Home description

Moulinalmond Cottage is set in the grounds of a quiet and secluded Victorian Garden yet only a few minutes' drive from Perth city centre. Visitors have the exclusive use of an enclosed Garden to relax in, with lawns, rose arches and fruit trees - the perfect place for a picnic, a quiet read, or just a snooze in the sun. From the grounds there are views across the River Almond and the sound of the river can be heard quite clearly. Walk in the ancient and historic Methven Wood where William Wallace and Robert the Bruce both fought battles in the Scottish Wars of Independence. Ideally situated as a base from which to explore Scotland with Edinburgh a 45 minute drive, Glasgow an hour, Dundee 30 minutes and Perth 10 minutes. Local eating out in Almondbank, a 5-minute walk, or in nearby Pitcairngreen, a 10-minute walk.

The cottage is well equipped, with a large pine-featured dining kitchen, and the sitting room has a welcoming wood-burning stove. The garden door leads to a lovely sun-trap courtyard. Freshly decorated and comfortably furnished, this is a charming base from which to explore the rich tapestry of Perthshire and the Highlands-some of the most beautiful countryside in Europe. Because of the bedroom / bathroom layout, this cottage is most suited for a party of 2 or a family group.

Access to the woods is direct from the grounds as well as access to Methven Wood - an ancient oak woodland which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The gardens are typical of a Victorian country house with fine specimen trees, a walled kitchen garden, various flower and shrub beds, and sweeping, extensive lawns. There are two paddocks either side of the property with grazing horses, sheep and cattle, while the north end of the grounds provide a wonderful vista up the River Almond with cliffs and woodland on either side.

The Central Scotland/Edinburgh region

Perthshire is a gem among Scotland's counties and perfectly situated in Scotland for a self-catering holiday. Visiting historic castles, museums, gardens, superb golf, walking and beaches; with such diversity of scenery, activities and things to do and see, visitors cannot fail to find entertainment and interest to suit.

Perthshire / Almondbank, Perth area

Visit the magnificent highland Perthshire Blair Castle, home to the Dukes of Atholl, not to mention the nearby centre of excellence for Scottish produce at House of Bruar. Walk at Bruar Falls, visit the nearby highland town of Pitlochry with its famous fish ladder and Festival Theatre and shops selling quality Scottish tartans and crafts. Wonder at the underwater archaeology (still on-going) that’s produced the replica stone-age settlement and visitor centre, The Crannog with nearby Kenmore and Aberfeldy. Travel by the Sma’ Glen to Crieff, a typical highland town with the nearby distillery the Famous Grouse Experience. The glorious gardens in this area are known worldwide by planstmen - at their best in May or June, but well worth a visit at any time of year, such as Branklyn, Kellie and Drummond Castles.

Scone Palace is close to Perth and the fairy-tale Glamis Castle, birthplace of the Queen Mother, is in Angus. Falkland Palace, Kellie Castle and others await your visit. If family history is your passion, there’s ample opportunity to research your roots via the Tay Valley Family History Society and other centres.
