The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Aquitaine was fought over throughout the hundred years' war - Excideuil, our nearby market town did not surrender to the English king. The fortress dominates the town, but today's inhabitants enjoy a peaceful life with all shops, services, doctors and dentist, restaurants and bars, boutiques and supermarket. Vestiges of mediaeval warfare can be studied at some nearby chateaux, and water sports are popular at lakes and on the rivers especially canoeing and water skiing. The restaurants are famous for Perigord food, with duck products being the regional speciality. Perigord produces ducks and geese, truffles, cepe mushrooms, walnuts and now even caviar from the Dordogne river. Sunshine is the norm here, it's a gardener's and tourist's paradise in the prettiest countryside in France.
Perigueux area
La Ferme de Tabary is ideally placed for exploring. Nearby Excideuil with its X1th century fortress is a charming small market town with a host of mediaeval buildings. The town was the home of troubadour Giraut de Borneil (1160—1219) and also saw Henri 11 (of Navarre), and Talleyrand. Fine examples of Romanesque architecture are found in many nearby towns and in Perigueux, where the cathedral was designed by the same architect who built the famous Sacre Coeur in Paris. Perigueux is well known now for its summer music evenings and festival of mime. The outstanding network of cross-country tracks offers wonderful walking, riding and cycling in unspoilt countryside. Some of these form parts of the pilgrim roads to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
How to get there

Once here a car is essential. The drive from Caen or St Malo is about 6 hours, a bit more from Calais or Boulogne. We send directions to all guests.

What a wonderful place! And the swimming pool is positively majestic! We have already booked a fortnight next year! Mr & Mrs Pearson, Somerset. (visited 2001 to 2007).
Tabary has a very interesting bird population including black redstarts, golden aurioles, woodpeckers and many buzzards. We saw red squirrels in the gardens too! The walks are outstandingly beautiful. Mrs Getts and family, Arizona,USA.
Richard and Luisa helped us so much during our stay when Maisie was ill and the house was perfect. Mrs R Hicks and family, Bournemouth.
