About this location
The Paphos District
The Paphos district of Cyprus is renowned for it's ancient archeological sites, monastries & churches. There are museums art galleries and many fun places to visit such as wineries, bear factories and local craft workshops and markets. The district is full of contrast and natural beauty. You can take any number of roads from the coast with its plantations of bananas, orange and olive groves and meander around the wooded foothills with its vineyards & nut groves into some of the most incredible scenery, on route to the lush mountain area of Troodos. An area complete with beautiful resorts, picturesque villages and Byzantine monastaries and churches. In the winter (November - February) it is home to skiing and other winter sports. Many companies offer day safaris around this area though doing it yourself offers the option of organising an overnight stay.
Travelling along the coastal road from east to west (Paphos Airport) you will move through 'stylish' urban villages like Euro Skibu onto Paphos Town which combines an air of holiday charm with history and olden day elegance evident in the classical style buildings, museums, art galleries and eating places. This sits alongside colourful craft shops, tailors and hilltop markets whilst in the next street you will find familiar European clothing chains, fabulous shoe stores and opticians famous for a prompt service and discounted designer frames. This bustling 'old' town overlooks the sea front area known as Kato Paphos home to the famous Fort & harbour, fish taverna's, souvenir shops, sparkling jewellery stores, wine bars and night clubs..... Kato Paphos has a life of its own. Several beautiful hotels are located here along with many important archeological sites, like the Tomb of the Kings this is what makes the area an ideal location for several of the regions music festivals attracting musicians from all over Europe.
Limosol, 60km east of Paphos is the second largest City of the Island. Surrounded by the wine villages of Troodos it has a fun loving reputation and the best night life in Cyprus. It stages some of the best festivals in the district: The Pre - Lenten Carnival (February) with fancy dress balls, parades and festivities. And the annual Wine Festival in September an extravaganza where wine flows plentifully for all to enjoy. At the magnificent Greco-Roman amphitheatre at Kourion (midway between Paphos & Limossol) you can enjoy an evening of Shakesperean theatre or a summer concert in this most magical out door setting which overlooks the Mediterranean sea.
From the port in Limossol you can pick up a 2/3 day, excusion to Egypt, Syria, Jordon and Israel or to visit some of the Greek Islands.
In comparison Polis at the western tip of this region (25km west of Paphos) is known for its relaxed pace and calm but elegant atmosphere. Probably for this reason it has become home to some of the stars. Near by is the Akamas Peninsular with beautiful scenery and magestic beaches. The nature trail that starts at the Bath of Aphrodite takes you through this truly amazing landscape. In the same area lies Latsi a small fishing port not to be missed... seafood has never tasted so good. This is an area perfect for scuba diving with many diving schools offering courses and organised dives.
The blend of European residents and local villagers makes this captivating and traditional Cypriot village a very 'easy' place to be. For those simply looking for a retreat you could easily while away your days soaking in the friendly, laid back Peyia lifestyle. From your leisurely walk around this intriging area you may be drawn by the smell of freshly baked bread or pastries and the aroma of fresh coffee and local fare. Whilst the evening beckons a time to relish local wines and Cypriot meze around the open fires of the village tavernas, over looking the dappled lights of the hillside homes.
Sun, sea and sand is just a short way off and you can't fail to be impressed by the sandy beach, sparkling waters and tranquil coves of Coral Bay, a place for both fun and relaxation. The surrounding popular resort is more low key than Kato Pafos a 20 minute drive away but ideal for families as it is home to a range of 'fun' activities, water sports, and the area's stables. There is a wealth of bars and restaurants to try and nightlife to suit all ages so whether you choose to spend your day soaking in the sun or paragliding...and your evening taking a romantic walk along the beach in the moonlight or dancing until the small hours, Coral Bay can offer something of interest for everyone.
In contrast the surrounding area is home to 2 of the region's 3 golf courses, take Tsada set in the grounds of a 12th century Monastery 550m above sea level a course within 15 mins drive. Peyia also borders the national park with its pine scented forests and twinkling lakes. The surrounding villages each different from the next gives visitors a unique insight into the history and culture of the area adding to the rich tapestry of what you can find.
Peyia, Coral Bay is a central point in this region and the true beauty of staying in this location is that it offers you the opportunity to really experience all that Paphos has to offer. So no matter what type of holiday you're looking for you're journey starts here.
