The Umbria region

Although this is one of the smallest regions in Italy, it offers many different environmental settings, so as to create an outstanding landscape jigsaw puzzle.
This privileged central position has also moulded its people's "character", which is welcoming and open as is well known by the many foreign travellers who in the course of recent centuries have dreamt of settling here, and by the many who now live here, appreciating the wholly special quality of life in Umbria's towns and countryside.
Umbria is also the heart of Italy because it is quick to get there, thanks to the efficient road network: the region is in fact served by the Autostrada del Sole, a major motorway linking Milan and Rome, and its entire width is crossed by the E45, in other words by the Cesena-Orte Superstrada, which is classified as one of the international routes from the North to the South of Italy. Moreover, within the regional territory, everything is so close that a short journey is all it takes to go from luminous Lake Trasimeno to the rugged, woody settings of the In Umbria, art and nature, landscape and architecture and town and country appear to be in perfect harmony. Beauty is spread across the region but prevails in the masterpieces in the towns. The cathedrals of Orvieto and Spoleto, the public buildings in Perugia, Todi and Gubbio and the Franciscan Basilica in Assisi are the summits of a vocation for beauty that belongs to the whole region. The Umbria of silence, of memory and of spirituality does not conflict, but instead fits in perfectly, with the Umbria of great musical and social events of international importance: Umbria Jazz, Spoleto Festival, the ‘Festival delle Nazioni’ and the ‘Sagra Musicale Umbra’. The vitality of Umbrian culture, which has produced outstanding masterpieces, each one of which, alone, would be worth the trip, takes shape nowadays in the form of a widespread museum system that is at the cutting edge in Italy and is present in the region’s cities and small towns with numerous, heterogeneous structures: from the great collections in Perugia, to the highly-prized art museums in Foligno, Montefalco and Cascia, which are housed in prestigious venues, to the thematic museums in Torgiano (devoted to wine) and Deruta (ceramics), to ethnographic and work-related museums (the fishing museum in San Feliciano is unique of its kind), and finally to the atmospheric former tobacco drying rooms in Città di Castello, ingeniously converted by Alberto Burri into exhibition venues for his works of art.
CLIMATE: the climatic features of Umbria are those typical of an internal peninsular region. The features of the Meditterranean climate are attenuated because this region is not located beside the sea. The Appenine backbone however forms a barrier against the influxes of the Adriatic Sea.
The topography, with continuous variations in altitude and orientation, establishes a large variety of microclimates both in the area surrounding Lake Trasimeno, with particularly mild conditions and temperatures during the year, to the Appenine Mountains characterised by cool summers and winters with frequent snowstorms.
In most parts of the region, however, very low temperatures are rarely reached, as you can see from the vegetation, which is typical of Mediterranean regions with the presence of species such as the olive that could not support repeated and prolonged very cold temperatures.

Perugia area

Ideal home away from home, for those who love culture and want to be in the centre of Perugia's ancient beauty and modern lively atmosphere.
No need to mention that during Umbria Jazz in July, this Perugia rental is the best place to be in the old town. Also an ideal home for those who take an italian course at the Universita per gli Stranieri, or they love the art cities like Assisi, Gubbio, Orvieto, Todi, Spello, Norcia, Bevagna and the spectacular Cascate delle Marmore.

The Regional capital and largest city of Umbria, Perugia is situated on a panoramic rise. The historic centre is connected to the car parks by a series of escalators. It is a surprising city thanks to its variety and quality of ancient and medieval testimonies.
• Rocca Paolina: a fortress built up at the command of Pope Paul III, it covers an attractive underground itinerary through a distinctive medieval district, where the noble mansions of Perugia’s lords once were.
• Fontana Maggiore: a true symbol of the city, the Fountain was created at the end of the 13th century to provide a water output to the medieval aqueduct. The Pisanos’ carvings of a calendar and other subjects are exquisite examples of medieval sculpture.
• Priori Palace: the main civic building of the city is a nice and imposing Palace, with its pink gothic style windows and ornate portal.
• Etruscan Arch: monumental city gate of the Etruscan time, extremely well preserved.
• National Gallery of Umbria: very large and rich collection of paintings, frescoes and art works from the 13th century to the 17th century, including masterpieces by Perugino, Pinturicchio, Piero della Francesca, Luca Signorelli and Fra’ Angelico.
• Collegio del Cambio: The Guild of the money changers is one of the best preserved halls of the Renaissance in Italy, famous for its frescoes by Perugino.
• Oratory of St. Bernardino: rare example of Renaissance art, it has a beautiful façade decorated with bas-reliefs by Agostino di Duccio and rich in polychrome marbles. The interior shows a splendid early Christian 4th-century sarcophagus.
• Church of St.Angelo: a 5th-century A.D. Early-Christian circular building deriving from Roman models, it delivers a special glamour.
• Archaeological Museum: displayed within the former monastery of the church of St. Domenico, it has a remarkable collection of sarcophagus, urns and funerary outfits. Very interesting is the reconstruction of Etruscan tomb of the Cutu family.
• Church of St. Peter: this was the most important Benedictine Abbey in Umbria. The interior looks like a picture gallery. Close to the monastery a medieval botanical garden.
