The Umbria region
Umbria is the green heart of Italy, with its beautiful rolling hills, mountains and the largest number of fortified hilltop villages in Italy, mainly from the Medieval period all unspoilt. Imagine spending your days surrounded by such beauty and where you are met with such friendliness from the locals.
This traditional farmhouse is set in a hamlet on a plateau with beautiful views. The apartment is located in the part of the house which was the old granary. From atop the hill behind us one gets the most stunning views of Lago Traimeno. Wild boar roam the woods at night only a few minutes from our door, yet we are less than 30 minutes from the bustling town of Perugia. Our region of Italy is mainly farmland in unspoilt countryside, with the added bonus of little traffic.
Vecchia Casa is within easy reach in Umbria of: Perugia, the bustling university town famous for its Jazz and Chocolate festivals Assisi the 2nd most important religious monument in Italy after the Vatican, the birthplace of St Francis, and a charming town with many art treasures Deruta where majolica ware has been hand crafted for centuries, why not watch them at work Orvieto noted for its fine cathedral, Etruscan tombs, and wine making Gubbio, a beautiful town with splendid views Lago Trasimeno where there is a bird sanctuary and boating and fishing are avvailable The lago also has 2 lovely islands which may be reached by ferry
We are situated between 4 of the major wine making districts of Italy, both in Umbria and Tuscany: Orvieto Montefalco Montalcino Montelpulciano
In Tuscany one can easily reach: Cortona the beautiful and ancient hilltop town made famous in Under the Tuscan Sun Arezzo famous for its antiques fair, museums and the magnificent frescos painted by Pietro della Francesa Siena renowned for the horse race in the central piazza Pienza for its architecture Florence which needs no introduction
Umbria is famous for it's olive oil, arguably the best in the world, black truffles for which it is world renowned, a variety of cheeses and its wonderful meats, most notably pork and lamb. It is truly the place to try simple, traditional cooking in one of the lovely ristoranti locally or in the many neighbouring villages. One may also try recreating our traditional dishes in the fully equipped kitchenette.
Cookery lessons are available both locally and in Perugia.
Perugia / Tavernelle, Umbria area
Tavernelle, our local town, is only 8 minutes by car, where one can find banks, shops, supermarkets, cafes and ristoranti, as well as a small market on Mondays. Many of the neighbouring villages have a selection of places in which to dine and to the rear of our village one can find a gourmet restaurant in a most beautiful setting, a top a hill overlooking the Lago.
Throughout the year, there are many festivals, both religious or celebrating the various harvests, many with ancient origins and food and entertainment, often the participants are in Medieval costume. This is the perfect opportunity to meet and see the locals enjoying themselves. During Easter one can watch the splendid and moving procession of the cross through the Medieval town of Panicale and travel along our local hill, lit by candle light.
This is an area with many sports activities including: swimming, fishing, hiking, trekking, horse-back riding, mountain biking, golf, and boating, all within easy reach. From our village one can a walk through some of the most beautiful countryside where many of the paths are marked.

Guestbook
We stayed at Vecchia Casa in April 2008, for a Romantic week-away (or so my Wife tells me). The exquisitely and thoughtfully appointed apartment, complete with antiques is the perfect base to relax or visit the numerous historic and beautiful hilltop towns and villages of Umbria and Tuscany. Even a day trip to Rome was relaxing, as the mainline, Venice to Rome railway station is only a short 30 minutes drive away in “sleepy” Chiusi. Great restaurants and a helpful “hostess” in Karen-Louise, ensures we will return to Umbria as soon as possible.
Paul and Dora Morris Rutland UK
My husband and I stayed at Vecchia Casa for 5 days. We wanted a private and lovely stay in Umbria that would allow us to explore nearby areas including Tuscany. Vecchia Casa has all that and more. Karen, the energetic devoted proprietress was a wonderful hostess and we had all the privacy we needed in the tastefully constructed and decorated apartment that connects to her charming country house on a hillock in a tiny commune near Tavernelle. She helped us locate the markets and sites to visit including Panicale, Cortona, Assisi, and Perugia. One needs a car to explore the countryside, but in the entire 5 days of our rental we didn't need to fill up once with gas.
Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer.

Serene country walks, the calm of Lake Trasimeno and the history and splendour of Perugia and Assisi were all accessible from the wonderful farmhouse apartment within Vecchia Casa. The area provided the perfect base with which to explore the idyllic region of Umbria, and Vecchia Casa the restful stay that made our trip truly memorable. The apartment was beautifully decorated with charming rustic antiques; Karen-Louise acted as the perfect host, providing fresh produce from her garden and always on hand to offer local advice and recommendations. All this contributed to making this a truly fantastic holiday.
