The Umbria region

The old Castello of Poggio Aquilone (300 metres above sea-level) is built on a hill ('poggio' means 'small hill') which rises abruptly from the Fersinone river, a tributary of the Nestore. The medieval village is perched on the top of this hill. Inside the village there is a single circular street, following the line of the outer castle wall, and a central block in the middle, which was the site of the old keep but which is now largely occupied by the italianate garden belonging to the early 19th century villa. The village has very marked medieval features: the ancient gateway with its pointed arch, the remains of four towers and the well-preserved outer walls. There are numerous attractions to visit all within 40 minutes drive of the property - or why not enjoy the countryside around with the various walks and nature trails into the hills and beyond!
The Perugia / San Venanzo area
The village is located close to many of teh mjor attractions that Umbria has to offer. Within 40 minutes of driving you can reach Todi, Orvieto, Assisi, Lake Trasimeno, Perugia, Spoleto, Montefalco, Gubbio and the Marmore waterfalls. Rome and Florence are very accessible by taking the train from the town of Marsciano only 10 minutes drive to Terni, then changing for a direct connection to the centre of each of the cities. You could be there well in time for morning coffee! During the Summer you could eat out every evening at one of the local village festa's or Sagra's. Poggio Aquilone hosts it's own festival during one week in June, where the women of the village gather to make the local 'Umbricelli' and the men serve wine and beer - a great evening to enjoy a typical Umbrian treat with music.
