Enquire nowThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
The Langeudoc is "the other south of France" which is hotter, undiscovered and more diverse than Provence. It offers white sandy beaches, vines, and to the rear, mountains, in an area sun drenched in history and warmth. Cathar castles to the west including Carcassonne make a perfect day trip. The Gorge de Herault has white water rafting, canoeing, with sandy beaches and river swimming.
Sea food along the coast, boasts to be the best in France. Waterside restaurants serving "home grown" oysters, muscles and shell fish can be found in abundance at Meze, Boiuziques and Sete. Washed down with a light local wine Picpoul de Pinet.
The Pezenas / Saint-Pons-de-Mauchiens area
St. Pons de Mauchiens is full of history. You can walk through the ramparts and be transported to the time of Joan of Arc. The village festivals celebrate the "bad dog" that the village is named after (it's a bonus to coincide your stay with one of them)It also has the more modern facilities of a shop, for that all important baguette in the morning and a bar for the cool beer in the evening. There are tennis courts in the village and cricket in the sunshine of the Mairie gardens on Sunday afternoons.
Pezenas is the local town 10 minutes away and is famous for Moliere, the playwright, one of its most famous inhabitants during the 1650's. The tiny 11th century streets are full of antique dealers, restaurants and shops and in the warm balmy evenings is the perfect setting for entertainment and mouth watering dining.
Cap d'Agde has plenty of nightlife and Aqualand which is a wonderful day out for the children (www.aqualand.fr)
The beaches range from wild and rustic Marseillan, exciting full of fun Cap D'Agde to the thrilling escapades of Jousting in Sete and Meze. Palavas Les Flots has a quite unique chair-o-plane to get over the river. With pink flamingos nearby it is a beautiful spectacle.
If you fancy a 20 minute trip inland, head for St.Guilhem-le-Desert for magnificent white water rafting and river swimming with its own beach and clear water.
Monpellier and Bezier both offer "Cosmopolitan City Life" with designer shops and restaurants.
There are local festivals all over the region throughout the Spring and Summer

With the boys aged 17 and 13 this villa provides the ideal family base for either a leisurely holiday in the pool or as a base for the various attractions in the Languadoc, or as we did, both. We flew into Montpellier with Easyjet and used a hire car (virtually essential). Transfer time to the villa is about 50 mins. Bridget made us welcome on arrival and provided fresh milk in the fridge and a bottle of wine. With masses of space in the villa there is room to spread out with the two bathrooms, large lounge and dining area. We planned our trips using the internet and kept up with the UK news on Sat TV. We ate on the veranda every day with lovely views over the countryside. The boys loved the pool and spent hours in it every day. A walk through Pons St Mauchiens in the evening with its ancient streets provided good photo opportunities. Pezenas became the default shopping location with both small independent shops in the ancient streets of the old town and a couple of big stores on the main road. We visited the ancient walled town of Carcassonne which is 90 mins away on the toll motorway and well worth a visit, going later in the day meant easier parking nearby. We also visited Valras Plage, which has a lovely sandy beach, pretty touristy but just the job for older 'children' providing plenty of eating places, windsurfer hire etc. There are, of course, many beaches to choose from. Lovely villa, lovely holiday. |
