The Paphos District

The city of Pafos, still usually written as Paphos, on the southwest coast of the island, is, according to legend the birthplace of the Greek Goddess of Love, Aphrodite. It became the capital of the island replacing Salamis during the Hellenistic Period as its masters, the Ptolemy's, favored a location closer to their capital, Alexandria.

Paphos consists of two areas: the coastal resort area (Kato Paphos) and the town itself (Pano Paphos) which is slightly inland. Paphos is very popular with tourists. Among its attractions are its ancient mosaic floors, its beautiful old harbor, its modern hotels and restaurants, situated along the seaside promenade. Other sights include an archeological museum, the Byzantine castle of Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings, St. Paul's Pillar and the Temple of Aphrodite (the goddess of love and beauty).

The city and district of Pafos (Paphos) had remained the most underdeveloped part of the island until 1974.
The Turkish invasion and occupation of the major tourist resorts of Keryneia and Ammochostos led to major investments by the government and the private sector in the district of Pafos (Paphos). There was rapid economic activity in all fields but especially tourism and the district's population stopped shrinking and indeed showed some signs of increasing. Today Pafos (Paphos) is a popular sea resort with a population of 39.500.

Peyia area

Peyia has become one of the fastest developing areas in Paphos. This is easy to understand as the soil is fertile and offers lush green covering. The people are known to be extra friendly and eager to welcome tourists or foreigners. It is a large village compared to most village in Paphos and there is still enough land for development.

On the main road of Peyia one will find several coffee shops, supermarkets, a chemist, bakery and taverns which provide simple but excellent meals. There is also a bank and most necessary amnesties can be found.

This charming village is surrounded by the hills that act as the most beautiful view and offers one of the best photo backgrounds. The peculiar rock formations are unique to the area. Peyia village is known for its abundance of banana plantations. In and around the village these plantations are visible.

The Peyia vrisi is one of the most historical sights. The vrisi is a water fountain that dates back many many years. This fountain was the only source of water supply for the whole village. The fountain can be visited by all and is located in the beautiful stone-paved village square.
