Home description
"Casa delle Rose" is a typical Tuscan village house with quaint stone staircases linking the four levels. It is perched on the end of the village overlooking its own beautiful terraced garden - and beyond to the steep chestnut-clad slopes of the Pesciatina.
Wonderful living spaces are located on the ground floor. The dining room is a converted stable with a fine terracotta arch. The attractive kitchen/living area opens to a small courtyard that is perfect for alfresco breakfasts. A rose-covered arch leads into the garden, and down a few steps there is a wisteria covered pergola sheltering an extensive paved terrace furnished with garden furniture and a Tuscan barbecue. A picturesque stone path winds around the garden and takes you to the village below where there is an excellent restaurant and a great delicatessen.

The Tuscany region
Tuscany is one of the most beautiful regions in Italy. The wonderful Renaissance cities of Florence (1hour) , Lucca (30 min.), Pisa (1 hour) and Siena (2 hours) are all within easy reach. These are the great art cities of the region. However, Pietrabuona is also ideally situated for day trips to the beaches of Viareggio (1 hour), the mountain resort of Abetone for walks and skiing (1 hour), the marble quarries of Carrara (90 min.), and the spa town and golf course of Montecatini ( 30 min). The beautiful Cinque Terre region is also about 2 hours away.
There is an excellent range of Tuscan guide books available on the book shelves at "Casa delle Rose" . These deal with all aspects of sightseeing in Tuscany - from gardening to sculpture to wine-tasting! In addition to this Library , all guests are provided with a booklet entitled "Your ABC to enjoying life at Casa delle Rose". This provides detailed information on all aspects of enjoying a vacation in this part of Tuscany.
Pescia / Pietrabuona area
Pescia is a busy market town conveniently situated about 10 minutes from Chiesina Uzzanese, an autostrada stop on the A11 autostrada between Florence (1 hour) and Lucca (30 mins.) Pescia is a town of about 20,000 inhabitants and is well supplied with good restaurants, excellent shopping, historic buildings, a railway station and a delightful small theatre. The town is famous for its strawberries and asparagus, and is home to one of the largest commercial flower markets in Europe. There is a regular Saturday morning street market held in the splendid Piazza Mazzini.
Pietrabuona is located about 4km north of Pescia. The village of Pietrabuona, which is located immediately below Pietrabuona Castello, has an excellent restaurant, bar, butcher, Post Office, and a delicatessen where wonderful home-cooked Italian meals can be purchased. "La Torbola", the small bar at the top end of the village has a wood-fired oven, where freshly-baked focaccia may be obtained in the mornings. For summer visitors, there is an excellent resort-style swimming pool available at the Hotel San Lorenzo, about 2 kilometres along the road from Pietrabuona to Pescia.

Further details indoors: Thanks to the strict external restoration code that exists today, Pietrabuona Castello has remained a virtually intact seventeenth century village with the beautiful stone houses providing comfortable homes for their modern inhabitants. "Casa delle Rose" has retained the traditional appeal of a village house, while being well-provided with good modern appliances. A small sitting-room, three large double bedrooms and two bathrooms are located on the three upper levels. Daytime activities mostly take place on the ground floor - or in the beautiful garden below.
Further details outdoors: Pietrabuona Castello is accessed by a winding road that leads up from the valley below, through a narrow entrance in the original walls. There are no streets in the "Castello", only a central piazza where cars are parked, and where people gather in the evenings to chat and watch their children play. Beautiful stone paths then lead to the houses in the village.

Guestbook for "Casa delle Rose"
"I do not understand how you can bear to let other people live in your beautiful house!!! Mike and I chose to use the top bedroom because of the amazing views. It did mean a lot more climbing of stairs, but we thought it was worth it. Did all the usual tourist things such as visiting Pisa, Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Viareggio, Montecatini Terme and Alto, and one of my favourites was the visit to Carrara. I've read so much about the famous sculptors going there to choose their blocks of marble, that I found it fascinating.I could go on forever about how much we enjoyed our holiday but I had best stop. If you ever need someone to look after the house for a while please do not hesitate to get in touch!!!! We liked "Da Nerone" so much that we went there 3 times." Pam and Mike...................Scotland, U.K. July, 2002.
"We had a wonderful time at "Casa delle Rose". It's a gem of a house. We loved it. It was so authentic and yet extremely comfortable, and we greatly appreciated the superb ABC booklet which you so kindly provided. It was indispensible and led us to the delights of Cinzia, da Nerone and Lucca, amongst others, an excellent mix of information and valuable insights. We would love to return with our daughter. We know this is a long shot, but we have another week's holiday from 24th to 31st of this month (May). "Casa delle Rose" doesn't happen to be free the, does it? If not we'll probably have to wait until next year. Either way thank you for a memorable holiday". Jo and David........................Somerset, U.K. April, 2003
"We greatly enjoyed our stay in "Casa delle Rose". The rest of the group were friends from Bulgaria. We were at university together, but we don't see each other very often these days. It was nice to meet in Italy and talk, talk, talk. We made the best of the beautiful garden and the barbecue. The house had everything we could wish for, and it was a very romantic experience for our friends from Bulgaria to be in an old stone house surrounded by beautiful countryside, as they all live in flats in Sofia. We enjoyed the food at Da Sandrino, and of all the places we visited, Siena and Volterra, with its Etruscan museum, were voted everybody's favourite. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the place, and the fact that it was pleasantly cool in the evenings- coming from England we were worried that it may be too hot for us." Milen and Svetla ...........................Essex, U.K. August, 2004.
"We were delighted with "Casa delle Rose". It was more than I expected. We loved all the books and the garden, and there was enough space for our whole family. The outdoor dining was an absolute bonus. My granddaughter celebrated her first birthday in style in Montecatini Terme with a ride on the carousel, a horsedrawn carriage ride around the park, gelati at a cafe and of course dinner under the wisteria at "Casa delle Rose". Incidentally, thank you so much for organizing the cot and high-chair. It made a big difference" Jo and Ruby....................Cranbourne, Vic. July, 2006
"Just a note to say what a wonderful time we all had at Pietrabuona and how much we enjoyed staying at "Casa delle Rose". We all agreed it was the best holiday we have all had - being in one place for three weeks and taking daily trips to all the places we wanted to visit - Carrara, Cinque Terre, Torre del Lago, Puccini's house, Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano, and many trips to Florence and Lucca. We even managed to see "Tosca" in the Church of San Giovanni in Lucca, as well as the annual procession of the Holy Face. We invariably took the train to Florence as it was so cheap, and avoided any parking problems. We dined at Da Nerone several times - porcini mushrooms were in season. New wine glasses were produced when we ordered a bottle of Brunello! We attended several celebrations for the Festa di San Mateo in the Piazza in Pietrabuona, including an excellent evening with 3 choruses singing - one from Arezzo, one from Pescia and one from Florence - and they ended the evening singing "Va Pensioro" from Nabucco, together. September was an excellent time of year to be in Pietrabuona - we had great weather with only a couple of nights with storms, and the mists in the mornings and the sound of constant running water was such a delight after the water restrictions of Brisbane". Colin & Isobel Walter & Beverley....................... Brookfield, Qld. September, 2007
