The Paphos District

The old town of Paphos remains typically Cypriot with winding streets lined with restaurants, open-air cafes and ancient churches. It also boasts a wonderful indoor market selling a colourful selection of fruits and vegetables.

The lower and newer part of town is known as Kato Paphos and is more of a tourist area. Here you will find an endless choice of restaurants, bars, souvenir shops and a quaint little harbor offering excellent fish taverns overlooked by Paphos castle.

Interesting sites in Paphos are The Mosaics (located in Kato Paphos) where amazing mosaics have been beautifully preserved for 16 centuries in the house of Dionysus. The Tombs of the Kings (Kato Paphos) where a wide area of underground tombs were carved out of solid rock creating burial chambers for ancient nobles.

Approximately 15km east of Paphos you can see Aphrodite's Rock. This impressive landmark is where Aphrodite (Greek goddess of love) is said to have risen from the waves.

PLACES OF INTEREST TO VISIT:

Tombs of the Kings
Wide area containing underground tombs carved out of solid rock dating to 4th century BC, many decorated with Doric pillars. Whether Kings were buried here or not, the magnificence of the tombs gave the locality its name.

The Mosaics of Paphos
House of Dionysos, House of Theseus and the recently excavated House of Aion. Kato Paphos, near the harbour.

The amazing mosaic floors, of these 3rd century AD noblemens' villas are considered among the finest in the Eastern Mediterranean. They mostly depict scenes from Greek mythology and are beautifully executed.

Paphos Odeon
A small 2nd century Odeon entirely built of well-hewn limestone blocks. It was uncovered by the Cyprus Department of Antiquities in 1973-4 and is now regularly used for musical and theatrical performances.

Paphos Castle
Kato Paphos, originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the harbour, was rebuilt by the Lusignans in the 13th century, then dismantled by the Venetians in 1570, who found themselves unable to defend it against the Ottomans, who in turn restored and strengthened it after they captured the island.

Peyia / Peyia Village area

Peyia is situated approximately 15km away from Paphos Town and 3km away from Coral Bay. Peyia is set in the hills behind the popular Coral Bay and is a short drive from the nicest beach in the area at Coral Bay. It offers easy access to the Akamas peninsula, with its spectacular landscapes, deserted sandy beaches and conservation projects. Although this village offers restaurants and bars and it can be described as a ‘typical village in the hills'. An ancient church overlooks its centre, while the narrow streets and alleyways are full of old houses each with their own style of gardening!

Peyia's position guarantees fantastic views of Coral Bay and surrounding areas from almost wherever you happen to be. Ayios Georgios Basilica and the fountains of Peyia, 4.5km from the village, are the ruins of two early Christian basilicas with mosaic floors. Peyia is famous for its fountains in the stone-paved village square.

Near by Coral Bay is one of the most famous sandy beaches and restaurant areas in the Paphos region which is situated on the perimeter of the beautiful Akamas peninsula. Coral Bay has a wealth of restaurants, shops and water sports. Tavernas, restaurants and bars serve fresh fish and typical Cypriot dishes called "meze", souvla and kleftiko. Water sports include jet-skis, paragliding and many more. There are also many nearby bars, banks, supermarkets and souvenir shops to choose from. The beach itself has recently had a complete makeover with new toilets and amenities and has attained the coveted Blue Flag award for its cleanliness.

Adonis Falls is located about 1km from Coral Bay area. According to Greek mythology Adonis Baths is the place where Adonis, the lover of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite, used to take his baths. Nowadays, Adonis is believed to have returned to the Baths, where he died in the arms of Aphrodite.

Adonis baths is a two level refreshing waterfall, it is a beautiful little paradise which is well worth to visit. Here you will have the opportunity of swimming and swing from a rope into the refreshing mountain waters.

A romantic side trip from Paphos is a visit to Baths of Aphrodite. According to legend the Greek Goddess of love and fertility, used to take her baths in this area. Also according to the ancient beliefs if you visit her falls and swim in her waters will give you eternal youth.

Baths of Aphrodite is located in Akamas area, near Polis or 48km north of Paphos. The fountain of Aphrodite's is very difficult to access and can be reached only with a four-wheel drive vehicle or on foot.

place for flight over the see is the Petra Tou Romiou - Rock Of Aphrodite (as known in English). Petra Tou Romiou is located in a spectacular beauty in the old Paphos - Limassol road. According to legend Petra Tou Romiou is the birth place of Goddess of love, Aphrodite.

