The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
Languedoc-Roussillon only came under French royal control after a bloody struggle to subdue the region in the thirteenth century. But even now it retains it's own distinct identity and is as much influenced by its proximity to Spain as it is by the dictates of Paris.
Nestling at the foot of the Pyrenees the region sweeps in a grand curve around the Mediterranean and extends inland as far as Toulouse and the Gavronne. The sunniest area in France, the region is blessed with approximately 300 days of sunshine per year and is renowned for its natural beauty, places of historic interest and exceptional local wines, many of which can be sampled at local caveaux.
L'Hérault department, has the ancient city of Béziers at its centre and a surrounding hinterland which ranges from the pristine beaches of the Mediterranean to the Upper Languedoc National Park with its unspoilt mountains, cliffs, waterfalls, rivers and the beautiful Lac du Salagou, registered historic villages, and a wide variety of artistic and cultural attractions.
Pezenas / Castelnau de Guers area
Castelnau de Guers, an 11th century fortified village is ideally placed for exploring the Mediterranean coast, the villages and towns of Hérault and the wooded mountains, lakes and rivers of the Haut Languedoc National Park. Within 14 kms you can swim in the Med and sunbathe on long sandy beaches, visit historical chateaux and villages or shop at local markets. The restaurants in the area are renowned for their seafood with one of the main oyster producing centres (Bouzigues) only 20 minutes away. You could also visit the local vineyards. Faugères, Saint Chinian, Minervois and Listel are a few of the appellations whose vineyards are within easy reach. For guests interested in golf there are many links in the area.
“Le Pavillon” your home in Castelnau-de-Guers lies within the scenic and ancient wine region of Languedoc-Roussillon. Nestled among the vineyards just a short walk from the village pastry shop, the butcher, the post office and the general store. The village church and the village square are at the top of the road. Most important is the village wine cooperative, just down the hill, where you may purchase locally produced wines at favourable prices. The climate is warm and dry with over 300 days of sunshine throughout the year. There are some easy to find attractive walks from the house into the local countryside along its flower-covered hills with their fragrant herbs and abundant bird-life. Spring is a good time to visit with many species of orchids in flower. The village has a large pétanque court where you can join the locals in a game.
Pézenas market, held every Saturday, is one of the biggest and best street markets to be found in Southern France. The displays of flowers, fruit and vegetables, local produce, souvenirs, clothes and general goods stretch the whole length of the main street. There are markets almost every day and many evenings at local ports and towns, during the Summer months selling a wide variety of local produce and crafts. There is an open-air swimming pool in Pézenas and another 20 minutes away at Besilles country and leisure park, which also has tennis courts and a rope assault course. The Hérault river, which takes its source in the Cévennes, at the foot of the Aigoual mount, throws itself into the Mediterranean at Agde, passing Pézenas en route. Up-river the valley provides the explorer with wonderful limestone gorges, caves and cliffs. Canoes and kayaks can be hired on the river. (see separate sheet). Attractive local villages include Montagnac, Pinet and St. Pargoire. The port of Mèze, on the Étang de Thau, is just over 10 Kms
Bouzigues, famous for its oysters and its oyster festival in August, is well worth a visit. A thirty-minute journey inland brings you to the picturesque Lac du Salagou, near Clermont l'Hérault, where there are a number of small lakeside beaches surrounded by impressive hills of stunning red earth.
You could visit the ancient windmills at Faugères or the Mediterranean coast at Marsellan-Plage or Sète, or scuba-dive at Cap d’Agde. For wine lovers, Béziers, the principal centre of the Languedoc wine industry, is worth visiting with its wide range of shops - about half an hour’s drive away.
The city of Montpellier, the capital of Hérault, is 50 Kms (less than an hour by car). This very attractive and elegant city has several museums and parks.
The stunningly beautiful Haut Languedoc National Park is 40 Kms to the Northwest. There are thirty-one marked, both shorter and more demanding walks and many breathtaking views. Limestone gorges, cliffs and caves add to the delight of the area, where the air is warm and sunny, and shares much in common with the climate and scenery of Provence, without the crowds.
Try the Gorges d'Heric, the village of Roquebrun and The wooded mountains of l'Espinouse to get a flavour of the area.
The Orb river winds its way through the Hérault vineyards, and on the first ranges of mountains of the Espinouse mountains. On a bright day, the view stretches as far as the Cévennes. Take a canoe trip through the spectacular mountain gorges of the River Orb.
For birdwatchers, the internationally important reserve of the Camargue is 80 Kms away. The pink Flamingoes, white horses and black bulls of the Camargue make for an unforgettable experience.
For a great day out visit the Sigean Safari Park with 350 animals

