The Tayside/Perthshire region

Perth has a pedestrianised town centre and an excellent variety of shops, restaurants, a cinema and concert hall.

There are two 'Inches' or public parks, the North Inch and the South Inch, providing large grassy play and sports areas. There are golf courses, Bells sports centre, an ice rink, an excellent swimming pool with flumes, outdoor lagoon, Jacuzzis and steam and sauna rooms. Trout & salmon fishing can be arranged on the River Tay and its tributaries.

Worth a visit are Perth City museum and art gallery, and Scone Palace, which was the crowning place of Scottish kings where Macbeth, Robert the Bruce and Charles II were crowned.

Two of the world's great golf courses are within a short drive - Gleneagles and St Andrews, the former being the venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup. Pitcairngreen is close to the park and ride facility for the Ryder Cup. There are also numerous public and private courses in and around Perth, such as Rosemount, Carnoustie, Murrayshall,, Craigie Hill and Crieff, to name just a few.

Perthshire has some of Europe's most remarkable tree and woodlands. There are many beautiful forests and woodlands where some of the tallest trees in Britain can be found. There is the gnarled oak at Birnam which is said to be the last survivor of the wood portrayed in Shakespeare's Macbeth.

For walkers there are many Munros in the area to tackle like Shiehallion and Ben Vrackie with breathtaking views.

Perth, Scotland

Pitcairngreen is a very small village around 4 miles west of Perth. The village surrounds a green and the local pub, the Pitcairngreen Inn, has a selection of real ales and ciders generally on offer. Meals are served from Wednesday to Sunday.

There are plenty of walks from Pitcairngreen which can be accessed directly from the bottom of the garden. Walking across a field the River Almond is easily reached and there is a pleasant walk through woods to a weir where salmon can sometimes be seen jumping.

There is a well stocked local shop within walking distance. The village is on the bus route into Perth taking 15 minutes.

Just 7 miles away is the best ice-cream in the area at Stewart Tower Dairy Farm.

Gloagburn farm shop is just a 10 minute drive and has an array of finest quality local products.

Pitlochry is just a half hour drive away with its Festival Theatre and famous fish ladder.
