you can afford it." Tim Wales from Milton Keynes, UK, March 2008
"What a Break! Unrivalled views and great facilities....nothing wanting...everything you could want for a luxury holiday get-away venue?" Paul and Mands from Christchurch, January 2008
The hospitality provided to us at Tigersden exceeded every expectation.Keith Shadbolt proved an exceptional host, arranging charter vassel and two jetski rentals so our party could explore the beauty of marlborough sounds.Without reservation I would thoroughly recomend Tigerden. Thank you for a Christmas to remember. Nic Magdalinos 30/12/2008
"WOW what a wonderful place to stay and relax. An outstanding location with all the finer touches that you would expect and more. The whole family loved the weekend away. Well done Keith and Vanessa, we will be back again." Jason 15/05/2008
"Perfect holiday home, the pictures don’t do it justice. The location is fantastic; with a view we would never tire of. The owners are very welcoming and do everything to make the stay as enjoyable as possible; it was great to meet you Keith, thank you. We have already recommended you to folks back in the UK, in case they visit NZ and to relatives already living here. This is the best holiday home we have had the pleasure to stay in." Ian, Kathy, Abi & Bailey Wilcockson 30/12/2007
"Well what a holiday home, if you could call it that!! Absolute luxury at its finest. All you could ever want and then more. The most amazing views you could get anywhere, decor that is up with the latest trends and fashion, space, internet and computer facilities, indoor and outdoor living with balconies to die for. The sound system which is both inside and out and easy to use. A relaxing water feature as well as the view of the ferry’s coming in and out of the harbour. The bedrooms had all new bedding and the house was like brand new!! No matter what you want, a peaceful walk, fishing for the kids while you watch from the balcony, or a visit to the local restaurant and bar this home has access to it all. Would highly recommend a stay here and will be back again soon A++." Janine & Rick 15/10/2007
"Have you ever looked up at a property and wandered who lives up there, well we were lucky enough to be able to stay here for a week. This is truly the most amazing holiday house we have could ever have hoped to rent. The views are absolutely stunning overlooking the Waikawa marina. My husband spent a lot of time with binoculars observing action in the busy marina, just loved it. The house is real luxury, excellent kitchen, great comfortable beds, an amazing home entertainment system, very warm and spacious. We spent every evening sitting in the wonderful spa pool with wine and observed yachts racing past the interislander ferry. There was a nice bar and restaurant down at the marina, and some great walking tracks up in the bush. We will definitely come back here with a boat and explore the sounds."
