The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

The Dordogne is the third largest department in France. The department is split into 4 areas, Perigord Noir (black), Blanc (White), Vert (green) and Pourpre (purple). Perigord Blanc is central, it is so called because of the white limestone that is the nature of the land. Perigueux is its capital and was founded by the Romans many years ago. Perigord Vert stretches to the north and takes its name from the luscious green valleys, the area is hilly with many streams and rivers ands is always green even in the driest of summers. Perigord Noir is famous for its prehistoric history and is centred round Sarlat with its wonderful 17th century buildings with steeply pitched roofs and narrow streets. This area has high hills and dense woodlands. The Vezere river flows through villages such as Sergeac and Les Eyzies until it merges with the Dordogne river beyond Le Bugue. The Dordogne then continues through Beynac, Domme and La Roque Gageac where over its banks tower cliffs where you will find houses built into the rock face. Perigord Poupre denotes the grapes which are grown in the many vineyards which line the banks of the Dordogne throughout this area. Here you will also find Bastide towns, such as Eymet, Monpazier and Domme, whose history are associated with the 100 year and religious wars.
The Dordogne has more chateaux and castles than anywhere in France.. Many were built during the 100 years war, some by the French some by the English. You will also find prehistoric cave paintings at places like Lascaux and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac.

The Dordogne in the south west of France is like everywhere else, the weather trends are changing. However the climate is temperate and is generally governed by the Atlantic, it brings in some rain which makes this area greener than the south but the sun is warmer than the north so spring starts earlier and it stays warmer well into autumn. Summers can be hot with temperatures at times reaching over 30°c.

Perigueux / Chalagnac area

As well as enjoying the house, pool, lake and garden there are many activities available for all ages in the local area. There are folders at the house with numerous brochures inside for things to do, or you can visit the local tourist information office in Vergt.

Sports enthusiasts and those of an energetic nature are well catered for with swimming, walking, tennis, rugby, there is a great team in Perigueux and the local team at Vergt is well worth seeking out if you want to watch a good game, golf, canoeing, fishing (you will need a license which can be purchased in Vergt at the tabac), hot air ballooning, climbing, go-karting, paint balling, cycling, horse riding and various water sports. These are all within easy access of the house.

There is an abundance of wildlife. Keep an eye out for buzzards, kingfishers, hoopoes, herons, woodpeckers and jays amongst others. At certain times of the year, storks migrate north and the house is below their flight path. It is an amazing sight to behold, hundreds of them darken the sky and your can hear the flapping of their wings for miles. You may also be lucky enough to see deer, red squirrels, wild boar and pine martens whilst on your travels.

For those of you that savour the finer things in life, a trip to a local vineyard is a must. Take a tour round a chateau and discover how they grow and harvest the grapes, learn about the process of fermenting and storing and then best of all you get to sample some of the excellent wines. An afternoon can’t get much better than that. Some local wines to look out for are, Pecharmant, Saussignac and Montbazillac. One of the most beautiful towns where there are many wine producers is St Emilion, with its honey coloured buildings and wonderful terracotta roofs.
Gastronomes will delight in dishes such as Magret de Canard (duck), foie gras, truffles, mushrooms (cepes), walnuts, fish and strawberries, which are specialities of the region. In nearly all restaurants you will see duck in various forms on the menu.

Exploring the region on foot, by car or river is an adventure in itself. Some of the places not to be missed are Sarlat, St Emilion, Limoges, Hauteforte, Gourdon, Rocamadour, Bordeaux and Angouleme as well as those already mentioned. The house is only 1½ to 2 hours from the coast, which is a great day out for all the family.

Shopping in the vibrant street markets is a real eye opener, there is a market every day of the week to whet the appetites of the shopaholics amongst you. Wonderful fresh local produce, intriguing artifacts and antiques from by-gone days and the weirdest fashions you ever did see but hey this is France. Check out the cheeses, fresh vegetables, meat and fish.
The local pizza restaurant in Vergt is a favourite for many of our guests, as is L’Accroche Coeur in Perigueux (details of both are at the house) two very different places to eat but great food. There are however many places to try and enjoy. The Café de Place is a great meeting place for young French students, you can partake in a drink or get a good meal. For English and French alike The Star Inn is a must visit, run by Bev and Mike it is an Irish Pub with a great atmosphere. The Friday night quiz is good light entertainment. It is frequented by French as well as English clientele and is really friendly.

Further details indoors:
From the hallway doors lead to the kitchen, lounge/dining room and a cloakroom/toilet. Another door leads to a corridor off which are a twin and double bedroom plus a shower room. Stairs lead up to further bedrooms and the main bathroom on the 2nd floor and down to the apartment, TV room, laundry/utility room and garage on the ground floor.
The modern fitted kitchen is fully equipped with an electric oven, gas hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker and toaster etc. The large L shaped lounge/dining room has wonderful old oak beams, stone walls, chestnut parquet flooring and a wood burner. There are plenty of soft comfy sofas and chairs and a large dining table, plus a collection of books, cards games etc. French doors lead onto the front terrace and there are 4 windows on 2 other aspects, making this a very light and airy room with stunning views toward Bergerac, the orchard, swimming pool and lake.

French doors lead onto the covered south facing front terrace. Despite being modern, the kitchen has a rustic charm with beamed ceiling and terracotta floor tiles. It is perfectly positioned for entertaining indoors or enjoying al fresco meals on the terraces, croissants and coffee in the morning, bread and cheese at lunch time or a cool glass of wine in the evening whilst watching the sun go down.

On the opposite side of the hall the cloakroom has a toilet and wash hand basin. Another door leads into a corridor where you will find a front aspect double bedroom with ceiling fan and French doors leading to the front terrace and a rear aspect twin bedroom with views over the pool and lake. Both rooms have chestnut parquet flooring. There is a shower room with large walk in shower, toilet, wash hand basin and bidet. The floors and walls are tiled and there is a high ceiling with beams which enhance the style of this modern room.

Off the large landing is the master bedroom which has a king size bed and en-suite with corner bath, wash hand basin and separate toilet and bidet. There are 2 ceiling fans for your comfort during warm summer nights and the beams and feature stone walling in this room are wonderful. It has a double aspect, looking over the terrace at the front of the house and the swimming pool and lake at the back. Views from the windows are amazing. 2 other bedrooms occupy this floor, one double rear aspect room overlooking the pool and lake and a twin front aspect room looking south toward Bergerac. Both rooms have fantastic beams.

On the ground floor is the apartment. Entry is from the rear patio or an internal door in the lower hallway. It has a kitchen/diner, TV lounge with DVD and video player, a twin and double bedroom and a bathroom with ¾ bath, wash hand basin and toilet. The kitchen is fully equipped for 4 people with gas cooker, fridge, kettle, coffee machine and toaster. It overlooks the rear patio and swimming pool. This makes the kitchen ideal when dining alfresco on the rear patio.
