The Central Scotland/Edinburgh region
Perthshire is a gem among Scotland's counties and perfectly situated in Scotland for a self-catering holiday. Visiting historic castles, museums, gardens, superb golf, walking and beaches; with such diversity of scenery, activities and things to do and see, visitors cannot fail to find entertainment and interest to suit.
Visit this central area of Scotland at any time of year. Edinburgh is a great city to visit with events throughout the year. Visit Edinburgh Castle all year round. Stroll down the Royal Mile, visit the Art Galleries on the Mound, walk on the hills at Arthur's Seat and enjoy views to the Firth of Forth, the Forth Rail Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge. Visit Scotland's new Parliament building and Holyrood House. Come in August when the Edinburgh Festival is on and the Military Tattoo. Gp to a Highland Games in Perth, Braemar, Stirling, Crieff.
From Balhousie Bank you can visit Edinburgh and Glasgow by train, bus or car. Book a Stage Coach bus on www.megabus.com.
Stirling Castle, Scone Palace, Glamis Castle, Falkland Palace, Kellie Castle and Blair Castle are all easy to visit from Balhousie Bank. St Andrews is about an hour by car, and Dundee, City of The Discovery is 30 minutes by car, bus or rail. Pitlochry is a great visit, see the fish ladder at the Dam, and visit the 'theatre in the hills'. See also Aberfeldy and The Crannog at Loch Tay, a reconstructed Iron Age dwelling.
Perthshire / Perth, Perth and Kinross area
Visit the magnificent highland Perthshire Blair Castle, home to the Dukes of Atholl, not to mention the nearby centre of excellence for Scottish produce at House of Bruar. Walk at Bruar Falls, visit the nearby highland town of Pitlochry with its famous fish ladder and Festival Theatre and shops selling quality Scottish tartans and crafts. Wonder at the underwater archaeology (still on-going) that’s produced the replica stone-age settlement and visitor centre, The Crannog with nearby Kenmore and Aberfeldy.
Travel by the Sma’ Glen to Crieff, a typical highland town with the nearby distillery the Famous Grouse Experience. The glorious gardens in this area are known worldwide by planstmen - at their best in May or June, but well worth a visit at any time of year, such as Branklyn, Kellie and Drummond Castles.
Scone Palace is close to Perth and the fairy-tale Glamis Castle, birthplace of the Queen Mother, is in Angus. Falkland Palace, Kellie Castle and others await your visit. If family history is your passion, there’s ample opportunity to research your roots via the Tay Valley Family History Society and other centres.
