The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The coastal plain of the department Hérault enjoys a micro-climate of mainly sunshine and clear blue skies. In this the vineyards on the plain, and gentle slopes where Gabian lies, have flourished, offering visitors ample choice to enjoy degustations at the many local wine domains.
Flowing through the region are the rivers Orb and Hérault, dotted with many opportunities for canoeing and kayaking through the gorges, bathing from the river beaches and for fishing. The beaches of Languedoc stretch from the Camargue nature reserve almost continuously to Perpignan, easy to find your spot for sunbathing and, for the young at heart, lively water sports. Some coastal town such as Marseillan, Cap d'Agde, Vias and Valras also have amusement and adventure parks. For the nature lovers, a very short drive inland leads amongst the beauty of the Espinouse mountains with clearly marked walks and rambles and on upwards for more strenuous climbs. For those golf lovers the nearest golf course is at Lamalou les Bains, a very picturesque setting in the Orb valley and with a good restaurant. After that turn towards the coast and 40 minutes drive takes you to either Golf du Cap d'Agde or, Golf de Saint Thomas, on the route toward Beziers.
Gabian is a medieval village with a wealth of French village life, character and history. Take a walk through the narrow streets to the river Thongue to feed the ducks and spot the coypu gliding through the water.
In splendid view across the valley from the Villa is the majestic Chateau Cassan. Here fresh bread can be bought straight from the kitchen ovens and excellent wines from its own vineyards. There is a small gift shop leading through into the Chateau courtyard, stone passageways and ancient chapel. Well worth a visit.
Although small, Gabian does have its commerces including a couple of boulangeries / bakeries, pharmacy, small grocery shop/newsagent and a bar/cafe also serving meals. There is a small weekly market in the main square. Nearby Roujan offers a wider variety of commerces and eating places and the nearest large supermarket but for more serious shopping, a little further on is Pézenas with a choice of large supermarkets plus a maze of medieval cobbled streets full of boutiques, artist studios and antique shops. During summer there are lively 'Nocturne' evenings on Wednesday and Fridays when the streets teem with life.
