The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

The Dordogne region is one of the most popular holiday destinations in France with many attractions on offer. Although the Dordogne has no coastline for 'bucket and spade' holidays, there are wonderful rivers for canoeing and swimming, as well as sandy river beaches.
The scenery is dramatic and interspersed with pretty towns and villages, both in the hinterland and along the Dordogne/Vezère rivers, plus innumerable châteaux, caves, museums, picnic spots and viewpoints. The four main areas are: Périgord Pourpre, in the southwest, named after its vineyards; the Périgord Vert to the north; the Périgord Noir, centred on Sarlat, named after its dense forest; and finally the Périgord Blanc that covers the limestone countryside around Périgueux.
For those who enjoy sampling different foods this is an area renowned for truffles, walnuts, duck, goose and foie gras - the markets are overflowing with local produce and at every corner you will see signs offering opportunities to sample and buy local products.
For wine buffs, the areas around Bergerac and Bordeaux are the places to head for with vineyards stretching in all directions as far as the eye can see.
Bergerac, the capital of the Périgord Poupre, lies on the riverbank in the wide plain of the Dordogne. The vieille ville (old town) is a calm and pleasant area to wander through, with drinking fountains on the street corners and numerous late medieval houses.
Sarlat-la-Canéda, the capital of the Périgord Noir, lies in a hollow between the hills 10km back from the Dordogne river. The best way to explore this medieval town is to wander through the cool, shady lanes and courtyards – cour des Fontaines and cour des Chanoines – around the back of the cathedral. Wonderful old houses can be found in the streets to the North before Sarlat's labyrinthine lanes lead you back to the central place de la Liberté, where the large Saturday market spreads its stands of geese, flowers, foie gras, truffles, walnuts and mushrooms.
There are more prehistoric painted caves around Les Eyzies than you could possibly hope to visit in one day! 26km up the Vézère valley you will also find the town of Montignac that acts as the main base for visiting the Lascaux caves.
Canoeing is hugely popular in the Dordogne, especially during the summer months when the Vézère and Dordogne rivers are shallow and slow-flowing – ideal for beginners. There are rental outlets at just about every twist in both rivers – a half-day (or longer) is recommended to give you enough time to simply cruise downstream and soak up the atmosphere!
The Perigueux / Saint-Astier area
Château le Bou is set by the village of Léguillac de l'Auche and only 6 kms from the busy market town of Saint-Astier and its historic church.. It is centrally situated in the heart of the PERIGORD enabling visitors to enjoy all aspects of the Dordogne.-
At 17 kms Périgueux is the capital of the Périgord and the cultural heart of Dordogne. Founded over 2,000 years ago , it is a gracious blend of ancient and modern. Périgueux is also home to the largest cathedral in the South West of France, its Byzantine architecture overlooks the Medieval and renaissance parts of the town.. The pedestrian area with magnificent Renaissance houses and its shady squares and café terraces, is a marvellous venue for open air events like the international mime festival, Mimos, or the free evening jazz concerts in July and august.
At 25 kms the town of Brantôme , which maybe one of the prettiest village in the Dordogne, its abbey heads a host of medieval and renaissance buildings, including the oldest belfry in France. The charming town of Brantôme is an island encircled by a loop of the river Dronne, linked to the outside world by five bridges, hence its nick name "Venice of the Périgord"
Château le Bou is also perfectly situated for visiting the wine regions: Bergerac ( 60 kms), Saint -Emilion (80 kms) and Bordeaux ( 120 kms by the motorway).
And finally, if the desire takes you, the Atlantic Coast is close enough to take a day out by the sea (only 1.5 hours drive along the motorway).
Périgord is a quiet little corner of country side where people enjoy a measured, secure existence The beautiful landscape is filled with curve upon curve, in a series of undulating valleys and hills. Périgord is famous for its beautiful castles and its many prehistoric sites and of cours for its gastronomy.
Alternatively, one may choose to discover the refreshingly different pace of life sitting back and admiring the views, meandering down the rivers in canoes , wandering through the quaint old towns and villages or discovering the vast forests on horseback or mountain bikes.
