The Central Thailand/Bangkok region

Most travellers see Phetchaburi (commonly known as Phetburi) as a hurried day trip from Bangkok (Phetchaburi is 90 mins south of Bangkok) or from the window of a southbound bus or train, but a more leisurely approach allows you to peel back the intriguing layers of Thai history.

Originally settled by the Khmer empire in the 11th century, the town was a 17th-century trading post on the way from Burma to Ayuthaya.

Trading brought wealth, still evident in the commanding array of crumbling wat (temples) lining Phetchaburi's waterfront.

Traditional Thailand can still be glimpsed in century-old teak houses and by sampling Phetchaburi's culinary heritage. When you've had your fill of the town's tasty desserts, climb to hilltop royal palaces or contemplate the Buddhist shrine in the cave sanctuary of Khao Luang.

Phetchaburi Town

Haad Chao Samran is the closest beach to Phetchaburi and enjoys immense popularity amongst the Thais.

Haad Chao Samran beach has loads of eateries and excellent seafood. There is also a beach wat, a police station and a few small supermarkets here.

For birdwatchers, try the expansive marshy land between Haad Puk Tian and Haad Chao Samran as well as Laem Phak Bia who takes its name from a 3 km 'sand-spit' that juts into the gulf. This natural land form is an ideal location for birds, mammals, reptiles and fish

From Baan Caruso you can enjoy a leisurely beach stroll to the mangrove and mudflaps and then on to the Laem Phak Bia sand spit to watch fishing boats enter the gulf, and to see an extensive variety of birds, animals and fish in their natural habitat.
