The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region
From wonderful beaches to rugged mountains in an unspoilt region, together with rustic charm, fabulous weather and a wonderfully warm welcome from it's people, Abruzzo has it all. Within easy reach you can climb, camp, picnic, mountain bike, horse ride and even ski in winter or just soak up the sun on the strip of beautiful beaches on the Adriatic Riviera and shop in the large range of boutiques and shops in Pescara itself.
This is an area of outstanding natural beauty renowned for it's deep rooted traditions and historic sites. Largely undiscovered in comparison to other regions in Italy, there is a wealth of medieval castles, hill top villages, ruins, elegant piazzas to visit notwithstanding Abruzzo's most famous tourist attraction the "Parco Nazionale D'Abruzzo".
The National Park and Nature Reserve are said to be the most important in Italy and the most well equipped for camping and recreational activities. Beautiful flora and fauna of every colour and description share the park with wolves, eagles, large wild cats and the brown bear.
Abruzzo is also renowned for it's food and wine with many typical dishes on offer. Local wines are "Montepulciano" and "Trebbiano" d'Abruzzo.
Other significant areas of interest in the region include:-
Castelli - famous for it's hilltop town, monk settlement and local pottery L'Aquila - once the capital of Abruzzo, steeped in medieval history and famous for it's 99 fountains. Beautiful piazza San Giorgio - remains of a II century temple and prehistoric remains can be seen. Atri - many churches and historical palaces Rocca di Calascio - ancient fortress ruins and mountain restaurants. Caramanico Terme - Thermal Springs and area of outstanding natural beauty Valle delle Centro Cascate - Valley of the 100 waterfalls
Pescara / Moscufo area
During the summer months, each village has it's own food festival where specialities such as "Porchetta" (roast suckling pig) or "Arrosticini" (BBQed skewered mutton) can be tried alongside the locals. Music and dancing of all varieties, market stalls and fireworks are usually also to be found.
Pescara boasts 14km of beautiful beaches with a wide stretch of promenade.* Along the beach front, the daytime cafes and beach huts offering snacks and watersports turn into beautiful settings for sipping a cocktail or glass of wine by the sea or sampling the local fish dishes. Most stay open until late during the Summer months offering excellent night-life.
In the centre of town, you will find hundreds of boutiques and shopping areas to satisfy every taste. At the newly built Marina, the largest tourist harbour on the Adriatic, eating and shopping facilities can be found along with daily boat trips, fishing, diving, sailing and windsurfing.
The nearby village of Pianella, approx 2.5km, can provide you with every local amenity with a small supermarket, several restaurants and bars, shops and a market once a week.
Other villages close by include, Penne, Loreto Aprutino and Castiglione Messer Raimondo to name but a few of the typical medieval villages which can be visited.
*Villa customers will have access to a permanent spot on the beach with umbrella, sun loungers and deck chairs at no extra cost.