This area is a very popular tourist spot. The sea at Petra Tou Romiou is generally rough and people usually do not swim. However tourist can ascend the Rock itself, and overlook the waves lashing against it! Also, close to this area there is a restaurant, and a souvenir shop.

Paphos Aphrodite water Park has a huge selection of rides, slides and pool, catering for the whole family and couples as well. Paphos Aphrodite Waterpark attracts over 100,000 visitors each year. There's something here for everyone, either you're a swimmer or not, either you are young or old. It's a cool way to spend a hot day.

If you are looking for pulse-pounding excitement, slippery challenges, relaxing activities and sunbathing, or a combination of all three, there's something for everyone at Aphrodite Waterpark.

Located at the far eastern end of the main coastal road, the Waterpark is situated about 300m inland from the Cypria Maris, Paphian, Pioneer and Phaethon hotels.

There is a large car park for visitors' use located directly in front of the Waterpark.

Paphos Bird Park t is a magical place to visit. It is unique to the area. It is on the main road from Coral Bay to Ayios Georgios Peyia. Paphos Bird Park was created in order to educate the local communities about the world around them and how important is to care birds and animals.

The Park houses a wide range of animals, ranging from reptiles (such as Pythons and Iguanas), to mammals (such as Giraffe); and birds, ranging from ducks, geese and swans, to Ostriches, parrots and owls. The continuous upgrading ensures the Parks reputation is maintained, and encourages visitors to return again and again.

Inside the park there is an Amphitheatre, which holds 350 visitors, where educational talks are held and programs shown on various species found within the park, a handicraft shop, where visitors can witness the making of traditional rugs, a souvenir shop and a traditional Cypriot tavern which enjoys panoramic views over the surrounding area. For children, it is achievable to get close with species of bunny rabbit, Guinea pig, chicks and goats, in the Children's farm. The park also has a veterinary clinic, to treat and nurse the sick animals in the park.

Guestbook for Villa Thission

We would just like to tell you how much we enjoyed our holiday in Cyprus at VILLA THISSION.
We were a party of seven and a mixed age group, Villa Thission catered well for all of us, and the younger members were particularly impressed with the home entertainment system and the spectacular swimming pool. The villa was luxurious, very clean and spacious, and everything provided for. In the evening you could look at the panoramic views overlooking Coral Bay and watch the sun go down.
It was lovely to be given such a warm welcome by Joulietta, who stayed on to meet us even though we had arrived very late, and who was always on hand to answer any of our queries.
I would thoroughly recommend this property, as it was such a wonderful place to relax and enjoy Cypriot hospitality at its best." Scriven, Sommerset, August 2009

"A wonderful place : very quite and comfortable, with a beautiful scenery. Very well equipped and furnished with taste. Excellent welcome and assistance when needed all along the stay. Many thanks to Joulietta and Demetrios ! " Kessler, Strasbourg - July, 2009

"Villa Thisson was amazing ! Views and area hard to beat, amenities all within easy striking diatance but still had the get away from it all feeling. The standard of the villa was excellent, beautifully equipped and decorated. Joulietta, the property manager and her father were extremely helpful, organising car rental and even meeting us personally at the airport. During the holiday she was always at the end of the phone for any querieswe had. All in all perfect.... sorting dates out for next year !! Thank you" Fiona, Camberly - July 2009

"Normally we do not give reviews, but on this occasion we have no reservations about telling any one looking for a great holiday in Cyprus about the excellent accommodation provided at the Thission Villa. The villa has ample accommodation for up to 8 adults, we are a family of 5 and found every thing we needed to have a wonderful stay. The location of the villa is ideal, close enough to enjoy the facilities at Coral Sands, but far enough away to provide peace and quiet, and privacy for the family, a car is needed to make the most of the location. We spent many hours enjoying the wonderful view from the infinite pool. The electrical appliances in the villa are modern and of a standard you would expect from a quality property like this, the high speed wireless internet link was a welcome bonus. If you book this property, rest assured it will live up to your expectations." Kevin, Fleetwood - June 2009

"We had a fabulous holiday at Villa Thission. As one of the first guests, there were a few teeching problems - internet had not yet been installed and sky tv was not available for the first few days. These were minor problems, however, and certainly did not detract from our overall impression of the villa. Joulietta and Demetrios were both extremely helpful and a pleasure to meet. We had a Cypriot meal cooked and delivered by Demetrios one evening which was absolutely delicious. We hope to return next year. EXCELLENT!"
Gordon, Scotland - May 2009
