Home description
The Old Winery, Cour Rossignol, is the largest of seven homes recently lovingly crafted from the outbuildings of a small chateau, formerly part of the Beaujolais wine appelation. Today, the building offers comfortable accommodation including four spacious bedrooms and four bath/shower rooms, set around a shared courtyard with pool within attractive communal grounds in a rural (but not isolated) setting. The house is in an area known for its attractive rolling landscapes and some of the best food to be found anywhere in France.

The Rhone / French Alps / Loire region
Department 42 - La Loire - is one of the most beautiful, and most gastronomic, area of France. And yet, strangely, it's as yet largely undiscovered by the British, making it possible to discover its many attractions without fighting hordes of tourists, even in the peak season.
The department is characterised by lush, rolling farmland, much like Southern Burgundy to the immediate North, but with the addition of more mountainous areas to the West, East and South West). There's also the Loire, one of France's great rivers, and the Saone and Rhone which meet in Lyon, to the South East.
The house is located approximately five minutes' drive from the medieval hill village of Perreux, which includes an attractive patisserie/boulangerie, a bar and a restaurant. A further five to ten minutes takes you to the town of Roanne, situated on the banks of the river Loire at the point at which it joins the canal to Digoin, making it an important centre for the French inland waterway system.
Roanne's greatest claim to fame is the world famous Maison Troisgros, which has been named as one of the top 25 restaurants of the world; eating there has been cited as one of 50 things everyone should do before they die. Its presence has had a knock-on effect on more modest eatieries in the area, many of which are owned by former Troisgros chefs. There are many reasonably priced restaurants in and around Roanne.
Despite being far enough South to enjoy four distinct seasons including a long, hot summer, the house is within a comfortable day's drive of Calais; by air, it's easily reached from London, Manchester and elsewhere via Lyon's excellent modern airport.
Perreux area
The Old Winery is the perfect base for exploring the area, being located within approximately 5km of the N7. In addition to the many great restaurants in and near Roanne and Le Coteau, there are numerous vineyards in the area, both in the Cote Roannais to the West of Roanne (a superb light red wine, seldom found outside France) and in the Beaujolais to the North East.
Visitors can explore the canal from Roanne to Digoin, the Lac de Villerest (France's largest man-made lake), which has its own beach and visit the romantic Chateau de la Roche, which appears to be marooned on an island in the Loire. The Madeleine Mountains to the West are very attractive, while the Pilat National Park to the South West is one of Europe's leading mountain biking centres and an excellent place for hillwalkers. In winter, there are easy, family skiing slopes within 20 minutes' drive of the house, while the Massif Central and Alps are only 1-1.5 hours away.
Lovers of city life can choose from St Etienne (35 minutes South; home to the country's best museum of contemporary art outside Paris), world heritage site and France's second city Lyon (an hour to the South East) and, an hour to the North West, the art nouveau charms of Vichy. St. Etienne boasts France's largest museum of 20th century art outside of Paris, housed in a striking modern building just outside the town. Lyon is a remarkable city, with architecture, riverside walks, cafe culture and history to rival Paris, but on a more compact scale.
In addition to Lyon's great pre-Christmas shopping, the area is an attractive choice for winter breaks, being within an hour's drive of several of the Massif Central's ski resorts, including Chalmazel.
How to get there
The house is located a little over an hour from Lyon St Exupery airport and within a day's drive from Calais (typically 6.5-7hrs). As befits France's second city, Lyon is well served with plentiful direct flights from the UK, including BMI from Heathrow or Manchester, British Airways from Heathrow and easyJet from Gatwick and Luton.

Further details indoors: The ground floor consists of an open-plan living and dining area with fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. An attractive oak staircase leads to the first floor, which offers a large double bedroom to the rear and another with additional single bed at the front; both have en suite shower rooms. A spiral staircase (unsuited to the infirm or unsupervised infants) leads to a top floor with two twin bedrooms, a shower room and a spacious landing/sitting area.
There are plentiful, newly installed (2007), electric wall heaters throughout the property and an attractive cast iron woodburner in the living room, making the house well-suited to cosy stays in autumn/winter/early Spring, in addition to the traditional season from Easter to October. Other modern conveniences include a LCD TV, DVD recorder and Sky Freesat decoder (all new in 2007), washer/dryer and outdoor furniture.
Further details outdoors: Outside, there's a shared courtyard with pool (seasonal) and extensive grounds including a stream. The immediate surroundings include attractive rolling farmland, much of which is used to graze the indigenous white Charolles cattle, with pleasant country walks.

Guestbook
'We enjoyed our stay hugely. This corner of France has it all - and yet is relatively undiscovered by tourists, and Brits in general. The house itself is spacious, tastefully decorated, situated in a very verdant spot and yet not isolated. We'll come again!' - Mrs A. Maxwell, Richmond, Surrey.
