Willowbank Lodges/River Birch
About the home
River Birch log cabin, part of Willowbank Lodges, nestles in a small hamlet in the heart of the Pewsey Vale bordering the Kennet and Avon canal. The five luxury log cabins have been solidly built from Russian redwood and are situated in three and a half acres including a private lake and are surrounded by beautiful countryside and a wide variety of wildlife. River Birch cabin directly overlooks the lake and is one of the more private cabins and is ideal for a romantic break.
Bird lovers will enjoy watching the various families of waterfowl on the lake, including our indigenous pair of swans, herons and our kingfisher who flies up and down both the lake and the stream and can be seen sitting on the railings near the end cabin, Kingfisher, so named.
Ramblers and cyclists alike will enjoy the miles of walks straight from the cabin gates with panoramic views of the Pewsey Vale from Martinsell Hill and of course we are on the National 4 cycle trail. Our ancient Savernake Forest is only a 5 minute drive away and is quite stunningly beautiful whether you are walking, picnicking or cycling.
The cabins provide a superb holiday base from which to explore the ancient county of Wiltshire and are easily accessed from the M3 and M4. Furthermore, the airports of London Heathrow, Bristol, Southampton and Bournemouth are between one and one and a half hours drive away. The local village of Pewsey is less than two miles away and boasts a good supermarket, butcher, baker, petrol station, garage, Indian restaurant, cafes and pubs and it also has a railway station with a fast train service to London and the West Country.
No smoking is allowed in the cabins but can be enjoyed outside under the cover of the veranda.
Well behaved dogs welcome and verandas now have gates therefore secure for dogs and young children.

We are very privileged to be living in an area steeped in tradition and history, with three World Heritage sites within an easy driving distance (Stonehenge, Avebury and Bath). We have many delightful towns and villages to explore, country houses, museums and gardens to visit and plenty of traditional pubs and excellent restaurants.
We have a quick rail link to London from Pewsey Station less than five minutes drive away and you could plan a day/evening out in London to enjoy the sites and take in a theatre. Oxford, Salisbury and Bath are also within a reasonable drive away and offer good shopping, restaurants, theatres and interesting places to visit.
Wiltshire has a variety of landscapes but we are very lucky to be living in this beautiful part of Wiltshire where we can enjoy the wide open spaces of the Marlborough Downs and the Pewsey Vale with its white horses or alternatively walk in the ancient Savernake Forest with all its dappled glades, meandering paths and beautiful old trees, some nearly 1000 years old.
Then the Kennet and Avon canal is a different landscape altogether and you can enjoy long walks from Willowbank Lodges, through little villages with their quaint pubs or hire a boat for the day and go further afield. There really is something for everyone to enjoy in this part of the world.
The Pewsey area
Pewsey is a charming little village which is less than two miles from Willowbank Lodges and, although small, boasts a surprising number of ameneties. We have an excellent supermarket open seven days a week, a butcher, baker (delicious old fashioned donuts and lardy bread!) petrol station, post office, bank, gift shops, florists, art gallery and visitor centre, internet cafe and various coffee shops and pubs.
In addition, we have an excellent award winning tennis club where Willowbank Lodges has membership for its guests and a leisure centre with a swimming pool, squash courts, etc.
Slightly further afield, Marlborough boasts a large variety of restaurants and pubs, boutiques, antique shops, two fine churches and has the widest high street in the country. Now it is probably more famous for its International Jazz Festival which takes place in July (13th-15th this year) – a glut of musicians and singers, new bands and old favourites from all over the world, really an experience not to miss. Another music festival taking place this year (April 14th) just north of Marlborough is OneFest with Damon Albarn giving us a preview of his Dr Dee.
Local artists open up their studios (Open Studios) to the public during four weekends in July so what with other local musical and artistic events, plenty for those who want to absorb a little local culture.
For those crop circle enthusiasts, we are right in the midst of crop circle country and usually there are quite a number of sometimes quite spectacular crop circles to be found on the Downs or in the Vale, within 10 minutes drive of Willowbank Lodges.

It's s lovely to find somewhere that has been kitted out thoughtfully. Is lovely and cosy ( it was bitterly cold outside) and has fantastic light. All the information is clear, and Nicky makes everything easy to arrange. It's great for creatives - plenty to paint and photograph. The lodge is full of light. A great place to grab a break. |

We stayed for the Easter weekend 2013 in River Birch and were so happy when we arrived and saw how beautiful the cabin was. It has been decorated to a very high standard and made super cosy that you feel 'at home' right away :) Everything in the cabin feels new and the place was immaculate!! The interiors and the design have really been thought through and provide a very luxurious and comfortable stay! River Birch has a gorgeous view of the lake with swans, ducks and birds always in sight. It also has the joy of feeling very private as it doesnt overlook anything or anyone! The surrounding area is just a small part of the beautiful English Countryside - there are plenty of walking tracks to keep you entertained ! I loved this place and will definately be recomending to my friends and hopefully going back again in summer :) |

We had the most wonderful weekend away in a perfect log cabin in Pewsey. When we arrived the cabin was already heated up and ready for a cosy night in. There is so much attention to detail that we had everything we could possibly need. In the mornings I enjoyed the view out over the lake, watching the swans and ducks come and go. We visited nearby Marlborough the next afternoon for a lovely pub lunch. We hope to visit Willowbank lodges again very soon so we can explore more of the beautiful surrounding area. |