I really can't go on enough about how lovely the place is, but I can suggest some places to visit .......
We have had a great time, hope you do too!
A & J - Bristol
October 2004
This house is a wonderful village "haven" and we found the locals very welcoming and helpful......
This holiday has been a different experience for us - one where we sampled the true French way of life - it has been thoroughly enjoyable. The weather has been fantastic!
B & D - Yorkshire
October 2004
We spent a wonderful week at Le Pavillon, just relaxing in the house and strolling around the village is a lovely way to pass the time, but also enjoyed our visits to Pézenas (Saturday morning market, people watching over coffee in the Café des Arts, eating at La Pomme D'Amour), to Motpellier..........
The people in the village have been extremely friendly and everyone greets you with a 'bonjour'. We spent and idyllic afternoon cycling along past vineyards before picnic-ing by the river watching kingfishers swoop, and fish (salmon? trout?) jump, listening to the rushing water with not a soul around.
J & A - Kent
June 2005
We've had a great few days here.............
Could do with some more time to keep exploring, but alas, home calls!

Thank you very much for a lovely break........

April 2005
Everyone was so friendly in the village - we had no language problems whatsoever. I'm OK at spoken french and Sue was very good at understanding so we certainly complemented one another on that score! We had great fun starting every sentance with "Je parle le francais juste un peu"!
The boys were exceptionally good and we took them to the beach at Agde..........
We went into Pézenas and Béziers and also visited the caves at Grotte de Labeil where we were treated like VIPs because it had only just opened for the season and we were the first visitors. The boys were fascinated by the stalagmites & Stalagtites and a good time was had by all.
We also went to "Origines et évolution de L'homme" at Meze - that was great too..............
M & S - East Sussex

"The house was all we had wished for and more ................. We will be recommending it to our friends." GS - Canada
July - August 2006 We are 2 families for this stay, ranging from 7 - 50(ish).
Most of the entries preceding ours say it all, I just wanted to add to the general sentiments that it's a lovely place to stay, both Le Pavillon and the village, with plenty to do nearby and less near. The best swimming was in L'Herault down the hill or as we came to prefer, by the bridge going out of the village on the Pezenas road.

April 2007 'Le Pavillon' has been above all the multitude of experiences, visits, wines, meals, markets and all else - a truly authentic French experience. Contrasted starkly with the hustle, tourist traps of Nice and the Cote d'Azur, this well-maintained and serviced 15th century house has all the charms and intrigue of the stereotypical English dream of the South of France - the vineyard covered countryside, the smell of fresh croissant in the mornings.
I find it beautifully charming - the living in a Monet painting, everything I could want from a holiday.......
W & A (Avon)
April 2007 We are 2 families from Canada, 4 adults & 4 teens aged 13 - 16. We used this beautiful house as a living base, leaving every morning and returning at night.
With rental cars from Beziers we travelled to Pezenas, the beach at Cap d'Agde, to Nimes amphitheatre and the temple, then on to the aqueduct at Pont du Gard etc. etc.........................
We feel blessed to have found this wonderful house. We slept well here.We must return, our first trip to France has us dreaming about when we could return.
P&K, M&C, S&A, A&R (Canada)
June 2007 We have been here for a week - one of our nicest holidays.
We have enjoyed a relaxing time in this lovely house and visited many local places including: Pezenas with its colourful Saturday market, and numerous antique shops, played Golf at Cap d'Agde, swam in the Mediterranean at Cap d'Agde, where we also dined on lobsters in the Beach Bar/Restaurant there.
We swam and canoed in Lac de Salagou, walked through the vineyards from the village to the Hérault , enjoyed local wine-tasting at Mas St Antoine, visited the ports at Marseillan and Meze and had a spectaclar meal of the local Oysters and shellfish in a roof-top restaurant (Grand Bleu) in Bouzigues ................
P & M (Norway)
September 2007 What a lovely few days we have had here at 'Le Pavillon':
beautiful wine, beautiful village, beautiful scenery, beautiful swimming,We splashed in the river, lake and sea!
We were introduced to sailing on the lake (Salagou) which was a new experience for us and one which we thoroughly enjoyed.
We will be back to explore further and enjoy the rustic charm.
L & T (Kent)
August 2007 Arrived by Taxi from Montpelier Gare and managed our entire holiday without a car.
Enjoyed local bus rides to Pezenas and Grau d'Agde, subathed in Med. at 30+C - fantastic!
Home is beautiful, people friendly. What better way to relax than by the river with a makeshift fishing-rod.
With 2 family members that have never been outside the UK before - what better way to spend your 71st birthday!
Great time had by all!
S,F,J & S (Kent)
August 2008 Many thanks for the stay at your pavilion. We had a great time in your French retreat, which is really perfectly situated.
I had forgotten quite how much the area had to offer and we are planning to go over again next year.
