The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region

The Languedoc is the genuine south of France, set between sea and mountain with 300 plus days of sunshine. Within the Languedoc, Alignan is in the midst of the Herault, the most prolific wine producing region in France. Alignan is surrounded by vines, and in the autumn the golds and reds of the vineyards are spectacular. There is something in every direction: head south for the continuous beaches of the Mediterranean, head north to the dramatic Haut Languedoc National Park.
Fascinating cities to explore: Pezenas, Agde, Sete, Beziers (fiesta in August), Carcassonne La Cite and Montpellier. If you love history there is plenty to absorb you. As one of the crossroads of civilisation there is something of historical interest everywhere. The Languedoc is part of Cathar Country, and there are many spots of interest related to them; you do not have to be a fan of the ‘Da Vinci Code’ to enjoy seeing Rennes-le-Chateau, little more than an hour away.Rent a boat on the Canal du Midi, built in the 17th century to connect Sete, on the Mediterranean with Toulouse on the Atlantic.
The Pyrenees, with hiking and skiing are two hours away, Toulouse two and half hours away, and Barcelona three hours.
The Pezenas / Alignan du Vent area
Alignan du Vent is a delightful wine producing village of about 1500 people. It is one of the circulade villages, and our townhouse is set on the wide outer road of the circulade. A great position from which to explore the vineyards of the area. A few steps from the house is the centre of the village with its shops; there is a twice weekly market. In high summer there is an open air swimming pool.
Little more than 5 minutes away is the delightful Pezenas with its many craft and art shops, antique retailers, cafe-bars and restaurants. Pezenas is a medieval jewel worthy of its stage-set use. It has 70 plus listed buildings some dating from the renaissance. Moliere was known to have spent time here. From mid-June through September it is the venue for the festivals, concerts and exhibitions called the Mirondela dels Arts. It is also home to a large outdoor market on Saturdays.

The house has been well restored and has a beautiful staircase, local history shows it was purchased from someone who still lives nearby and the village definitely feels neighbourly and cared for. There's a great village atmosphere, everyone is friendly and lots of good local producers. Bakery fab! Margaret was generous with instructions/guides and everything was arranged perfectly. The house is very clean and well equipped; we had use of all beach stuff, games books and CDs - not a bad selection -everything I've ever needed on holiday was there in fact. It is a perfect walking destination or base to explore Languedoc, the open sandy beaches or to poodle around antique markets in Pezenas. Sea food and oysters cheap and plentiful - missing lunch is almost impossible! I would definitely go back. |

Thank you for the house we had a fabulous time and loved your home and the village-it is a vibrant and welcoming place and we quickly made contacts in and around the area. Some of the thing we really appreciated about your house:

- The access to everything we needed for the beach
- The tasteful furnishing in keeping with the era of the house
- The numberous fans
- Having access to internet
- The area has so much to offer and so close to the best beaches
-The village square and the small bar where we spent some great eveings. LF, Australia
We want you to know how much we love your house here in Alignan! It has truly been everything we had hoped it would be. We can see what would have drawn you to this area. The Stairs are amazing - the pictures of them don't do them justice. We will miss them. . .Susan (Canada)
