Enquire nowThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
The Languedoc Roussillon lies on the southern Mediterranean Coast of France and borders with Spain. The local dialect or language spoken is French but many can also speak Occitan, the language of the region before it became part of France.
The region is largest vineyard in the world with many household named appellations such as St Chinian, Minervois, Faugeres, etc and some excellent reds, superb rose wines and famous whites such as Limoux, a sparkling white older than Champagne in its origins. The region of course is also famous for its seafood and from Sete to Perpignan there are many excellent fish restaurants as well as local fish dishes.
The climate is hot and sunny for most of the year with a region having 300 days of sunshine per year. The temperatures in the summer can reach the mid 30's often, and spring and autumn sees temperatures in the 20's. Only at the end of December and January do temperatures occasionally reach zero overnight and hardly ever during the daytime. Normal temperatures in January are around the 12-15 degrees mark.
The Pezenas area
Pezenas town is of historical interest in itself being the place Moliere (the French equivalent of Shakespeare) adopted as his home. Around and about there are many other places to visit with miles and miles of golden sandy beaches, some have no buildings on them whatsoever such as the sandspit between the inland sea basin famous for oysters at the Bassin de Thau and the Mediterranean.
The fishing ports of Meze, Bouzigues(oysters) and Marseillan are very pretty places to visit. Inland there is the Cathar country with its history of the Abeissignan Crusades and Cathar Castles to explore before going up to Carcassone a complete restored historic walled city and world heritage site an hours motorway drive away. There is also the highest road bridge in the world on the motorway near Millau from Paris about an hour and a halfs drive.
The region is also full of remnants to the Romans and Greeks as can be seen at Agde, Nimes, Narbonne or at the Oppidum de Ensurene Museum just the other side of Beziers. Additionally the Canal du Midi crosses the Herault department and arrives at the Mediterranean Sea at Agde. There are also a wealth of events taking place locally both in the towns and villages.
For serious shopping visit Montpellier or Beziers. Montpellier has a significant student and young feel to it as well as a fantastically well preserved Roman centre. It is also famous for its culture in terms of Music and the Arts. Beziers to has much to offer from the Feria in Mid August when it feels like most of Spain comes to town for the week for the bullfighting, horseshows, flamenco dancing and fetes in the town. There is also every Friday bar Feria week an amazing flower market which covers the Allees in Central Beziers from one end to the other in spectacular colours. The town has a wide selection of shops and restaurants as well as some stunning views from the Cathedral plateau in front of St Nazaire.
