The Umbria region
Umbria is a region of central Italy, situated in the heart of the Italian peninsula. With an area of 8,456 km² (6,334 km² the province of Perugia, 2,122 km² the province of Terni) it is one of the smallest Italian regions. It is also the only region of the peninsula that does not have any coastal areas.
It borders to the east and north-east with Marche, to the west and north-west with Tuscany and to the south and south-west with Lazio. The regional capital is Perugia.
The historic center of Perugia lies on an acropolis hill rising to the average height of about 450 m above sea level. At the highest point, the Sun Gate, the height is 493 m above sea level, a feature that makes it the most populous Italian city among those asked (altitude of the town hall) at an altitude above 250 meters above sea level.
The old town is built around this point and on the ridge of hills that branch off from it, forming five medieval villages to prolongation of the respective ports of the Etruscan city. So the original circle of Etruscan walls (long km 3), was added in the thirteenth and fourteenth century the new medieval walling not only final, still almost entirely intact and that it reaches the development of km 9 (sup. 120 hectares). The five historic districts are Porta Sole, Porta Sant'Angelo, Porta S. Susanna, Eburnea Porta and Porta S. Peter, whose ages corresponded to the respective segments of the large rural area subject to the city since the municipal government. The rest of the city all around down to 280 m asl Valley of Pian di Massiano.
The municipality, however, comes to 170 m above sea level, touched near the Tiber river, which marks the southern border with the territory of Torgiano. Perugia is located in the hinterland of central Italy, at the widest point of the Peninsula. It is the largest city between Florence and Rome, located in the middle position: about 150 km from Florence, Rome and Ancona, about 400 km from Milan, Genoa and Naples. It has a municipal area of ??449.92 km ², among the largest in Italy (population density per sq mi: 373.8), which extends over a wide countryside, with castles and villages. Besides being articulated in systems hills, mountains and plains of bands, has 54 cemeteries, 85 between neighborhoods and villages and over 3,000 km of roads. The urban contemporary, and the old city and the suburbs first, and today, it encompasses the neighboring towns that developed after World War II, it conforms to a frayed and discontinuous urban fabric, interspersed with cultivated fields and waste the country along about 20 km Pitignano from Villa San Martino in Campo, Ferreira from Torgiano Taverne Corciano, adding that in fact the neighboring municipalities of Corciano (home 21,000) and Torgiano (ab.6.000).
The Acropolis Perugia seems built on a single hill, but in reality are two: the hill of the sun and the hill Landone. The maximum depression between two hills extending from the ditch of Santa Margherita, on the east, to the grave site of Cupa, to the west. In Etruscan we chose this area as rich in water, but soon it was realized that the ground was also quite the landslide, which over the centuries has resulted in consistently powerful foundations and fortifications, are still being felt in several places.
To the north, the hills of Monte Acuto Tezio and separate it from the mountain town of Umberleigh, while a strip of territory touches the extreme west, the hills surrounding Lake Trasimeno. To the east, finally, the foothills hills of the Umbria-Marche to keep in touch with the territories of the town of Assisi and Gubbio.
