The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region

Welcome to the mid Adriatic Coast of Italy, where the City of Pescara sits at the mouth of the Pescara River, which winds its way down from the highest peaks of the Appenine Mountains.

The river divides the city, the largest and most important Italian city on the Adriatic coast, into the Centrale (the ancient Castellamare Adriatico) on the northern side and Porta Nuova (the "new gate") on the southern side. Both parts of the city have undergone redevelopment since World War II, when Pescara suffered heavy allied bombing, and a lot of destruction at the hands of the retreating Nazis. The Porta Nuova district has seen the most recent development, including the building of modest "skyscrapers" and other modern buildings.

Most representative of the new port, is Pescara Centrale, one of the largest train stations in Europe, done in the Art Nouveau style. Trains regularly and frequently arrive from - and depart for - Rome to the east, Ancona and Bologna to the north, and Bari to the south.

Pescara is spread along 20 kilometers (15 miles) of coast line, its most highly industrialized area contained in the area south from Pescara toward Chieti. Not surprisingly, Pescara is a commercial sea port, but it is also Abruzzo's most important industrial centre where electronics, heavy machinery, processed foods and cement are manufactured. Travelers can catch ferries to Croatia and the Dalmatian Coast, on the opposite side of the Adriatic.

The most popular beaches are spread out along the littoral north of the city. Hundreds of lidos - called "stabilimenti" in Pescara - offer beach access, the usual umbrellas and lounge chairs, but also an immense variety of restaurants, cafes, children's playgrounds, arcades and the like.

If you like bumping shoulders with the semi-naked multitudes, you have arrived in paradise because thousands upon thousands of Italians, and additional thousands of other Europeans, vacation at Pescara during July and August. They do not, by and large, come to explore "historical" Pescara, but to take the sun, frolic in the water, enjoy the night life, and, of course, shop in some of the most trendy boutiques outside Rome, Milan and Perguia. Be forewarned - Pescara can be an expensive city for tourists, though slightly less so in the off season.

If you do wish to spend time off the beach, there is more to see than might meet the eye at first glance. Pescara is as ancient a place as it gets in Italy and many ruins and monuments can be found, particularly in Vecchio Pescara.

Abruzzo is picturesque in its scenery. Many old villages were abandoned and remain largely intact and the country side is rich with historic sites. It is often said that Abruzzo has as many castles as it does sheep. Most of this sleepy region has remained lock in medieval times making Abruzzo the first stop for those seeking to take a glance at the past or a chance to see nature as it was hundreds of years ago, unspoiled and perfect.

The region can be divided into two parts. The western part of the region is mountainous; the eastern portion of the region consists mostly of rolling foothills slowly sloping down to long stretches of wide, sandy coastline. The three main rivers in Abruzzo, the Aterno-Pescara, the Sangro and the Vomano flow from the mountains down to the Adriatic Sea carving deep gorges into the country side. Because of the proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea the mountains endure heavy rain and snowfall and low temperatures all year round. There is excellent skiing in the region. The Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, an impressive national park founded in 1922, is host to every variety plant and animal imaginable and considered the most important park in Italy. No other park in Italy is better developed for camping and recreational activities. Great stands of beech, oak, and birch can be found in the park a long with beautiful wild flowers of every colour and design. The brown bear of the region along with wolves, eagles, and large wild cats find refuge in the park, making Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo a haven for vanishing species.

Pescara / Pescara Citta area

Pescara is the major city of its Abruzzo region, and is one of the most important economic, commercial, and tourist centres on the Adriatic coast. Featuring a shoreline that extends for more than 20 kilometers, Pescara is a large vacation spot on the Adriatic Coast. It is most popular among Italian tourists during the summer months. Situated in the sea are many breakwaters made with large rocks, placed to provide calm waters near the shore. Along its shoreline, Pescara has clubs that one may join in order to enjoy the beach; in Italian, they are called stabilimenti, which means establishments. In these clubs, there are restaurants, playgrounds, and permanent stationary umbrellas that one obtains by joining the club. There is a large shopping district with many fashion boutiques and a lively nightlife. Its university is named for Gabriele D'Annunzio (Università D'Annunzio). Between Pescara and nearby Chieti lies a major industrial district.

Between 1924 and 1961, Pescara hosted the Coppa Acerbo automobile race. Every July Pescara holds an International Jazz Festival.

Pescara was the birthplace of Gabriele D'Annunzio and Ennio Flaiano. Vittoria Colonna was the marchioness of Pescara.

Pescara has been set to host the XVI Mediterranean Games in 2009, having defeated Rijeka, Croatia and Patras, Greece for the privilege.
