The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Languedoc-Roussillon in south-west France curves around a corner of the Mediterranean, from Provence in the east down to the borders with Spain and Andorra in the south. north-eastern Spain.

300 days of sunshine a year and a Mediterranean climate are the main attractions of this friendly region easily accessible by plane (AIRPORT in MONTPELLIER, BEZIES, CARCASSONE) train (TGV STATION in AGDE BEZIES MONTPELLIER from ROISSY ) or car (MOTORWAY A 9 ET A 75 from PARIS, LYON or BARCELONE)

Is a region of contrasts :

The landscape flattens around the tranquil Canal Du Midi, which cuts across the region's middle with Agde,Béziers, Carcassonne, a world heritage site, at its centre. South of the canal gentle rolling foothills start to ascend, climbing to the dramatic peaks of the Pyrennees.

The long sandy beaches where they have developed famous Resorts: Cap d’Agde, Grande Motte, Serignan,….

The coastline of Lower-Languedoc is cut off from the hinterland by marshy étangs (lagoons), which have prevented the same sort of furious development that has blighted the Cote d'Azur and the Spanish Costas and and have promoted the development of picturesque ports such : Sète, Bouzigues, Marseillan famous for their oysters and mussels.

The wine has been cultivated her since Antiquity, the vineyards has shaped the landscape and the people of this country very attached to their culture, the region is know for its hearty reds, fruity rosés

There are many historical sites to visit such as the city of PEZENAS :magnificent courtyards of historical houses, antiques and home décor shops, Antics Abbeys as VALMAGNE, Castle as CASSAN or spectacular medieval area as ST GUILHEM LE DESERT where many musical concerts are held.

Chateau d’Hortes is surrounded by vineyards (the area has been a winery) and the owner can arrange private tours of vineyards and cellars.

Every Sunday a large and famous handicraft market is held in the square and on the high street of the town.

About 10 mn drive away is the historical city of Pezenas, the town where Moliere found success. You can visit many sights: the old town with medieval burger-houses and town mansions of the 17th and 18th Centuries; collegial cloistered church St-Jean and a lot of museums. But also taste wine each Friday evening, listen to music concerts, and plays at the theatre, discover the artists' shops (engravers, bookbinders, painters, etc.). Pezenas nightlife comes alive on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Many long and sandy beaches of the Languedoc région are within an easy 15 minutes drive, e.g. the famous sea resort of Cap d'Agde where there are a lot of water activities (sailing, surfing, scuba diving).

Enjoy the famous Aqualand Park (the most popular aquatic park of UE) and choose from many fine beach restaurants.

Or drive along the coast until the "Etang de Thau", stop to explore the charming and typical ports Marseillan or Bouzigues to taste oysters and mussels with a fruity chilled rosé wine

You'll be choosing a lot of places to visit: the Medieval hamlet of "St Guilhem le Deserts is one hour’s drive, with its Music Festival; the spectacular limestone caves "Grotte de Clamouse"; the city of Carcassonne less than an hour away; the animal sanctuary Sigean; or the Canal du Midi and its famous locks (Béziers 20 minutes away) that you can explore on foot or by renting a boat for the day (within 10 minutes from home). Montpellier and the Musée Fabre is less than one hour from home.

"Wonderful stay at Château d'Hortes!"

We enjoyed a very happy time at Château d'Hortes, which is a beautiful, elegant and characterful property, perfect for families. There is an elegant, lovely garden, fantastic & large swimming pool, and the owner was very friendly and welcoming.

The area does not have such great tourist guides available, since they miss many interesting and historic villages that are quite close by, so do some exploring.

The best town to visit is nearby Pézanas - historic and with lots to see. There is a tourist office here, which is helpful, and parking is easy on the edge of the medieval centre. Approach by car following signs to Pézanas Sud...not 'Centre Ville' - this way you'll get to the car park at Place 14 Juillet by Ave Francois Hue.

Other good places to see:
Abbaye de Valmagne - vinyard and old abbaye
Nézignan-l'Évêque - don't miss the historic church
Marseillan - by the sea & Thau lagoon; good resturants.
Saint-Thibéry - very close to Bessan
Carcassonne - can't be missed, but stuffed full of tourists
Generally, head north and you'll see the high Languedoc and the mountains that are very different from the area around Bessan and down to the sea.

In Bessan:
- visit the wine co-operative (Rose de Bessan)
- the best Boulangerie is on the south side of Grande Rue, off Place de la Fontaine (heading towards Pl. de la Mairie).
- the Sunday food market is fantastic!

Getting to the Château - if your satnav tries taking you through behind the Intermarche...stop! That takes you off-road into huge pot-hole territory! Instead, approach via Boulevard Jean Moulin to Chemin d'Hortes.

Its all very convenient to reach from Montpellier or Bezier airports.

I'd highly recommend Château d'Hortes for a restful family stay. To be honest, once you've arrived, you won't want to go elsewhere but enjoy just being at such a lovely place.
