The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
The Languedoc-Roussillon region is one of France's best kept secrets. It has spectacular natural scenery, culture, history and exciting cities such as Montpelier and Nimes. The High Languedoc national park has breathtaking views of mountain gorges, caves, lakes, vineyards and slumbering ancient villages. A great place for kayaking and other exciting activities. The coastline has long sandy beaches and the climate is warm and dry with over 300 days of sunshine throughout the year.
Pezenas / Castelnau de Guers area
A few minutes walk from the villa is the charming 11th century fortified village of Castelnau de Guers. The local bar and shops are very friendly and helpful. To buy your morning baguettes follow the wonderful smell of fresh baking at the boulangerie. The local wine is very good and at a reasonable price. A shared "village secret" is to swim and fish in the nearby Herault river, a beautiful shady place on a hot day.
Pezenas (a five minute car ride ), once the capital of Languedoc, is well preserved and graced by grand renaissance architecture. Walk through the maze of narrow cobbled lanes and absorb the history spanning thousands of years. A lively wide square is the location of the very popular Saturday market, where one can sample some of the delicious local produce. During the summer months there are a variety of fetes and festivals to be enjoyed including theatre productions celebrating Moliere who produced plays here in the mid-seventeenth century.
Visit the old picturesque town of Beziers, best known for its wine, flower festivals and excellent shopping. The town has a strong Spanish influence, the border being only one hours drive. The Sigean safari park is half an hours drive from Beziers, a wonderful family day out. The charming fishing village of Bouzigues offers world famous sea food and every August hosts the Oyster Festival. Nearby, the port of Sete is a great setting for the age old water jousting held during the summer months. The Milau viaduct is well worth an hours drive for a spectacular experience. Sun-baked Mediterranean beaches are only a twenty minute drive. Cap d' Agde offers scuba diving, boat hire and other water sports including a large aqua park. Lively night life can be found here in the many bars and restaurants. Marseillan beach is a quieter choice, long sandy beaches stretch for miles. The charming little port of Marseillan is a good place to sample the local sea food whilst watching the boats. Carcassone a fantastic fortified city is one of Europe's greatest medieval castles is an hours drive. Skiing and winter sports are approximately 1-2hrs drive to the Pyrenees. Fort-Romeu, Capcir and Les Angles ski resorts are particularly popular with snow boarders. Camargue reserve is 80 kms away, well worth a day trip to see the famous white horses, black bulls and an amazing abundance of wild life. Locally, horse-riding, tennis, fishing and golf are available. Biking is a very popular way of exploring the area, cycle paths run alongside the Canal du Midi, where you can also enjoy a boat trip along the shaded tree lined waterway. Montpelier and Nimes are well worth a visit, the amphitheatre at NImes once the scene of gladiator combat 2000 years ago, is today still the venue for many functions including bull fighting.
