The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Vézère Valley in the Dordogne is a beautiful and unspoilt part of France and offers lovely countryside for walking, cycling, canoeing and horse riding as well as opportunities to relax, eat and drink. The villages on the Vézère each hold their own fete, during the summer, which culminates in a lavish firework display. The lovely old town of Montignac holds its own music festival each summer playing host to music and dance groups from across the world. In addition there are often concerts in local village churches. You can find a market somewhere in one of the local villages or in the larger towns of Sarlat and Montignac pretty much any day of the week.

Places of Interest:

• La Roque St Christophe is one of many historical sites from pre-historic times located in the area; it is just a short walk from Le Sol, about 1.5km away. The 1km long caves were first inhabited 55,000 years ago

• The town of Montignac is approximately 15km from the gite. There are plenty of riverside cafes, shops & a large supermarket just outside the town. Tickets for Lascaux can be bought in Montignac.

• The beautiful medieval town of Sarlat is about a forty minute drive away and has an all day market every Wednesday and Saturday.

• Maison Forte De Reignac (inhabited from prehistoric times up to the 19th century) is approximately a 10 minute drive from the town of Les Eyzies where the region's new and impressive museum is located.

• In Le Bugue a short drive in the direction of Les Eyzies there is an aquarium and a glass blower.

• There is go-karting a 30 minute drive from the house in the direction of Perigueux.

Peyzac Le Moustier

Le Moustier is a tiny village in the Vézère Valley in the Dordogne, one of the most beautiful areas of France and famous for its lovely villages, castles and sites of great antiquity; the famous cave paintings at Lascaux being, perhaps, the best known. The village of Le Moustier has a well stocked boulangerie/épicerie and an excellent auberge, both of which are open throughout the year.

Places to eat:

• Auberge Napolénnienne (formerly the Vimont) is situated in the village of Le Moustier just a short walk from the house and serves good local food and wine.

• About 1.5km from the house in the direction of Peyzac is the Roque St Christophe where there is a small cafe which serves lunch during the summer.

• There is a restaurant at Le Paradis campsite, this is about a 2km walk along the river path.

• There are number of restaurants in the town of Les Eyzies, approximately 12km from the gîte.

• La Source restaurant in Tursac (about 5 km away) has vegetarian food on the menu.

• Montignac (15 km away) has lots of restaurants and cafes.

• Most of the local villages have their own restaurants, many with traditional menus.

"Superbly located, family friendly, comfortable accommodation"

Our party of five adults and a two-year-old had a great time at Le Sol. The property has plenty of space inside, and outside, the terrace, patio and garden are a safe area for children to play in: our grandson particularly enjoyed looking for the hens, playing football on the front patio and searching for "Eddie Lizard". The owners, Carole and Ken, are very helpful and friendly, whilst also being unobtrusive: all our enquiries and requests were dealt with promptly, efficiently and with a smile.
Le Moustier may be a tiny village but it boasts a good boulangerie and small bar/restaurant, and it is an ideal location for visiting places such as Sarlat, Montignac, Le Bugue, and the stunning Roque St Cristophe and for walks along the Vezere river and surrounding countryside.

"A really relaxing holiday in a very interesting location"

This was our fifth visit to Le Sol, which must speak for itself. Our holidays in the past have included friends and relatives or just the two of us as on this occasion. The gite is large enough to accommodate parties up to six comfortably but it is the location which has made out stays here so enjoyable. La Roque St Christophe is literally a ten minute walk away, and there are plenty of other historic sites within a longer walk or a short drive. Our favourite destination has to be St Leon, which is about ten minutes drive up the valley - very picturesque with some really good places to eat. The auberge in the village (5 mins walk) serves simple but very pleasant food either inside or on the terrace.

Whether lounging by the pool, lazing on the patio, or eating a leisurely meal on the terrace, we look forward each year to our sojourn in this really peaceful and fascinating part of the world. We just wish our holidays here could be longer!
