Home description
The Villa stands in 7 acres of beautiful, rural Italian farmland with many types of young trees: cherry, olive, plum, peach, walnut, almond and weeping willow. Once you navigate the half kilometre driveway from the single track road to the driveway, you will see the cherry trees on your left and a beautiful view to the right which over looks the valley and the river. As you approach the villa you will see the pool and patio to the left and a veranda and doorway to the house. In front of you to the right is the barn and old chicken coup to the left is the garage/storeroom.
The pool is 8x4metres surrounded by a large patio area, lounging beside which is thoroughly recommended with a Peroni or glass of wine. This patio area really comes into it's own during the hot summer months. The storeroom is primarily for garden tools (and wine) but also contains a table football and a selection of ball games.
There's also a working pizza oven and outside wash basin. The barn used to house donkeys, but is now home to a tractor and most enjoyably an owl, which you can frequently see flying at dusk, along with other birds of prey. These are not the only wildlife attraction; lizards are plentiful, frogs and toads can be heard, but rarely seen and magical fire flies at certain times of year.

The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region
Abruzzo, set between the Appenine mountains and the Adriatic sea, is known as the 'green region of Europe', with over a third of it's surface protected. 4 National Parks, high picks for trekking (Gran Sasso), skiing resorts (Maiella mountain and Campo Imperatore), sandy and stone beaches (Pineto, Torre di Cerrano and S.Vito Chietino), lots of medieval towns on top of hills, handicrafts, museums and a lot more. Local produces such as 'arrosticini' (skewered barbecued mutton), truffles, cheese (pecorino), hand-made pasta, liquors (ratafia, genziana, centreba), saffron and of course the Montepulciano D'Abruzzo and the Trebbiano white wine make it special from the "food and wine/enogastronomic" point of view!
In addition to all this, its central position makes it easy to reach Rome (about 2 1/2 hours by car) and you could extend your holiday to Croatia taking the ferry from Pescara!
Pescara / Castiglione Messer Raimondo area
Villa Degna is approximately 40Kms north west of Pescara, set relatively high (300m), into the agricultural heartland of Abruzzo.
It's general location being between Penne and Teramo just off the SS81. It is perfectly situated in idyllic countryside. Only 2 kms away lies the small village of Piane where the are several shops including a supermarket, café and fresh fruit and veg shop and even a bank, a baby's clothing shop and ladies shoe shop. A further short distance away lies Cesi, which has a larger (cheaper) supermarket (called Sosti), with an excellent butcher, bar, pizzeria, fruit & veg shop and a florist. There are also many excellent quality restaurants in the local vicinity.
Nearby Castiglione M.R. (15" drive) has additional shops, including an excellent butchers and fresh pasta shop, as well as a bank and post office. Also, Penne (15" drive) has a good range of shops and a lovely old medieval section.
The sandy beaches of the Adriatic are just 30-40 minutes from our villa. Abruzzo has a very long coast line of pine-fringed, clean, sandy beaches that stretch for more than 15 miles. The shallow, warm waters of the Adriatic are ideal for safe family bathing (keep in mind Torre di Cerrano beach!).
Nearby is Pescara, a modern city with a full range of facilities including an outstanding international airport and a large tourist marina, considered to be one of the best marinas in Italy.
Walking/rambling: You can reach the Gran Sasso & Maiella National Parks in just 40 minutes. The National Parks cover one-third of the territory of Abruzzo, so there is an abundance of walks and trails of various lengths and levels of difficulty. You can enjoy majestic mountain scenery with a wide variety of flora and fauna, and, if you are lucky, you may spot a wild bear, wolf or chamois.
Possible walks and visits: - Atri and the Calachi reserve; - tour of Loreto Aprutino and Penne; - Castelli and its surroundings - pottery and high mountains; - Calderone glacier (the southernmost glacier in Europe); - Along the sheep-track; - Monastries and Hermitages; - the capital of the region: L'Aquila; - Teramo.
