Further details indoors

Some of our bedrooms hold a family by virtue of there being bunk-beds in addition to the normal double bed, or pair of singles. There are 6 toilets in all as well as 3 baths, all with showers too, and 3 separate showers as well. Towels cost extra, and there is a small charge for groups above 12 people (due to linen etc).

Further details outdoors

The pool and lily pond are kept separate by a nice unobtrusive barrier (that can easily be removed by adults), and the lower garden has a number of trees in it, including a very old olive, and an old but very fruitful fig tree, as well as cherries, apples, nectarines and peaches.

Lots of grapes around too. We now have 3 swinging garden chairs in a nice space between the trees that makes an excellent area to sit in the evenings - or otherwise. Swings, slide and sandpit for the kids too.

Further details

Groups above 12 pay a small supplement, and towels are extra, as is electricity above a reasonable allowance of 50 units per week, and gas is charged, but like extra electricity, only at cost price. In winter, all energy is charged for, and that includes logs for the fire.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Pezenas is in a small area with about 300 blue sky days a year, and is famous because it is the town of Moliere, is very old, and has a splendid old quarter (just a few steps from the house). Many artists have their studios and galleries here, and the town is amazingly active in putting on events and attractions from the past, with sword fights, music, food festivals, antique bazaars, ballads and fireworks to name just a few. It has a large and colourful Saturday market, and in summer, the many little shops in the maze of alleys in the old quarter stay open till midnight during the 'nocturnes'.

There are nearly 40 restaurants to choose from, all nearby. The tourist office is 1 minute from our house, is excellent, and their guided tour reveals many amazing buildings. All around Pezenas are famous vineyards, such as those of Faugeres, Corbieres and PicPoul, which you can visit. Pezenas is also home to world famous climber Alain Robert (Spiderman), who climbs the worlds highest buildings - he is often around in the bars and is very friendly.

Pezenas

Flamingoes are about 20 mins away, as is Meze, our favourite beach and fishing village. Carcassonne is under an hour and St Guilhem le Desert and Gorge Heric are 40 mins by car (all must see's). The landscape around Pezenas is varied and beautiful, with dozens of lovely villages, and lots of famous wine domains to visit along with the usual chateaux and abbeys, and a famous award winning garden, owned by a couple from the UK, is a mere 20 mins away.

Montpellier is a brilliant city to shop and eat in, and has a fantastic aquarium nearby, with several water parks between it and Beziers. Sete and Agde are world famous beach and seaside resorts, and both are only 35 mins away from Pezenas.

"We enjoyed our stay at Maison Alaric - and were sorry to leave"

We enjoyed our stay at Maison Alaric. We had plenty of contact with Alaric before our arrival and he provided us with the 'Book of the House' which covered every detail of the letting from plumbing to WiFi and also included items of interest about the surrounding area. By the time we arrived we felt we knew everything there was to know.

It is a great house and can accommodate large groups or smaller. We varied between 16 and 9 (our core group) and we were all very comfortable and didn't feel we filled the house at any time!

The kitchen is wonderful and if we were 'at home' we spent most of our evenings there though we did use the upstairs drawing/dining room once for a birthday celebration. Because we were there in September we didn't spend our evenings on the terrace but I imagine that would be pleasant in the summer.

The bedrooms are comfortable and there are plenty of bathrooms etc. The pool and terrace area are great and the garden secluded so although the house is virtually in the centre of town it was actually very quiet. (We were never actually quiet ourselves as we had 4 children with us all the time and for one week 8).

Regarding people with disabilites - it would depend on the disability and the ability to negotiate stairs. Not all of us were young and fit, though. Our oldest person was 87 and used a stick - he had no problems.

The Gardien responded quickly to any queries and he was a great help, especially as we didn't all speak good French.

As we come from Australia and old is not really old in terms of buildings we spent much of our time wandering round Pèzenas looking at the fascinating old streets and alleyways. We also loved the bakeries and delicious baguettes and croissants - the local wine went down very well, too. We felt there was a very friendly atmosphere in the town.

