The Umbria region

Located within the beautifully-restored 13th century Castello di Gaiche, and overlooking the castle courtyard, the apartments, all refurnished and redecorated, provide classic Umbrian accommodation in a peaceful and attractive location. The area is excellent for walking or cycling. A number of circular walks start from the castle, taking you through the rolling, wooded Umbrian countryside, filled with rosemary, lavender and olive trees. Access is via a partly unmade 1 km road winding up the hill above Collebaldo and the picturesque Castiglion Fosco. Castello di Gaiche is positioned at the top of a hill overlooking the Nestore valley, some 18km south of Lake Trasimeno, 30km from Assisi and 18 km from the medieval city of Perugia.

Perugia / Gaiche area

Castello di Gaiche is positioned at the top of a hill overlooking the Nestore valley, some 18km south of Lake Trasimeno, 30km from Assisi and 18 km from the medieval city of Perugia. Gaiche is centrally placed for art, history and architecture. The artist Perugino was born and died in Perugia, and both there and in many surrounding towns (including Città della Pieve and Panicale) are examples of his work. North Umbria was a central part of the ancient Etruscan empire; the Etruscan museum in Chiusi houses one of the best collections outside Rome. The amazing pink-stoned town of Assisi is about forty minutes away, while classic red-brown Siena is slightly further. Florence, Rome and Pisa are day trips, by car or train. Another tourist attraction is the lake Trasimeno, which offers water sports (wind-surfing, pedalos, yachts etc.). There is a ferry service from point to point around the lake and to the three islands. Polvese, one of the islands, is a nature reserve.

A number of different festivals and special occasions are a must such as: Umbria Jazz Festival (www.umbriajazz.com, usually in July and Umbria Winter in December - one of the oldest and best known jazz festivals in the world), Eurochocolate (www.eurochocolate.com, in October - the festival for all chocolate lovers), Pistoia Blues Festival (www.pistoiablues.com, in mid July), Trasimenoblues (www.trasimenoblues.net, Summer and Christmas edition), and other local festivals such as: La Corsa dei Ceri - Gubbio (www.ceri.it, each May 15, one of the oldest folkloristic festivals in Italy, since year 1100), La Quintana di Foligno (www.foligno.net/quintana, horse racing in the old medieval square of the city), L’infiorata di Spello (floral decorations and compositions representing liturgical figurations and ornamental motifs made from flower petals and grasses on the floors of the city streets – usually in June) and many others.
