About this location

The Tuscany region

Lucca is in northern Tuscany and features nearby good quality Monte Carlo vineyards and producers of olive oil. There is a plethora of eating out opportunities for both families and "gastrophiles". Florence, Volterra, Siena and other cultural venues with great art are in easy reach. Lucca is Puccini hometown and opera lovers can enjoy nearby Torre del Lago open air theatre. If music is what you are after, Lucca also hosts a Music Festival in July with world acclaimed artists.

Pietrasanta very popular with international artists and sculptors well worth a visit.

Pescaglia

You will be in the heart of Northern Tuscany and near the Garfagnana ("the great woodlands") on the edge of the Alpi Apuane National Park, surrounded by mountain ranges affording great opportunities for walking, climbing, cycling (both road and mountain) and horse riding. The Abetone ski resort is less then an hour distant. Paragliding facility is literally down the road. Aside beautiful Lucca with its Villas, Churches and Art, those seeking a more cosmopolitan break are catered for by nearby Forte dei Marmi with its high end boutique shops, private beaches and nightclubs. In the middle ages the main house on site was occupied by the famous Guelf family who were at war with the Ghibeline family.

"Idyllic Cottage in Beautiful Surroundings"

We spent a few days here in the Tuscan hills and wish we could have spent longer. It is set in a very peaceful location and the interior and gardens are both immaculately presented. If you are looking for somewhere for a quiet getaway, this is the perfect location!

Everything in the cottage was pretty much as described. It is well-equipped with satellite TV, stereo system with iPod adapter, hot tub etc and the friendly hosts Simon and Trish provided some much-appeciated welcome supplies.

If you don't mind a bit of driving you can explore a lot of the highlights of Tuscany from here. Lucca is about half an hour away (and well worth a visit on its own) and we also visited the Tuscan mountains to the north, Cinque Terre on the west coast, Pisa to the south and Florence (where we drove to Lucca and got the train) to the east.

One piece of advice: If you're not used to Italian signposting and familiar with the area then print off some maps before you go. Sat nav is helpful to a certain extent, but will take you down a lot of 'interesting' windy backroads!