The area is in close proximity to many places of interest so it's a good hub if you don't want to just 'hang out' in Pèzenas. Car parking is provided on the property for two cars and the public car park at the rear was very safe and there was always space.

We can whole heartedly recommend the house (and Pèzenas) it was a most enjoyable place in which to spend 4 weeks – in fact we were sad to leave.

"Not what you expect - the pictures are very outdated - in need of some up grading for the price"

Stayed for a couple weeks and this property is in a great spot just a pity it doesn't live up to the pictures. They show the best bathroom the rest are ok and some in need of tlc as does the deco… More

Being rather large and 300 years old, it is not always easy to keep up every bit of decor new and gleaming we agree, though guests are often astonished when they learn its age, as the interior is both modern and largely new. But two of our bathrooms (out of 6) are not up to the standard of the others it is true, but they are extras anyway, and even they are going to be revamped soon. Our other four bathrooms however are excellent. Also, we were very puzzled indeed by the idea that the photos are outdated - it is true that the garden has grown, as gardens do, and that our shots were from when it was fairly in its infancy, but actually it is nicer now so... but the shots inside are spot on, and recent where changes have been made. Puzzled also that they didn't give us the full five stars as their response whenever we called was nothing less than ecstatic. But they did break a few things, which we had to fix, and they were very cross about having to pay for that despite my having got the damage fixed for peanuts, so maybe the answer lies there?

"This house is a magical place, the setting for a dream vacation"

We stayed in this house for 3 weeks with a big group of extended family, including 7 children ages ranging from 4 to 12. The house is a kid's paradise, with the pool, yard, ping pong table and lots of space for them to play. Also, it is a less than 5 minute walk to the center of the old town, so the older kids had the freedom to walk into the old city and roam around in a group on their own. The house never felt crowded, it almost felt as if each family (there were four) had their own 'wing' of the house, and the kitchen and eating areas were spacious and well equipped and easily accommodated everybody. The house felt both grand and comfortable at the same time.

"A great big house in a lovely town - perfect for a large family group"

We stayed in Maison Alaric for 3 weeks in June 2012. There were 15 of us - 8 adults and 7 children ranging in age from 3 to 13 - all Canadians. We didn't begin to fill the place. Every couple had their own separate area in the home. The children were enchanted by the whole place.

The central focus of the house was the kitchen, patio and pool area. The kitchen was huge - a big table with 2 stoves, a large refrigerator, lots of plates, cutlery, pots, pans, and gadgets. Many chefs worked at the same time. The patio outside the kitchen was under cover from the sun or rain, and had 2 big tables and enough chairs to seat us all for the nightly family dinners that were the highlight of the visit. There was also a ping pong table on another part of the patio that got a lot of use. The pool, where the children spent a great deal of time, is immediately adjacent, and is both well fenced and easily available. There was a small playground and orchard on the property. Parking was amazing. There is room for 2 cars in the back of the property plus a huge free parking lot right outside the back gate - we had 4 cars and no problems.

The old town of Pezenas, which is a minute's walk away, had all the charm an adult or child could want. The children were able to go into town by themselves, and soon were experts on the place. There was a number of good restaurants, and a few tourist traps. There was a Lidl and a Carrifour in town, plus many smaller shops. The surrounding area had lots of interesting things to do, with the children particularly enjoying the forest adventure near Montagnac.

The house was very easy to live in, as it was simply furnished, and had little for the children to worry about breaking. Alaric, the owner, is a great character, and was very willing to help in any way. We had a wonderful time, and hope to return again some day!

"Beautiful holiday property with some surprises"

We stayed at this large and delightful property with two other families in August 2011. This house is very spacious, with a charming pool area, with outside dining and back yard area. It is located ve… More

Here is an exact quote of the email the families sent me after their stay: 'being perfectly honest, you have a lovely property, in a fine location, and a good time was had by everyone. We will have good memories of our time there.' And this was despite the presence of the gardien (which some people really approved of, but they hated). And guess what. He has now gone. Which is our response. Also, we have dramatically improved the available bedrooms as well, just for good measure. And we have now won the coveted 5 star award from the French Tourist Office. So come and see, and return home with even better memories, because the above quote from our reviewer is spot on.
