The Northern England / Yorkshire / Yorkshire region
Yorkshire and the surrounding region has much to offer. Some highlights include:
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway - the market town of Pickering is famous for its position on the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway. The line runs from Pickering to Whitby through some breathtaking scenery. Along the line is Goathland, known to Heartbeat fans as Aidensfield.
The Yorkshire Coastline - you can get to the East coast in a little over 30 mins from Wrelton. Scarborough is the largest resort, great for the kids to play on the beach and the amusements. Whitby, Staithes and Robin Hoods Bay are much smaller, more picturesque ports with lots of interesting buildings and landscapes to see
Flamingo Land - a 15min drive is the theme park Flamingo Land, 375 acres of fun-filled activities. This is one of the largest and most popular fun parks in the UK with more than 100 white-knuckle rides and slides a must for children and young at heart adults. The Zoo is home for over 1000 animals, including: flamingos, lions, zebras, sea lions, reptiles and the penguins. Many of the animals are endangered species threatened in the wild
Eden Camp - a fantastic place to see while you are in North Yorkshire, World War II and modern history museum, housed within the grounds of an original WWII POW Camp, a visit to this unique museum will take you back to wartime Britain. Experience the sights, sounds and even the smells of life on both the home front and the front line. Exciting, entertaining and educational.
York Minster - the largest Medieval Gothic Cathedral north of the Alps and a treasure house of 800 years of stained glass. Explore the history beneath your feet in the Undercroft and enjoy magnificent views from the tower top. Open daily subject to services.
Whitby - whitby is a small town of about 16,000 people situated on the northeast coast of England in the county of North Yorkshire. The old port town is clustered on the east side of the harbour at the mouth of the river and beneath the cliffs. Opposite the old town, on the West Cliff, is the later seaside resort developed in Victorian times.
Pickering area
There is something for everyone to do or see in North Yorkshire. Wrelton near Pickering is only a short drive from many top attractions, historic buildings, moorland and forest walks and the lovely beaches at Whitby, Scarborough and Filey. The compact village of Wrelton is by-passed by the main road (A 170) from Helmsley to Pickering. During the 1st century AD, a Roman road must have been built near here, leading to the Cawthorn Roman Camps which are located two miles to the north-north-east of the village. The earthworks of these camps have survived and are open to the public.
