The Paphos District
Enter another world, where idols and temples, graves and goddesses make up the fabric of everyday life. Paphos is where Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, is said to have risen from the waves that crash on its shores. Tou Romiou, or Aphrodite’s Rock, is a massive chunk of stone that marks the spot. Her birthplace was a place of pilgrimage for the entire Hellenic world.
Other sights include an archaeological museum, the Byzantine castle of Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings, St. Paul's Pillar and the Temple of Aphrodite.
The whole town of Paphos is included in the official UNESCO list of cultural and natural treasures of world heritage. With an all year round Mediterranean climate Paphos is very popular with visitors from the UK, Germany and Scandinavia looking for a cosmopolitan holiday resort.
Paphos is the most established holiday resort in Southern Cyprus and among its attractions are its ancient mosaic floors, historical sites, a beautiful old harbour, its modern hotels and restaurants, situated along the harbour front promenade.
The climate of Cyprus makes the summer months a popular time for tourism in Paphos, when temperatures are mid 30s degrees Celsius every day. However the cooler winter months attract keen walkers, mountain biking enthusiasts and skiers to the Troodos Mountains and Akamas peninsular areas.
Paphos offers shopping in the tourist beach promenade and the old town area of Kato Paphos has a wonderful old covered market area to browse around.
In addition to the wonderful choice of beaches and all year sunshine Paphos offers families a fantastic choice of modern or traditional restaurants, and many things to do and see, from water parks, to go-karting, golf to luxury spas, there is something for all ages to enjoy.
Peyia / Peyia Village area
Peyia is a small, traditional hillside village overlooking Coral Bay and the Paphos coastline with excellent restaurants & tavernas, and an ancient Church. There are locally owned shops (super-markets, bakery, delicatessen, hair dresser, butchers) doctor, pharmacist & banks within a few minutes walk. Coral Bay is a few minutes drive away.
One of the best things about Peyia, is the good choice of places to sample the variety of great food. The first restaurant is less than a 5 minute stroll from the Resort towards the village, Savvas Grill provides genuine Cypriot hospitality, good food and the best village wine.
When you venture into the village you can choose from: a pub and takeaway night, starting off enjoying a glass of wine in The Mill or The Jail, then choosing to eat a kebab from Fitos, or a pizza from the takeway next to the Mill – or even having a couple of drinks in The Jail, whilst you check out the menu from La Frescoe, the deli across the road. La Frescoe boasts a menu which includes chicken curry, moussaka, salad, pasta then you can have a choice of sweets including cheesecake and tiramisu. Or go to the local tavennas! From Michaels (Peyia tavern) where the welcome is huge and the food delicious – but forget a menu! Or try Vrissi tavern, another larger more traditional taverna where good local food is served in a friendly atmosphere.
Just off the main street, is Sophies restaurant , famous for theme nights and delicious food – plus a wonderful Sunday lunch!
Personal favourites include enjoying a coffee and snack at The Mediterranean café, on the corner near the fresh fish shop. The owner, Demitria, is wonderful – and a fantastic mosaic artist! Stay longer and look into the mosaic museum which Demitria has created with love and sheer talent!
Also located just behind the Jail Pub is a the Grande Cafe where you do get good food and great hospitality at a very reasonable price.
And if you don't want to eat, just stroll around the back roads and main street, taking in the many characters both local and tourist, who litter the streets of this warm hearted village...
Peyia is well situated for exploring the western side of Cyprus. It offers easy access to the Akamas peninsula, with its spectacular landscapes, deserted sandy beaches and conservation projects. Lara beach is a must. Be warned though, there are limited facilities in this area and even if you are going on a guided tour or jeep safari please take sun creams and water with you.
To the north of Peyia, many roads meander through the hills and then down to Polis and Latchi. These take you through acres of vineyards in steep valleys with some outstanding views to the Troodos Mountains and on to the coast and Aphrodite's Baths.
Go-karting and horse riding are available nearby.
