The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
The Languedoc Roussillon lies on the southern Mediterranean Coast of France and borders with Spain. The local diallect or language spoken is French but many can also speak Occitan, the language of the region before it became part of France.
The region is largest vineyard in the world with many household named appelations such as St Chinian, Minervois, Faugeres, etc and some excellent reds, superb rose wines and famous whites such as Limoux, a sparkling white older than Champagne in its origins. The region of course is also famous for its seafood and from Sete to Perpignan there are many excellent fish restaurants as well as local fish dishes.
The climate is hot and sunny for most of the year with a region having 300 days of sunshine per year. The temperatures in the summer can reach the mid 30's often, and spring and autumn sees temperatures in the 20's. Only at the end of December and January do temperatures occassionally reach zero overnight and hardly ever during the daytime. Normal temperatures in January are around the 12-15 degrees mark.
Pezenas town is of historical interest in itself however around and about there are many other places to visit with miles and miles of golden sandy beaches, some have no buildings on them whatsoever such as the sandspit between the inland sea basin famous for oysters at the Bassin de Thau and the Mediterranean. The fishing ports of Meze, Bouzigues(oysters) and Marseillan are very pretty places to visit. Inland there is the Cathar country with its history of the Abeissignan Crusades and Cathar Castles to explore before going up to Carcassone a complete restored historic walled city and world heritage site an hours motorway drive away. There is also the highest road bridge in the world on the motorway near Millau from Paris about an hour and a halfs drive.
The region is also full of remnants to the Romans and Greeks as can be seen at Agde, Nimes, Narbonne or at the Oppidum de Ensurene Museum just the other side of Beziers. Additianally the Canal du Midi crosses the Herault department and arrives at the Mediterranean Sea at Agde. There are also a wealth of events taking place locally both in the towns and villages.
For serious shopping visit Montpellier or Beziers. Montpellier has a significant student and young feel to it as well as a fantastically well preserved Roman centre. It is also famous for its culture in terms of Music and the Arts. Beziers to has much to offer from the Feria in Mid August when it feels like most of Spain comes to town for the week for the bullfighting, horseshows, flamenco dancing and fetes in the town. There is also every Friday bar Feria week an amazing flower market which covers the Allees in Central Beziers from one end to the other in spectacular colours. The town has a wide selection of shops and restaurants as well as some stunning views from the Cathedral plateau in front of St Nazaire.
Pezenas area
Back in the 1600's Moliere and his acting troupe came to the town to entertain the local dignataries and people. Moliere became synonymous with Pezenas and to this day his presence over many years can be seen in the large important houses with their inner courtyards with multiple balconies when of course public access is allowed. The tourisme office in the Place Gambetto, in the centre of the old cobbled streets of Pezenas will happily provide you with many more details. Every Saturday morning there is a huge market in the Cours Jean Jaures the wide boulevard in the centre of Pezenas selling everything from clothes to oysters, and often the time when many locals come out to socialize on a weekly basis. Nearer Xmas this turns into the daily Xmas Market, with many views of Santa Claus often seen trying to scramble up a rope or over a roof top to someones bedroom!! Restaurants include Les Maronniers, 0467 90 13 80 on the main street into Pezenas amongst the antique shops but book, Apres le Deluge 04 67 90 29 26 a tiny restaurant outside but huge inside. Outside is better. Le Poisson Verre 04 67 98 25 11 in the main cobbled square or also our favourite La Terrace also in the Place Gambetta 0467 98 25 11 - but don't tell them its your birthday or you are liable to have an improptu rendition by a made up choir!!!

Guestbook
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Le Coteau Moliere and have returned every year. It makes an ideal base to stay in this beautiful part of France and has everything as well as being close to Pezenas and the Mediterranean beaches.- The Clarke family.
The villa provided is with a great place to relax and everyone was very friendly. It was easy to get into Pezenas. We hardly used the car except for trips to the supermarket. - Lynn and David Briffett and family
