Pascoso, the town.
The house is nestled in a small mountain town called Pascoso, in the Apuane Park, 2,231 feet above sea level. Pascoso, in the Tuscan province of Lucca, has just under 100 inhabitants and is so small, with such narrow stone roads, that cars enter town along a short strip of the main road only. Nearly all the houses in town are built in stone, including their rooftops, and the smooth stones of the streets were laid hundreds of years ago. Pascoso is a hikers's paradise; however, it is not far from the 'cities of arts' of Tuscany: Lucca, Pisa, Florence and Siena are 15, 30, 60, and 95 miles far; moreover, Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi, among the most famous Italian beaches, are 30 miles far, including 15 on the highway.
There is a private garden of approximately 100 square meters fournished (table, chairs, sun umbrella, light,BBQ)
Traffic is almost unheard in Pascoso. There are no nightclubs, bars, or other attractions of mass tourism. However, you will find all the essential services provided by the town's store, which is run by a local family and sells everything to meet your daily needs, from fruits and vegetables, meat and bread to laundry detergent.
Next door to the store, the family runs an old style trattoria welcoming in its genuine Tuscan hospitality, you'll feel like a guest in their home. The decor, complete with wooden benches, checkered tablecloths, and flasks of Tuscan wine on each table, adds to its charm. The dishes served are exclusively those typical of the region-wild game, delicious homemade pasta, Tuscan wines and cheeses and last, but certainly not least, homemade cakes and pies.
By car, you can also reach more refined, fine dining restaurants in the surrounding area. There is a post office open all year round and, just a few kilometers from Pascoso, there are towns with more stores.
Not far from town (a 10- to 15-minute walk or 5-minute drive) is a charming little church on a tiny piazza, shaded in the summer by age-old trees.
From Pascoso the road in asphalt continues for another 8 to 10 km (5 to 6 miles), and ends at the foot of Mount Matanna (4,000 feet above sea level) where you will find breathtaking fields and a restaurant.
Pascoso's finest asset, and the most important reason to travel there, is the nature in which it is literally immersed. In many ways, the surrounding mountains and age-old trees are wild and untouched, the dense thickets grow untamed and the canyons, crossed by mule tracks, curl open to reveal sweet pastures where one can lie down in the soft, mountain sun. Pascoso is a hiker's paradise, from short strolls in the hillsides with your children or dog, stopping to taste cool water at a natural spring, to longer hikes, where you can walk all day long without meeting a soul and sleep overnight in one of the many shelters that dot the valley. Many of the mule paths are suitable for mountain bikes and horses, which you can rent in Pascoso. For some hikes you might want to drive a few short minutes to your point of departure, whereas for others, you can leave directly on foot from your front door. And clearly, for visitors with off-road vehicles, the opportunities are endless.
A section of the Turrite Stream is reserved for fishing. Trout abound, although, given the low levels of the water, they generally do not grow to be very large. Further downstream, the Turrite flows into a large, artificial basin where the fish are less numerous, but much bigger. For those of you who like an easy catch, there are fishing pools just a few short miles from Pascoso, alongside a fish-breeding center, where you can buy fresh trout.
As you may have already imagined, the only sounds you'll hear in Pascoso are dogs barking and townsfolk chatting. Quiet reigns through the mountainside. The area is ideal for hiking, horseback riding (there are two barns where you can rent horses), and biking. A swimming pool is run by a local who, for a small fee opens it to visitors. In mid-August, Pascoso organizes a parade dedicated to the Madonna, in which a statue of the Holy Mother is carried high on a canopy throughout the town.
There are public pools at 20-30 Kms.
At 3-4 Km from the house there is a public tennis court. A tennis coach is available on site.
The house is situated under an hours drive from many of Italy's finest and most picturesque golf courses. Montecatini Golf Club - 37 km -35 mins Situated in the Tuscan countryside, this 18 hole golf course has been built in the hilly countryside;Club Golf Montelupo - 40 km -40 mins; the Tirrenia Golf Club (9 hole).
